Hi from France Great reaction! She was 14 in this performance, she's now 18. Your astonishment is not exceptional! Diana is an unique contralto (dramatic contralto) her range is C3-C6. Diana uses many vocal techniques rarely used in pop music (like overtones, yodel, and some from lyric chant....). The one that seems to amaze people the most is multitonal voice. The root notes are enriched with powerful harmonics which can give the impression that there are several overlapping voices or an artificial effect which gives this result. This technique is used in Slavic folk music, like Bulgarian vocal groups or artists like Pelageya (kzbin.infovideos), the Russian folk diva. I cannot tell you exactly how these artists achieve this result, I was just told that it is linked to the simultaneous use of the different resonators of the human body and that such a mastery of the voice and of the breath with such a fluidity requires years of work, Diana has been singing on stage and has been taking singing and performing arts lessons since the age of 6! This broadcast is "You're Great!" ("You are Super"), a song contest reserved for children who have had a difficult start in life. This is the case of Diana who was mistreated and ended up in an orphanage at 3 years old. In her shows, Diana participates in the direction, direction and arrangements of her performances. It's hard for people who want to describe Diana's voice to not have them reminded of other well known pop contraltos and most are not trying to compare her to the other singer in a tit for tat comparison but think about it - Go talk to a family member who has never heard her, and find the words to paint a picture of her. Most people if you were ask them about a contralto would have no clue what that vocal range is let alone having ever heard the word, "contralto" and would have to go look it up. So when people use other contralto voices that people will recognize, that is the context they are using it in. And your observations are spot on - though 'level', I don't know. It's definitely developed differently in style, range and color with her outstanding control and the blending of different styles. Cool as hell - Hot!!

@@bertjones3010 Hi Bert! I grew up in the 1960s and I listened to Cher all the time. Her version of Walking in Memphis is spectacular. But Diana is simply more talented (or gifted, if you prefer that word). Nobody on the planet (male or female) can do what Diana does. Nobody. I've listened to hundreds of world-class musical artists over the decades. I haven't been this amazed by a musical artist since I first listened to Jimi Hendrix back in 1967.

@@vahauser51 It has been an interesting couple of years where music has again dominated my life. I guess PostModern Jukebox got me back into it. I started in the 60s also, though my first album was Take Five. I have no idea how I even found it - probably some late night station I guess. I plunged off the deep end when I joined the service and it continued through the 70s. Got to see quite a few of the big names somehow. I mean, it was like I was a Dead Head following groups around, it just kind of happened. Then went back to Jazz in the 80s though not exclusively. Just sort of lost that loving feeling and I remember few things I saw up until PMJ peaked my interest. Haley Reinhart, Morgan James, Floor Jansen, Maya Fadeeva and of course Diana. I worry about her though. She continues a hard road to expand out of Russia except for her video's and the reactors that love her. Even getting her songs off of streaming services is a huge challenge since the 'team' seems unwilling to post them other than in Cyrillic including her name. Well, at any rate I wish her luck - will you and I even be around to see what happens?

This song is about an orphan's wedding. This is a conversation between the bride and the river, which takes care of her on behalf of her mother, or, perhaps, with the spirit of her gone mother - on the banks of the river (the ancient Slavs, as well as the ancient Greeks or Egyptians, believed that the river symbolized the border of two worlds, the world of the living and the world of the dead, or a road from one world to another).The girl says that the groom is rich and the celebration is great, but you shouldn't believe the abundance of guests, fun and smiles. Something remains unspoken, this marriage seems to be at odds with the bride's heart. The ending of the entire scene stays uncertain, but the fact that the heroine is sailing in a boat down the river indicates that she decides to go to her mother. The song itself is very uneasy to perform. Earlier renditions (dated back to 1970-80-ies) were not so convincing. Diana's interpretation is absoltely epic, full of life, sense and emotion. The other special thing, saying nothing about the voice itself, is how delicately Diana uses yodeling (to express the crying) which is not so common for Russian folk tradition (and more associated with Switzerland and South Germany). Folklore is a very conservative genre, actually it consists of rules and patterns which have to be kept without a change... So this performance is not only a real drama with a touch of mysticism, ancient history and psychology, but also an incredible waterfall of very bold and complex music elements. Diana shows herself as very professional inter-human (inter-cultural & inter-epoch) intermediary.

I will explain to you the meaning of this old Russian song that was sung during the wedding. Since a much shortened version was made for the scene, not even all Russian people understand its meaning. An orphan girl from a foster family is married off (most likely to a man older than her). She comes to the river (reka), affectionately calling it rechenka. The river in the folklore of many peoples is the border between the world of the living and the dead. She turns to her deceased parents: she asks for advice and blessings. An orphan girl is faced with a choice - to drown herself, committing the sin of suicide, or still accept the circumstances and "go with the flow". What will she choose? This is decided by the audience together with the performer of this song.

The 1st time i heard her she was singing chris isaacs wicked game. She was 14 and i had to watch the video a dozen times before i believed what my ears were hearing. She has a unique voice and tone obviously but her control and versatility with her voice and the intensity with which she performs are beyond her years. Check out wicked game, human, derniere danse, pretty much anything she does, she is remarkable. She also has a rather tragic childhood but has developed into a fun loving young woman with a sense of humor all her own. Check out some of the little shorts she has on her channel.

At age 3, she was the first of 12 children to live from childbirth. Her mother was a severe alcoholic and was not married. She abused and neglected Diana and after a failed drowning attempt which she suffered a broken collar bone threw her out in the street like an unwanted kitten. Relatives came by and saw her outside crying and because the way her eyes looked and she could not talk they thought her to be mentally retarted and took her to an orphanage where her adopted mother worked. A year or so later when a friend was visiting they heard Diana singing to cartoons and it was then she suggested that she be given singing lessons to help her learn to speak. The rest is history with her winning 40-50 national and international competitions before auditioning for the first show The Voice Children’s addition which she sang “Yodel Time”, great performance but dissatisfied with what the judges did not do. Your at the beginning of a long and fabulous journey experiencing Diana's artistry. It's emotional, mesmerizing captivating and spiritual. Been subscribed to Diana's channels for three years, a pleasure to see Diana grow in her artistry, maturing and spreading her wings. Diana is now 18 years old and attending Gitis school for theater arts in Moscow, finishing freshman year. Her voice has expanded both higher and lower, even more control now, how amazing this young lady will be in 5-10-15 years. A wonderful journey for us all to follow. Ok....... Cher may well be meeting Shakira, but Diana plays in another league. ))) She is 14 here, by the way. It is a true Russian treasure. Now Diana's just turned 18 and she is an absolutely one of a kind true contralto with the range starting from C3 without fry, and with 3 full octaves and full and seamless access to all notes and registers. Diana sounds polyphonical. She is a master of yodel, sings a true yodel song in her repertoire. Wonderful mixed and head voice. If you plan to further explore Diana's performances, try two seasons of You Are Super NTV show of 2018 and 2019, where she won and got Grand Prix respectively. Be careful with copyright though. NTV are very strict. And then try Diana's youtube channel. You won't be dissappointed. This is a true vocal miracle. Please, react to Wicked Game of 2019 next, please. Diana is like no other. This project is unique in the world, an international TV- competition: 'You are Super', especially for adopted and orphaned children. 2018 (3rd season) Diana sang 'Derniere danse' (French), 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' (Engl.), 'The River' (Russ.), 'Tomorrow Is A Lie' (Engl.) and 2019 (super season) Diana won the Grand Prix with 'Blizzard' (Russ.), 'Wicked Game' (Engl.) and 'Human' (Engl.). The winner of the season will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to KZbin and soon she had millions of fans. The project producers help the finalists start studying and encourage their creativity. Diana won a scholarship to the College of Music. Igor Krutoy, here as a juror, gave her a small apartment in Moscow. So, she could start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy (She died of Covid-19 in Oct. 2020). The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard to bring back the lost high notes and has expanded her vocal range, currently from C3 to D6. Her genres are folk-rock, folk-pop, jazz, soul, blues, soldier songs and Diana-stile… tradition meets modernity. She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically. But she is not only a great singer and storyteller, but also a humble, intelligent and hardworking young woman. She also gives charity concerts. She loves her family and her fans. They are 'friends' to her and they are very supportive of her. Diana is grateful that they helped improve her home studio and also supported her future plans. Her Russian Friends have chosen Diana as "National Treasure" (no official title). 2020 Diana graduated from high school a year earlier with honor, as an external student and now, she is a student at the legendary Russian State Institute of Theater and Variety Arts (Juilliard similar to GITIS). She is already composing songs and we will definitely hear her own song soon. She will only take part in major competitions if invited. Such competitions require a lot of time, effort and strength. As a result, participants often have large educational gaps and problems later on. Diana is a smart young woman. She focuses on her studies, her voice and expanding her repertoire. I've listened to Diana before but never without a willingness to accept her as anyone other than just another kid seeking the limelight. Boy was I wrong. Diana has an incredible back-story which it is quite easy to find information about. She was 14 years old in this clip, and about 18 years old now. She started to sing from about eight years old, and if you follow her on her youtube channel you will see that she has been singing extensively on stages in competitions and as a guest singer from about ten years old. So she is now completely at home on a stage under the bright lights. Diana was actually rejected by her birth mother who also physically abused her badly, even whilst she was in the womb apparently with a failed abortion attempt. She was so traumatised by the time her foster parents received her that she wouldn't or couldn't speak, and was sent to a voice or singing coach to help her to communicate and socialise with others. She quickly learnt to use her unique voice and loved to perform on the stage. So much so that looking at her youtube channel with video clips of numerous stage shows from a young age that one might think she both lived for and on the stage performing, which she is obviously very good at.

The river was considered the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. She goes to the river and asks for the blessing of marriage. She says that there are many people at home, but there is no father and mother. You hear Diana singing in a whisper. These are the words of the deceased mother of the bride. Then the girl is crying. In Russia, at weddings they sang sad songs to scare away evil and the marriage of a young couple was to be happy. Hi Jacqueline, Diana had a terrible childhood (read about it in wikipedia) until she was adopted; her adoptive mother and a mentor (Igor Krutoy, friend and producer; incidentally, also for Dimash Kudaibergen) provided the right environment and career encouragement.
