I’m gonna have to give this a go on a mix I’m working on at the moment. I’m finding it hard to get the atmosphere I want out of the studio reverb that the vocal track is being sent to but when I sent it to a hall reverb it just got too hazy for my liking (despite much preferring the vibe the hall reverb gave when compared to the studio reverb)

There’s a way to add that texture back at the end of the chain without losing the power of the vocal at the same time. It just entails a couple more steps from where he stopped here.

Sidechaining has so many uses! One gripe though, it's a bit frustrating when you talk of listening to the reverb tail but keep speaking over the end of the vocal so we can't hear it!

How come videos about vocal production have no vocal production?
@bubblevest15442 жыл бұрын
I’ve done this by bussing the reverb and compression to an auxiliary track , then set up another bus track with no output, then sidechained the compressor to the 2nd aux track with no output.

Thanks a lot, this is exactly what I was missing to finish my current track lol. When I tried to implement it, first I was thinking, wait a minute, isnt this very similar to using pre delay? So I experimented with using a lot of predelay first as that seemed a little easier and I was curious to find out if there is any difference or not. I had used some pre delay before but then I realized I needed a lot more and the problem of making the vocal sound too far away was already much better. But then when I tried to duck it anyway on top of my predelay, it sounded a lot better in terms of what i need to achieve. Cause my vocal is telling a story, so it is important that people can understand the words well. but at the same time I just love the sound of the reverb lol. Now I have ALMOST as much reverb as I fancy, but with a much clearer and easier to understand vocal at the same time

Hi there, I'm very new to sidechain compression. Would it make a difference if you were to put the compressor at the start of the fx chain? As in would you always want to put the compressor at the end chain when using sidechain compression? Thanks love your stuff very to the point!
@jellomakesmehappy5 жыл бұрын
both could work but you have more control over the tail of the verb if you put the compressor after it. Putting the compressor before would allow you to control the signal going into the verb and then you would need to adjust the tail of the verb within the plugin itself. It's a little bit of a balancing act that could be avoided by putting the compressor after. However, both techniques would get the job done

Key learnings: 1. Side chain your reverb so that it doesn’t muddy up the vocals 2. He didn’t share that he loved her.
@Milesvincentmusic2 жыл бұрын
My question is : how do you sidechain the same reverb bus with compression sent to the main vocal to let’s say harmonies/octaves and background vocal tracks? Of course you can just make multiple busses with the same exact chain of reverb and compressor side chained to each octave, harmony and background vocal track, but is there a more efficient way?
@jeowhi2 жыл бұрын
have you found the solution to this?
@Milesvincentmusic2 жыл бұрын
@@jeowhi no! I’ve just been creating seperate buses with the same chain! It’s more work but it’s been doing the job.
@jeowhi2 жыл бұрын
@@Milesvincentmusic i found a solution! what you can do is route all your vox tracks to a bus and add fx onto that bus. that way itll affect all your channels! also make sure that bus is sent to stereo out!

@MacReviewzOnline4 жыл бұрын
interesting. normally this is done with a dynamic EQ side chained. I guess the same thing in a way.
@ddkade7675 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob. I'm afraid I agree with Hershey Bell, I couldn't follow you on this video at all either. Is there any chance you could clarify the routing for us please. You said, from the lead vocal, send the signal to the vocal verb channel, which you then called a AUX channel. You then went on to say via a bus? Where did the bus channel come from? Can you walk us through the routing process again please, as there are a few of us new to side chaining who are totally lost. Thanks a million.

Also i want to know that when we take different takes so during mixing vocals when we play whole vocals of different takes it sounds like sometimes low volume somtimes high sometimes thin sometimes thck so how to make it similar or in level so that it can sound like one vocal take completely??p
@ionlywantto5 жыл бұрын
Use volume automation or clip gain to keep levels consistent. If the vocals sound thin and then sometimes thick, it's probably because the position from the singer to the microphone is changing between takes so try to keep this consistent too :)

That is exactly what compressors are made to do. Compress to make things all be a similar volume, adjust to the volume you want, add some volume automation to round off the edges and it should be good.

Great sound, seems to be what I liked in a lot of Moody Blues vocal tracks, such as 'Gypsy." Did you put the delay back in? I wasn't sure if you just kept the side-chained reverb. BTW, here's that Moody's song; they doubled the vocal but I think that then they added some of your technique. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5nci5VoYpiHntk

I like the technique and can see where it would be valuable. Not a big fan of your teaching though (sorry - but saying this to help you improve) - too much clicking around and not enough walking us through exactly what your process is. There's a lot of assumptions of what the listener may or may not know - for example, while I'm familiar with side-chain compression, I haven't used it much and would have appreciated more of an understanding of what exactly you were doing there. Again, like the technique but don't feel confident I could do it just watching this video. Take a look at some of MusicTechHelpGuy or Joe Gilder's videos - they really know how to teach and lead you through a discussion where at the end you feel like you could do it. Liked the video and hope to see more of your work in the future. Thanks.
