With her skillset, she could have easily done a plethora of riffs and made them fit beautifully, but this one she decided to showcase her pure tone with many straight on pitch notes coloured by vibrato for a clean rendition and at the end gave it a Tori twist combining Freeeee with the And + sweet run to then bring it home. This is one I'd love for her to repeat at a superbowl, as it has that unique element, that will make it known as one of the greatest versions on the biggest sporting stage!

I agree with this! A lot of people think singing the anthem well is proving yourself to be a good singer. Trying to do that actually has the opposite effect and I'm SO glad Tori gets this!!!

How do you get that fluttery, shimmer vibrato that she implements on the end of words? It sounds more like pulsating

That is such a LOADED question. The most insight I can give is that some singers move between their natural vibrato and a mechanical "pulsing" of the note like what you described. That may be what she's doing here, but I'm actually thinking her placement shifted the speed of her natural vibrato. But that's ALLL speculation!

Tori definitely killed it! For me, I can't compare her and Whitney Houston's is because Whitney blazed a TRAIL for pop singers in terms of how to perform this particular song. Innovators stand on the shoulders of the originators, so there would be no them without the original. But again, Tori did SUPER well! 🙂👏🏾
