I was Teutonic Knight medieval reenactor. This song reminds me of those days when I was wearing this uniform in historical medieval battles, years 2011-2015. Nice memories. I met lot of German reenactors doing the same period.

They only sing three stanzas of nine. Walter von der Vogelweide, the poet, did not join the crusade himself. Most of the song is about the life of Jesus and how glad the crusader is to see these places himself. It will also be the place of the last judgement, Walter says, so crusader, be aware, that widows and orphans will raise their voice. (Against you too if it's your fault.) But it IS a war song, and includes the lines "All the world is warring here; / we are pursuing a just claim, / so it is just that He grant it." (But they don't sing it here.) The singer has a Yiddish accent, singing "verkoifen" (to sell) with oi instead of "verkoufen" with ow. The pronunciation of medieval German is often done wrong, even by German native speakers.
