VOGE 500DS Review & Honda CB500X Comparison With Nathan Millward
So I met up with Nathan Millward so he could try the VOGE 500DS and he thought it would be a good idea to put it up against the Honda CB500X which make sense as they are similar bike's in the main.
We went for a ride and then pulled over for a chat about the bikes. It was good to talk to Nathan and we pretty much came up with the same conclusions about the bikes. Have a look at Dorothys speed shop website here-

Brilliant ride and interview, jeez Nathan knows his stuff. I could listen to him talk bikes for ages. I'm loving how you are able to test these bikes over different driving conditions and a good time period because its a more accurate review rather than have a bike for a quick road test and try to give a educated viewpoint. 👍

Good to hear two peoples views of two “similar” bikes, especially as I’m a 500X owner. I’m keeping mine for the time being as I find it fun to ride. Why, only today whilst out on a ride I thought to myself, why would you want anything bigger than a 500cc bike for riding around country lanes, etc.? Unless you munch motorway miles, there’s no need for anything bigger.

I ride a 2017 CB500X and have really enjoyed 4yrs of trouble free ownership. The engine being 'soft tuned' has a reputation for being bullet proof and the bike is often used by long distance adventurers. Having confidence in a machine certainly adds to the pleasure of ownership. Having said that, choices and competition within the industry can only benefit the consumer and the Voge looks to be a very good bike indeed for the money. Good comparison. Thanks.

Great ride and review! I like that you are getting other peoples opinion on the bike. Makes for a more well rounded review. The dealership network could be an issue though. We have that problem with European bikes here in the US. For instance, if I wanted to buy a KTM, I would have to travel 12 hours out of state to the closest dealer. Imagine that trip every time you need service done. Real good video!!

I totally agree, although I haven't ridden the 502 (due to bad luck and someone dropping the demo bike when I could have a go so had to be mended) I really think the 502TRK is a good bike, spares backup is good and seat comfort seems good. Most importantly, people were saying the same thing about the TRK back in 2018 as they are the VOGE and infact the TRK is still here doing well and outselling any other bike in Italy....for good reason. I am crying out to get on one!!

Having given a Benelli TRK502 a look over the other day, they’ve got a long way to go to get close to a Japanese bike. Very poor build quality and would be seen off in one salty British winter. £5k up in smoke, but look at the resale values of Honda’s right now, off the charts. Voge I shall reserve judgement until I’ve seen one, as a 500X owner myself.

Got this as my first bike last year. It is a bike that is very easy to ride. Handling is smooth, good acceleration but not to strong for a beginner like me, easy to do J turns or figure 8 with as I figured out when I practiced and comfortable to ride. A bit to much vibration I suppose at higher rpm though ✌️ I find it's easier to hold a constant speed at lower rpm compared to bikes I used at the school which was better at holding constant speed without problems at higher rpm. A bit small rear seat, feels unsecured as a passenger compared to other bikes I've been passenger on. My dealer talked about seat widener should be developed soon for longer rides fir the rear seat.

As in France, comments say "it's a good surprise". I'm buying one (the bike will be ready in fews days) and I feel rather confident. Voge suggests to change the gearbox output pinion (one extra tooth) to decrease vivrations after 5000 rpm... I'll see the result in few days. Thank you for you video.

So another great comparison would be between the Voge and the Benelli TRK502. (Maybe the CF Moto too) The Benelli and Voge are very similar in price and spec. The Voge is a bit lighter which is a good thing.. My personal issue with all these "adventure" bikes though is not just the weight but where they carry it. Depending on how much "adventure" you're actually going to do (and it's worth mentioning the Voge DSX has bigger front and spoked wheels) The new Honda NC750X carries it's weight much lower, is more "practical" and has presumed Honda build quality, Albeit at a considerable price premium. Personally, I just went and had a look at a Voge but came home with the feeling I'd rather spend the extra on the Honda NC750X.
@exeterrider

Hi, yes the dsx wasn't around when I test rode this one. The 750x is my choice for my touring bike, the 500 is more of a commuter, but can dabble in touring too. The trk800 will be out next year. That will be interesting. Thanks for watching 👍🍻

Two very similar bikes on the surface but I'd have reservations about Voge ownership long term. My 500X is used and lives outdoors year round in costal Pembrokeshire. The finish is proving very durable with the exception of the bracket which holds the screen in place showing a bit of corrosion now (easy to fix). As a sunny day/Sunday bike, the Voge appears to be a nice little machine which you both agreed has great performance for a 500 and I do think the Honda could have a bit more oomph on certain occasions. But, as a year round costal commuter I think the Chinese bike would quickly show where the money was saved to get it to the price point they have. I'd rather pay the extra for the peace of mind and reputation Honda quality gives.

As I previously said, the quality and finish of the bike TODAY is not a deciding factor for me. I recently watched a video of a Chinese bike dealer who was complaining due to the inability of HIS mechanic to get His bike tuned properly. (BTW, he sells most of the major Chinese brands and rides a Honda) As a contrast, my Royal Enfield dealer also sells Kawasaki, KTM and is the local Indian dealer. Trained certified technicians service his customers bikes. He can build a bike out of his parts inventory, or replace an engine. The Chinese have simply not caught onto that aspect of service yet, and they may never do so. Until they move their dealer network out of the back allies, side streets and storage sheds they will never present a viable product to own long term.
@exeterrider
@exeterrider 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I know what you ,mean with all that. The thing is with all of this is they need to build the brands, and then it will pay for itself to get the bigger dealerships and they must also get the spares back up, get the confidence back and understand what the customer needs. They have a big up hill battle before they earn trust. It's a shame when this bike really is a gooden, I really hope they can make it work. The distributors of VOGE are really nice people and they are working hard in the background to make it happen.

Good video...My question is that the CB500x engine can do over 100 K miles without a problem, and many do. Would you have the same confidence in a Chinese copy of it? The Voge service intervals of only 3000 miles reflect the confidence of the manufacturer. I just bought an old (2014) CB500x with only 2K miles on it for just 3 grand and it's a superb bike, I'd trust it much more than a new Chinese copy. Mine has a 17 inch front wheel and the handling is superb, does green lanes as well. For the Voge it's problem is consumer confidence and Honda reliability.
@exeterrider
@exeterrider 2 жыл бұрын
I think the 3000mile interval is more about extra revenue for the VOGE dealers as opposed to not having confidence in there engine. Although you say its a copy of the 500x , and without riding it I can see why you say that but , although they are trying to make the same product as the 500x ....I agree, but the VOGE does ride alot better , feels sportier , its better for road riding, and when riding, it is a lot different than the 500x. But it's not a direct copy. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@exeterrider Hi, I disagree about your assumption that dealer service revenue is the reason. No manufacturer would do that, it's a negative for the product. I can't find it now but there was a photo floating around on the net of the Loncin motor opened up and showing cam wear at low mileage. I can't find the link but I'm not making it up. To get the price lower than the Honda (built in Thailand) cuts have to be made. Not just to slave labour wages but also the quality of every single item. You get what you pay for. Would you really buy one with your own hard earned savings...If so good luck with that!

@@Paul_Grace fair enough. You can't get better than Honda quality, I'm not doubting that for a second. But to my knowledge the BMW 750, 850f and gs, and the XR just for example which use the loncin engine don't seem to have many faults. Maybe I'm wrong. Also I feel that these bigger service intervals makes the bike more saleable. I think on the early models of the 500x the servicing was alot less, and the engine hasn't changed too much over the years. I have no doubht that they're is a photo going around showing that, but they're are others as well with blown up engines etc. I don't think it's as good as Honda quality, but the VOGE rides and feels better, that's the bottom line for me. First! Really interesting comparison and review. I think there is something there but not fully developed yet, for me. after my experience on mine I've really lost confidence in cheap Chinese bikes. The dealership are Going to try and make money at every chance, they are a business but that 2000 service interval and higher costs in the short term and specialist parts they use that you can't easily find fixed it for me are unexpected bills and hurt more. I learned a lot about what I want and equally what I don't. I just want to ride not worry about reliability and trying to find repairs or upgrade parts. As for the service intervals, for the Voge 500DS/500DSX are every 5000 kilometers and for the CB500X are every 6000 kilometers (what the dealership proposes to do) , although Honda says you can do it every 12000 kilometres but for me it is too much, so I would do it at around 8000 kilometers. The main difference between these two is the price. In Greece, a Honda CB500X with the amount of equipment of the Voge is around 2000€ more.

imo it doesnt matter how the voge feels. it has to prove itself in the long term and right now i doubt it will. at the end you compare a known to be good bike with a "totaly new, dont know what to exspect bike". overall maintaning, part availability, resell value are importent too. things like driving without any issiue the first few years is something i exspect from every new bike anyway no matter what. longterm quality is what counts, things like rust or brittle plastics. for just 1000€ its a no brainer, cb500x all the way. dont get me wrong, i drive a chinese bike myself. the price difference was huge, i knew what i get and i can do things myself. but many peopel buy things like that and think the can hold up with well known brands. if you get a better price or dont care about long term usage, you have a garage to mostly leave it dark and dry and can work on it yourself than maybe. that being said, while the 500ds can make some sense i think the 650ds is totally pointless.

O for sure, I agree, I can't go through every little thing but all that goes without saying. Time will tell, but compared to many other premium bikes I ride, mechanicly speak g it all feels very tight and plush, it also rides better than the 500x....so that is a very good start. As long as VOGE gain traction with dealership network etc then they will be laughing..... For example, in the UK, every part for the VOGE is avaliable within 24 hours.... That's amazing and you can't say that for many other brands, especially in this climate, so VOGE know what they need to do and they are doing it..... Very well 👍🍻
