Vogue is referring to voguing, which is a dance move and what you see in the video performed by Madonna and her background signers and dancers. It was popularized in the 70s and 80s in NYC underground queer 'balls' (gatherings particularly frequented by trans and queer people of colour) who were very marginalized at the time. It was a way for young, frequently poor marginalized people to fantasize about being rich and opulent... and the name probably came from the magazine as many of the moves were lifted from glamour 'poses' from Vogue and other high fashion magazines [i.e. - to 'strike a pose']. Madonna brought the dance phenomenon into the mainstream, showcasing dancers who were openly gay and part of the 'ball' scene, and equated the dance with old Hollywood, which she also has been personally inspired by.

`Vogue, or "voguing", is a highly stylized, modern house dance originating in the late 1980s that evolved out of the Harlem ballroom scene of the 1960s. It gained mainstream exposure when it was featured in Madonna's song and video "Vogue" (1990)` According to Wikipedia. Please react to What it feels like for a girl and Die another day.

*"She's got more hits...." lol. love the way you said that, when, in reality, Madonna holds, among other records, THE MOST #1 HITS of ANY ARTIST on ALL Billboard charts combined.* *Billboard named her the Highest Ranking Solo Artist on the their Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, #2 behind only The Beatles.. not bad company!* *She also just scored her 50th #1 Dance Song/Club hit... putting her far ahead of anyone else.* *The records go on & on... just like Madonna's career has!* *She is DEF worthy of a deeper look... she ain't The Reigning Queen of Pop 40 years after her debut for nothing!* 👑

Agreed. This video was not controversial at all. Erotica and Justify My Love caused a sh*t storm. Justify My Love is my favorite Madonna song (it features Lenny Kravitz singing in the background).

Every time I hear this song I just think about the line “look around everywhere you turn is heartache. It’s everywhere that you go…. “ and now it’s so clear to see the idea of hiv spreading around NYC and people trying to have fun and survive at the balls. For me, in Argentina, the other side of the world it was a superficial song about fashion but it was a real deep song

This was actually the height of her career. She was at the top of her game then. Vogue was a presentation like dance that was popular in underground gay dance clubs. Madonna brought it into the mainstream with this song. It was a huge hit for her in 1990.
@bryanCJC21052 жыл бұрын
When this song would come on, everyone would flood the dance floors. It was huge in the dance clubs. This song was the biggest hit of 1990. Disco never really died and this song brought dance music back to the forefront. "Vogue" dancing came from the Black/Latino Drag/Transvestite/Transgender underground ballroom clubs of Harlem in NYC back in the late 80s. Many of the participants lived together in "Houses" as a family as they were alone, poor, lacked resources, and needed community to survive. These "Houses" held dance competitions and "Vogueing" became a popular dance style. Madonna was intrigued by the dance form and she brought it to the mainstream. Many in the underground LGBT "Ballroom culture" thought this might be a break for them but, it ended up passing them by because... well, you know. As for other Madonna songs. She has many many hit singles. Lots of them. She was one of the biggest culture influencers of the 80s. She has two main styles: dance and kind of a soulful/pop sound. Her dance sound definitely evolved, she always had a sophisticated soulful/R&B/Pop sound For dance, I think one of these might be good for you to listen to (not in any order): "Like A Virgin (1984)", "Borderline (1983)", "Hung Up (2005)", "Ray Of Light (1998)" For soulful/pop, I think one of these might be good for you to listen to: "Rain (1993)", "Crazy For You (1985)", "Live to Tell (1986)", "Like A Prayer (1989)"

”Voguing” was extremely poupular in the gay clubs, Madonna took that dance and made it into a commercial hit. Check the TV-serie ”Pose”, it’s all about that era and the ballrooms.

This actually came out at one of the first high points of Madonna’s career, when she was about to embark on her Blonde Ambition Tour which would change the landscape of pop art tours from then on, as well as the release of her documentary, “Truth Or Dare”. A very epic period in her career. The video was directed by David Fincher, who did multiple videos of hers before he went on to success with films like Fight Club, Seven and Zodiac. Can’t wait to see what other videos of hers you guys check out. “What It Feels Like For a Girl” is a personal favorite.

This was #1 in 1990 both the U.S. & UK. Madonna is a bonafide professional dancer. May I recommend either Express Yourself or Keep It Together both LIVE from her Blonde Ambition Tour 1990. Otherwise check her video Into The Groove 1985 The video are snippets of a movie where she played a major part, she looks stunning and pure energy! Your reaction says it all! Fab!!!

Madonna started performing when she was a teenager in the 70’s. Her ballet teacher, a gay man, was the first who told her that she was beautiful and had something to offer the world. I believe he was also the person who encouraged her to move to New York and pursue a career as a professional dancer rather than stay at the University of Michigan. I believe it is also her former dance teacher who introduced her to the local gay community of Detroit, Michigan where she may or may not have performed… but she has stated in the past that she probably wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for the gay community. She’s talked about feeling different as a teenager but found acceptance and sympathy among gay friends. That was a group that took her in and accepted her for who she was. As far as popularity goes, she is the best-selling female music artist of all time. She is the most successful solo artist in the history of the US _Billboard_ Hot 100 chart and holds the record for the most number-one singles by a female artist in Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, and the UK. How do I know some of this info? We the gays know… 😂 PS- please don’t at me - I am not generalizing and assuming that the entire gay community loves and knows everything about Madonna. I know we all have different tastes and like different things. I also love that past time where sometimes it requires full body contact other times, not so much… it just depends who you’re doing it but one thing is for sure; they all require playing with balls… and you get to play with balls full body contact you get to play with balls… what’s that thing called. 🤔 Sports! That’s what I meant. I also love sports.

That song/video was far from the begining of her career, "Vogue" was released in 1990, 8 years into her career. she's also not an overnight success. It took her a few years in New york peddling her demos, before she release her first single "everybody" in 1982 and her first album "Madonna" a year later.

This video was not considered controversial. Justify My Love and Erotica were highly controversial and when you consider the decade they were released it’s pretty shocking. Madonna was never afraid to express herself through her artistry even knowing their would be major backlash. And yes, a Madonna journey would be awesome! Her portfolio of music is massive spanning decades. ✌🏻🙂✌🏻

In comparison to her live MTV Awards performance of Vogue, with all costumed in Marie Antoinette fashion - that was, at the time, pushing things with sexual innuendo on live tv; you should react to that one too for her live vocals. … Her Super Bowl Halftime Show (especially the stadium entrance) can’t be matched, and much more recent age-wise, vocals, dancing … phenomenal event! 👍🏼
