Go to where it says "DaVinci Resolve" in bold in the upper left corner of the screen, click on Preferences, then click to Video and Audio I/O, go to the Input device drop down and you should see your device of choice show up there, and then just repeat the steps of this video.

Hey, thanks for the video. Have you recorded something diggint a bit further like why is it that the voiceover track is recorded mono and how to finish the project with stereo sound and also something about the ideal treatment/adjustment for the voiceover audio so it sounds as best as possible? thanks again
@JasonYadlovski Жыл бұрын
Hi! You can just have your audio track in mono and any other tracks in stereo and make sure you final output is in stereo. As for room treatment, try and limit any reverb/echo buy using blankets, carpets, etc. When it comes to post processing, set good audio levels, apply EQ if needed, some compression and I like a multi band compressor. Is the Fairlight page the only place in DaVinci Resolve where you can record voiceover? Because when I record voiceover, it's actually play-by-play, and I'm calling the action in the video window. So I would need the video window to be much bigger than it appears in the Fairlight page.

davinci seems like realy one of the best allrounder softwares out there. When i was 13 i downloaded FL STUDIO and use it to this day.. for recordings i also used adobe audition, but when it comes to record voice anywhere else it will be not easy to change, but i want so bad, because now im using davinci and premiere for everything else, and i want ONE SOFTWARE to do everything, but it seems its nostalgic or something like that which holds me back, but i always loved the VST integration in fl studio and how easy is to use vst plugins and the layout and everything, but i think i realy need to give it a try to record and edit vocals in davinci too

Thanks for the audio guidance. For recording directly into into Davinci Resolve, I bought a Scarlett 2i2 to use with a Windows Book 3. Do you know if Fairlight will NOT work with the ASIO drivers that the Scarlett uses?
@JasonYadlovski3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’ve heard that in the past Resolve didn’t play nice with ASIO drivers but I thought that was mainly a headphone issue. I work on a Mac so I don’t personally have that problem. Is it not working for you to record from the audio interface?
@bobbullard14393 жыл бұрын
I couldn't get it to work on my Microsoft Book 3 that exceeded the Davinci Resolve minimum requirements...did a search...landed on a Blackmagic Design forum with disappointed windows users complaining ASIO drivers were NOT supported by Davinci Resolve. On Windows, the Scarlett uses these drivers...damn... .

@@JasonYadlovski The Scarlett 2i2 can use WMD drivers, but these drivers don't feature low latency and multi-channel recording support. @JasonYadlovski12 күн бұрын
Assuming you were able to patch everything OK and also arm the track to record, it may just be the input monitoring settings. Go to the fair light menu, down to input monitoring, change the settings in there and you might get the meters to move and have it work. If you’re still not getting any signal, there’s probably a problem with the patch.

Thank you Jason! Why do you record in mono? Is there a specific reason not to record it in stereo mode?
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
The advantage of Mono is that you get equal vocals to both speakers. For talking head stuff or tutorials, you don't really need stereo channels. But honestly, most of the time now my talking tracks end up being stereo. 😁 You can really do either way.

@@JasonYadlovski I just started using DaVinci 2 days ago. Thanks for your advise though. Here's a better explaination on what I need and you can direct me to the exact video I need to watch. Thanks in advance. I'm a former Windows Movie Maker user. Scene: I'm creating a tutorial and i.e., my dog barks so, before I upload to KZbin, I have to "erase" the original audio and do a voice over (with my dog in the other room...lol). In WMM you'd just move the "video volume" to off then you could record the new voice over.

Congrats on getting started with Resolve! You can just select your audio clip, open the inspector, click on the Audio tab at the top, then reduce the volume for that clip to 0. Done! you've muted the clip. Now you can just record a voice over on a new track and you should be all set.

I understood everything but am curious to know why do we choose "mono"? Also, how do we speed up the playback velocity? Say I was reading something to record it and I want it to be a bit faster...
@JasonYadlovski3 жыл бұрын
Typically mono is used so that you get the same dialogue audio from both the right and left channels. A mono signal sends the audio equally to both right and left, whereas Stereo will allow for different panning of the audio. Typically you want vocals coming from the front/center unless you are working with 5.1 surround sound.

Hey Jason, I'm about to do my voice-over for my latest video. I was wondering is there any benefit or differences if I were to record on Stereo instead of Mono? And vice-versa. Would love to hear your input. Thanks 😊

Hi! I think generally voiceovers are done in mono but really either is fine. Depends if do you want to do any stereo Effects or not. Can’t go wrong either way.

I feel dense but I haven't been able to get this working using my PC's builtin mike. (Obviously, sound quality isn't an issue.) I select what I *think* is the mike on the "Patch..." menu in Fairlight and arm the recording but no sounds register. Is there something brain-dead I'm doing wrong? The mike works because I use it in Zoom and the PC's voice recorder. I've tried several times with no luck. Any ideas? I hate to bother you but this is the penalty you get for being helpful. :-)

Hello Jason, many thanks for this very explanatory video. One question: is it possible to linger longer in specific seconds if we have a longer text of voiceover allocated for these seconds? Is it possible for example to stop the video, but still continue to record our voiceover?
@JasonYadlovski4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes you can do that. There's different ways to do it. The easiest might be to make a cut where you want the video to 'stop or linger' then create a freeze frame (go to 'Clip' menu at the top and then Freeze Frame) for as long as you'd like, then go back to the clip when you want the video to play. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Hey Jason, Great video and thanks! I will definitely be doing normal voice-overs so that helps a ton but I am also wondering if there is a way to do this in Davinci Resolve or really any NLE but for "live" commentary/voice-over (not sure really what to call it) so I can pause or rewind or skip forward or whatever in the video. Or, is the only way to do this through a screen capture program? I really want to maintain the quality of the audio and video and not use a screen capture program if at all possible but guessing that is the only way to currently do it (sigh). Anyways, thanks again!
@JasonYadlovski3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thanks! I don't see why you can't do it right in resolve. There's also the ADR features where you can always go back and fix stuff. I don't think there's much difference if you did it in a screen recording or just right in resolve. I'm sure there is a way, but I can't tell you specifically without knowing the situation your using it in. Thanks for watching!

@@JasonYadlovski Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I think that's very interesting and definitely will be useful in the future but I am not sure that's what I am looking for right now. Basically, I want to do a freestyle, real-time director's/editor's commentary over my video I edited in Resolve where basically I am playing my video in real time and commenting (doing a voice-over) but sometimes I will want skip around in the video and add some voice-over/commentary here and there. I guess the way to describe it is that I would want Resolve to keep track of where I am in the video and record it (or create a new timeline) and record my voice-over audio at the same time. For instance, I might be at the beginning of my video and might want to jump forward to the end to do a comparison of those two parts of the video and then jump back to where I was and I want Resolve to capture it all in real time. Also, I might slow down the video in parts to make it clearer for people watching what happened or speed up a less important part or loop a part, etc. I guess I could just reedit my video to what I want to highlight and talk about and then add the voice-over and do it that way but I was looking to do it in more of a real-time, less formal (and easier) way, and if I want to add anything or make any mistakes while I am doing this, I could add to it or fix/rerecord it later. Anyways, at this point, unless you have any other suggestions, I guess the two best/only ways to do it are either to reedit the video (or really make a new video out of the original) to include only the parts I want to include and then add the voice-over after or to use a screen capture program to do it or a combination of both. Thanks again!
