A California medic soldier who was stationed in Iraq, told me about the time she and her companions heard this song for the first time. In her words “Although I heard the original hundreds of time, this one pierced my heart like a bullet. There were no dry eyes in the room” Mission accomplished Angelina. Thank you for your honest reaction and keep up the good work.

A little history about the song: John and Michelle Phillips were spending a cold winter in New York City (1963) singing with another group before they formed the M & P's. Michelle was from L. A. and was longing for the sunshine and the beach. It began to snow, which she had never seen, so they went for a walk in the snow. They got cold so they "stopped into a church", hence the line "got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray", as they were only there to get warm. They returned to their apartment and wrote this song. Later they moved to L. A. and gave the song to their friend Barry McGuire ("Eve of Destruction") who released it with little success. In 1965, John and Michelle, with Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty, formed The Mamas and Papas, and released this as a single from their debut album. It was very successful, and rose to #4 on the charts. It was an upbeat version with Denny singing the lead vocal part. Along comes this little 12 year old girl and totally transforms this classic pop song: slows it way down, changes a few notes, acoustic guitar only, and gives it a bluesie, jazz vibe. And Voila! A MASTERPIECE!! If you think of the mood behind John and Michelle creating the song, Angelina's version fits much better; they were sad and blue and longed for better times. Michelle is the only surviving member of the group, and what she posted on the M and P's Facebook/Instagram site was incredible praise for what Angelina had done with their song; she absolutely loved it, and she loved Angelina as a young singer. This is my favorite performance by Angelina. In no small way because of how she transforms this classic pop song into something brand new. But also because her delivery of the song is just FANTASTIC! As always Valerie, I love your reactions to Angelina. Looking forward to the next one. 💕💕

Great art is about knowing and mastering all the rules - and then breaking them deliberately to achieve your own artistic goal, - like Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinskij - and Beethoven and many others creating new paths for the arts to flow. All these artists mentioned (and many not mentioned) started by copying the great masters of the past, learning their secrets and techniques, before starting on their own ways. I believe Angelina has the gift and intelligence to perceive to the ground the characteristics of every song and singer she listens to - perhaps intuitively - and because she is aware of the details in their voices and their interpretation, she is able to copy their ways of singing, their ways of using colors, embellishments, dynamics and so on, collecting these characteristics into a set of vocal tools she can choose from to create the covers in the exact way she wants them to be. And just because she is able to make an exact copy, she can transform the song into her own by doing things differently - by being concious about what she wants to be done differently and why she wants it that way - and knowing exactly where she is parting from the original. I also believe that growing up singing jazz tells a young singer that very much in music is up to you. In jazz there is a musical frame to be kept, but there are no notes that can't be altered or embellished, you don't have to place the notes exactly on the beat, the notes have no fixed value, and you can slide in or out of pitch at the demand of your emotions there and then. - In contrast to what in our time is taught in many other genres of music. That is what Angelina has learnt. The text is meant to be made your own, the rules are there to be broken, - and she amazes us evey time with her surprising performances.

Valerie is always really nice to discover a your new reaction with Angelina, very beautiful as usual. 🤗 I don't think there are many 12 year old girls who can take a classic song from more than 55 years ago, which was basically a ballad, and turn it into a slow, melancholy song that captures your heart by filling it of emotions. The musical intelligence with which she reinterprets and reworks the old songs she loves, in a way that is uniquely hers and transforming them with the passion she instills in them, is truly incredible. The amazing little girl with Donald Ducks ❤️❤️

The best description of her is that she's a 'human chameleon'. Whereas the lizard changes it's external color at will to match the surroundings, Angelina does it vocally. With the vast range of voice and soul she has, it allows her to explore such a large range of song types. She is the most versatile singer of excellence that I have ever heard and it blows my mind to think what she will be when she fully matures into an adult?

I've noticed that in virtually every Angelina, you can comprehend the dialog unlike some. In her performances where she doesn't use a prerecorded backing track, the changes the pacing to match the emotion she wants to convey in her performance. She's a brilliant artist.

I agree with you... it is the perfect setup when it's just Angelina and a guitarists. In this setting, her voice really stands out, but something even more important, is that she is able to control the pacing and flow of the song in the moment. Both Ivan (seen here) and Egil (when she is in Norway) are very good at watching her and following her lead. She has done so much great stuff with those two. There are also other examples of her and a single guitar that also show this... "Bang Bang", "Every Time We Say Goodbye", "Faded" (2017). All incredible, and all just her and a guitarist. ...all that being said, she can also own the stage with a full orchestra or military band behind her ;)

Thank you Valerie for this. It don`t get much better than this. You are so right, she has this great idea of slowing down and giving space for emotions and mindfulness. I have not heard or seen her express it directly, but for sure I have the feeling that her mind goes towards the idea that "less is more" at quite many times. One more great example of that, is her amazing version of "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak. I thought you had reacted to that one, but I can`t find it, so may be not. If not, her is what she can achieve with only her voice and one singel instrument, in this case a piano, as she masters herself. Even stronger emotions appears in this one, and I simply have to get back to this one every now and then. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3qkfnlqe6mZrZY This is only short instagram clips live performing video, but the video (fan-made) simply goes amazingly well allong with this great performance, oozing Angelina all the way.

Although it's difficult to choose I think this is my favourite among Angelina's covers. Mesmerizing, with those little 'twirls' (I don't have the vocabulary) at the ends of the phrases. I am leaning more towards a middle eastern style, more associated with the Moorish style used by many Spanish singers. If you hear music, particularly from Andaluz, Spain. Not rare because Angelina does have a middle eastern background and Ivan Mendez the guitarist is from Spain and trained in classical guitar.

I'm curious what you think of her tendency to turn "n"s into "m"s (e.g., "on such a winmter day"). This isn't the only song in which she does that. Where do you think that came from? Is there some "good reason" she might do it (i.e., some "vocal technique" reason)? I am tempted to think it might have come from her growing up hearing Japanese (in which the nasal consonant sound in a word can be pronounced like an "m" or "n" depending on the context - her mother, uncle, and maternal grandparents can/could all speak Japanese), but I don't think that explanation really works, because the cases where she does it don't seem to match patterns heard in Japanese (in particular, "winter" would be pronounced "wintah" in standard Japanese pronunciation, not "wimtah" [AFAIK]).
