This song was so fitting for both Anneke and Roel. Roel wrote, and sang, it with his late father, who encouraged him to sing and pursue a career in music. And Anneke's entire life is about singing. It's her life support. She was so enthusiastic in this performance that she almost blew her pipes. She admitted that afterwards. :) Overall I'd say it didn't quite showcase what she's really capable of, yet. I'm so curious about the next BZ shows. Anneke's clear melodic vocal lines were pioneering in metal back in '95. Together with a few others she opened a pathway for symphonic metal and related sub-genres. The Gathering's landmark album 'Mandylion' (1995), her first with them, was clearly very influential at the time, and considered by some as 'the pinnacle of goth metal'. Musicians like Devin Townsend, Danny Cavanagh, Sharon den Adel and Tuomas Holopainen drew inspiration from that and successive TG albums. Bands like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Nightwish and Evanescence were influenced by TG's soundscapes and Anneke's melodies and stage performances. TG developed from metal to more trippy/Floydy rock in the 00's though, but they'd forever be known as melodic metallers. All their albums with Anneke were top notch, despite them being all quite different from the earliest TG albums. You did react to Anneke performing a TG song with VuuR last year ('On Most Surfaces'). For further reactions we'd all recommend to check the signature performances of The Gathering's 25th anniversary concerts: 'Travel' and 'Waking Hour'. After those, I'd just recommend a long listen to their full 'A Sound Relief' concert (2005). Anneke did so much more worth digging into, but let's keep that for later. :)

Anneke is the godmother of Dutch sympho metal. Floor is very much inspired by her. And Roel knows what's coming. The story bhind makes me appreciate it so much better. Anneke is a sweetheart!

What struck me about this episode is that, beside the great singers, the songs of Roel van Velzen just stand out. They have a timeless quality with inspiration from the great artists. The song is indeed by the guy the camera turns to, Roel van Velzen. Roel was one of the original coaches on The Voice of Holland and the revolving chairs in the Blind Auditions were hís idea.

The song was written by Roel van Velzen and his first hit and sung in a duet with his father who passed away. the Song is based upon his admiration for the Beatles. The piccolo trumpet added by the band to the end of the song is a reference to the Beatles.

I'm glad Beste Zangers is back. The line-up this year is better than last year in my opinion. Of course I love Anneke, but Karsu, Roel van Velzen and Belle Perez are amazing too. And then there is the surprise for me: Alides Hidding. I used to hate the hit he had in the 80s (I'm specialized in you), but back in the day I only liked metal. My taste matured now, and I actually like this song. But his performance at Beste Zangers really blew me away! Amazing!

A new leader for your channel, very nice :D This is a song by the guy in the hotseat, Roel van Velzen, he wrote this song (i think) with his father who also sang with his son on this song. They had a strong bond and music was their life, they shared a deep love for older music, especially the Beatles. (As you'll have notice that some Beatles lyrics, popped up in this song) Sadly his father has passed on and we'll never hear them sing this together again. Roel is a very talented musician, but he didnt get it from strangers so to speak, he got his talent from both his parents. His father.. he had a amazing voice of his own, very VERY similar to Paul McCartney actually, its uncanny how similar their voices are. And then we get Anneke who sings this great and joyful song and of course she nailed it, such power and joy she radiates, she did what she does best, sing and entertain. Whenever Anneke sings, you can "hear" her smile, you can feel the fun she's having, the love she has for singing and performing, she puts smiles on faces. WE are terribly spoiled to have all these amazing singers in our tiny little country, we know that very well, but we also like to share all we have, with the world. And this show helps us to share our talents with the world, we have Floor to thank for that a great deal, with her our country was put on the map as a serious music nation. First of all Anneke is Dutch, from the Braband province (spoiler, she will sing in that dialect in the next episode) and the funny thing about you saying you got a Beatles vibe from it is something that you missed in the song. She sings 'Strawberry fields forever", "a long and winding road", "got to get you into my life", which are of course all Beatles songs.

It's about a girl in Africa who was raped by rebels when she was just 12 years old. She got pregnant by the rebels and her whole village rejected her..She had to work hard to make something of her life on her own and she did. She now has a business of her own. Roel van Velzen en Karsu are some kind of ambassadors. They visited her and heard her story. Roel wrote this song for her. He also made a deal with her that she owns a part of the song. Everytime the song brings up money she will get some of it.

We know that Anneke is a great, great singer. Anneke sang a few years ago in the Knight's Hall (the castle where Parliament is) singing for military veterans and the King. So, she is well known over here. For me the revelation of the year 2021 beste zangers is Karsu. She is just Fantasticly Amazing! And I did not even know her at all. I saw also some video of her not singing and she seems so sweet.

Anneke is well known in the Netherlands, but it has been a while (25 years) ago. This is a different story than Floor Jansen. This video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3m4fqqfo7tld7M) of the performance of her band The Gathering on the Pinkpop festival was on national television in 1996 and it had a huge impact. About 10.000 people in the audience (including me) and more than a million watching it on tv. That sparkling redhead girl singing dark music with a beautiful smile made many metalheads fall in love with her. Floor Jansen has mentioned in several interviews that this very performance inspired her to sing in metal bands. And I bet all the other Dutch female metal singers have seen that video too. I’m looking forward to the broadcast of the Anneke edition. I hope Karsu will be performing the song Strange Machines. She’s the only one who’s just as sparkling as Anneke was back then.

Anne van Giersbergen was the former frontvoice of the Doom- and Progressiv-Metal-Band "The Gathering" and started in early 90th. After this term she works in different solo projects and in colaborations with other bands in the metalscene - for example with "Within Temptaion" or "Moonspell", but most with Arjen Lucassen in some projects and as a special guest.

normally they record the program on the island of Ibiza. because of corona they stayed in the Netherlands. the program is recorded in the southernmost province of the Netherlands: limburg. that lies between belgium and germany. the netherlands is flat, except there in limburg..

Unfortunately, in the US, the music market emphasizes a certain look or entertainers, not necessarily performers with a good vocal/singing ear. Auto tune and lip synch “fixes” many things. That’s not to say there aren’t good vocalist in the US, but most (in my opinion) are from other areas of the world. You have to dig a bit deeper to find them.

True. You have got to know one thing. Avro/Tros (the broadcaster) is state tv. Kinda difficult to explain in short. But the essence is that they have supported dutch music for years. They always promote new talent. It is kind of a rule that a broadcaster who is on state tv has to promote culture and they do it this way. Not to say the other broadcasters on the network dont do this but they do it another way or focus on other culture things. State tv has 3 channels on which several broadcasters, well .... broadcast :-). Each one originate from a different group of people in society, like christians, socialists, catholics, etc. etc. Avro/Tros originates from the liberals. Maybe this info explains a bit why we dutch have so much culture on tv from different angles.

@heenez believe me, it is very hard to do a lot of autotuning of a live singer, with a live band behind it. The brass section spills into the vocalist mic. Autotuning the vocalist will get the brass spill out of tune, so light "fixes" can be made, but no huge changes. You can even hear Anneke getting a little out of tune in the end of the song, because she was so into the music, she almost "broke" her voice, so she went a bit out off tune, but that makes this so real instead of an over produced show.

@heenez true, but there is a difference between fixing up and overdone autotune. There is nothing wrong with fixing up for television shows, but the're a lot of shows, even on Dutch TV that just over do it, but I can't accuse Beste Zangers from over doing it, that was my point. I don't do live recordings that much, mostly live mixing, but I know the technology has come far enough to exclude most of the spill and that is great, not only for fixing vocal pitch, but also to get a cleaner mix. I love the live recordings of Nightwish a lot. Clean but very powerfull, especialy the Wacken, Wembley and Tampere live shows. Where are you from if I may ask?

@heenez yeah, solo a vocal on a unedited recording and post editing. Difference of day and night haha. On the other hand, even a post edit vocal on solo can still sound weird, but in the mix it will blend very well. Most made beginners mistake in my opinion: make all individual tracks sound good on their own, can make a big mess in a mix because they eat each others space up. Aah cool, also a Dutchman. I live in the Achterhoek. Is audio your main occupation?

Perhaps the Dark Horse of this season is Bökkers, he is quite populair in the lower saxon area (because he sings in dialect). Hey Valerie, great reaction like always. I have to correct you though. You said Anneke is not from Holland, and to be really specific that's true, however overhere in The Netherlands we have two provinces called; Noord and Zuid Holland. Northern Holland is the province where Amsterdam and The Hague are in, and the province of Southern Holland is where the port city of Rotterdam (Davina Michelle was born here)is. Now.... Anneke was born in Sint-Michelsgestel, which is a small town near the city of Eindhoven (think Philips, the Dutch electrical appliances company), in the province of Noord Braband. Well I asume you can guess by now that Anneke is still a Dutchie.
