I would recommend all of their “evolution” videos, as this gives a good overview of their progress as a group. Evo. of Music was spring 2013. Next was Evo. of Beyoncé in fall 2013, Evo. of Michael Jackson in 2015, Evo. of Rihanna in 2018, and Evo. of Ariana Grande in 2019. Also their 3 Grammy winning songs: Daft Punk (both music video & live performance) 2015, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy 2016, & Jolene Ft. Dolly Parton 2017.

It's strange seeing this video compared to their Evolution of Ariana which is their newest evolution as it shows how much they've evolved. Mitch's (the high tenor) voice has become higher and higher as the years have gone on with Kirstin sometimes singing alto and him soprano in their arrangements. Meanwhile, Kirstin's voice has developed a great lower range which is my personal favourite of hers. Great reaction and analysis!

So fun! They skipped the earliest stuff because they wanted to get to the eras of music that most of us are familiar with. Mainly from the 60s onward to today.

Hello! 🙂 Their names: *Upper row (from left to right):* Mitch Grassi = countertenor Scott Hoying = baritone Kirstin Maldonado = mezzosoprano *Lower row (from left to right):* Avi Kaplan* = bass Kevin Olusola = beatboxer My suggestions (just a few...): "Evolution of Michael Jackson" - "Silent Night" - "The Sound of Silence" - "Say Something" * Avi left the group at the end of 2017 for personal reasons. Their new bass is Matt Sallee.

Avi is amazing in PTX’s version of Elvis’s Can’t Help Falling In Love! Just the last chord; it’s an A9 and Avi sings a pedal tone-a third ledger line bass clef A, the overtones create a Sound much like an organ. Oh, and Mitch is a counter-tenor!

💛The 3 members in the back Mitch, Scott and Kirstie are literally childhood friends from Arlington Texas.. In high school they formed The Trio ...They have all been singing all their lives... Scott contacted Kirstie and Mitch to join him on the Sing Off they needed a bass and a Beatboxer to make their sound fuller...Scott was introduced to Avi while attending college in California..(Avi is from N. California) Scott was told about a cello/Beatboxer on You Tube...that's how they found Kevin (he is from Kentucky) Kevin was in Yale studying Pre-Med and is fluent in Chinese....The trio jelled SO WELL with Kevin and Avi thus PENTATONIX was born in 2011 ( Scott named the group) ....THERE are other ACAPELLA groups but PTX IS KING!!!⭐

Scott Hoying is the tall baritone that has a tremendous range and a warm, rich voice. Mitch Grassi is the high tenor with an amazing sweet high range but with a surprisingly warm tone in his lower register. Kirsten Maldonado is a gifted singer who can go from a sensuous contralto to a sweet (and powerful) soprano. Avi Kaplan is a true basso profundo and his mastery of his voice and vocal training and technique shows in every performance. Sadly, Avi left the group in 2017 due to the rigors of travel and separation from his family and was replaced by another talented bass named Matt Sallee. And then there is Kevin Olusola...KO is a master beat boxer, a singer with a clear, smooth tenor range, a performance-level cellist and just plain crazy talented. Please check out their performance of Hallelujahm - their official video is stunning (442 million views and counting) but they are equally stunning in live performances that are also available online. Agree with Daft Punk recommendation, also a stunning Bohemian Rhapsody, their cover of Say Something, Havana...pretty much any cover. Also check out Scott and Mitch recording as Superfruit and individual channels for KO and Kirstie. Thanks so much for taking the time!

Scott (top center) and Mitch(top left) have their own channel SUPERFRUIT where they do all kinds of things. In one of their videos they discussed some things about this video, including the fact that they went through the earlier music really quickly, and one thing that was mentioned was that with the advent of the microphone the number of musical genres exploded exponentially, while there was a lot of music before, starting in the early 1900's music went through more changes than ever before, and as this is an evolution of music compilation, the focus isn't on a particular genre and more the periods of time when there were large changes in the way music was sung, expressed, recorded, etc. I do think they could have spent a little longer before getting to the 1900's, but it's still a great video.

There's actually an addendum where they apologize for skipping artists because of time constraints. But these are Millenials, and because they are an a capella group they are going to arrange the songs that speak to them. Scott - tall, blonde and baritone Mitch - the counter tenor Kirstie - You can guess Kevin - beat box. He also is a classically trained cellist. Avi - bass and classically trained opera singer, left the group 2 years ago You've only scratched the surface with these guys. It's rare to see real musical magic anymore and they have it.

Great reaction video and I am really excited to see a vocal coach reacting to Pentatonix. They are one of the most incredible combinations of talent in the world today, IMO. Every one of them is a fantastic singer and performer in their own right and it is remarkable that they all came together in one group. Suggestions for more reaction videos - Say Something, Hallelujah, Shallow, Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary Did You Know. But you can throw a dart at their song list and anything it lands on will be an incredible experience. I am subscribing in the hope that you do many more PTX reactions.

can I request you look at 4 sisters from the Philippines called 4th Impact . They are 4 sisters with amazing harmonies. They auditioned for X Factor UK in 2015 and their audition is approaching 139 million views on you tube. They recently released a cover of Imagine ( John Lennon) in the style of Pentatonix and they recently covered Bohemian Rhapsody ----yes 4 girls sing that iconic song.

I think this was a challenge that was going around at the time and it had to be done under four minutes and since PTX are really focused on modern music, it makes sense they would pay more attention to it. This is an older video, so as a comparison, I would like to see you react to one of their newer "Evolutions", like Rihanna or Ariana Grande. They have a different bass now, Matt, but the rest of them are the same and it would be interesting to see you react to where they are now :).

Love your reaction, looking forward to more PTX reactions! Anything you choose would be great. I love PTX Thrift Shop, PTX Imagine and PTX Can't Sleep Love (an original). The wonderful bass in this video is Avi Kaplan, who studied opera performance & composition in college, and who left the group in 2017 after 6 years to slow down and do his own music. He did an amazing duet with Peter Hollens called "Black is the Color", which I think you might enjoy. The new bass, Matt Sallee, is in their mpre recent videos. Check out PTX Making Christmas or PTX Sound of Silence to hear more from him.

With only a few minutes to cover the history of music some eras necessarily get skipped. For instance they left out the Beatles who dominated a whole generation of time. You mention how tight they are. Their whole career is this way. It's impressive how perfectly in-sync they are, never missing a beat. Watch their version of "Gold" to see how even very fast paced, they come together without a hiccup. If you're new to Pentatonix you're going to love their Christmas songs. "Mary Did You Know" is their best. Mitch (the high tenor) carries a note that leaves me gasping for air.

The video is not meant to be all inclusive instructional. It's entertainment. Of course they skipped A LOT of music genres in a clip less than 4 minutes long. In the mean time what they did hit was done pretty darned well.

Theres no way that even these musical magicians could fit every major song or style from 1500s. I think they focused on what the masses know. Like with Opera, not everyone's thing. So they did a few of what is more well known and got to the 20th century asap. It's about reaching a broad audience rather than a select few that has studied music in college so knows more historic music. The regular Joe probably wouldn't and thats who their targeting to get more people appreciating music

can't believe your criticism includes knocking them for an incomplete music history... i don't think that was the intent... if my memory is correct, it took two years to cover music history in college... i would be interested in hearing covering Debussy, but they know their audience, so that probably will never be done... Voctave on the other hand, might do some instrumental repertoire or an aria or two...
