I was gonna say the same thing. This is the closesr Ive ever seen Sam to "angry" and thats only because of the lack of passion in Adam's performance. It highlights Sam's passion really, there's a few people who only truly get angry at those who dont care/give their all in a given situation ans Sam seems to be that kind of person

I initially thought Adam had issues with his in ear monitors but usually someone would pull them out if that was the case. My speculation is that his voice was hanging lower than normal and couldn’t sit on his bridge like he normally does. The same thing happens with train. Both of them write their songs to sit on the top end of their voice and so they have no cushion for the range fluctuations that happen to anybody and everyone

dropping keys is a thing though
@brianthrom6858
@brianthrom6858 6 жыл бұрын
Ictus Dropping keys comes with its own problems especially if you’re used to a certain key. First your sense of center is off because part of you wants to sing in the original key but you’re trying to match the new key. Second you will not get the same color from your voice because you’re in a different part of it. Third it will shift which notes are above and below your bridge and so you won’t know how to navigate it in the song (ie, a note that normally is flipped could fall directly on the bridge so do you flip, mix or full voice it)

I was a big Maroon 5 fan back in the day - and clearly they’ve had a lot of hits, the only thing that I can see even marginally justifying them to even grace the halftime show stage (albeit being like 15th choice and all the reasons that other artists declined). Adam Levine and his ginormous ego are off-putting, Maroon 5 has lacked the heart I loved so much long ago in exchange for the cashgrab I’ve seen them become. Boring is the exact word to describe this performance. No thank u next.

I enjoyed the Songs About Jane album; it was a pretty solid slice of blue-eyed soul. The only track of theirs I've liked since then was "Moves Like Jagger" (mostly because I dig Christina Aguilera's industrial-strength pipes). But Maroon 5 haven't had a record as good as SAJ in years, and they absolutely butchered "This Love" during the Halftime show. I honestly can shrug off Adam Levine having a massive ego (plenty of musicians do, and still put on awesome performances). But it's been years since he actually gave a damn about making REAL music, and that's the actual shame of it all.

I don't know about nerves... not from Adam Levine. He knows how to handle them. I have a feeling he just wasn't having a good day, for whatever reason, and totally lost interest. I think for lots of aspiring musicians, it's important to note that it's not all about how things sound. The attitude, stage presence, and emotion are all really crucial parts of a good performance and none of those have to do with sound. Great video Sam! I love hearing your insight on things. I've loved Maroon 5 since 2003 and have been to 3 of their concerts. First one was in 2006 and was INCREDIBLE. Not just saying that, it really was an amazing show (and yeah, he took off his shirt then too lol). I was at their concert where they performed at the Hollywood Bowl for the first time and it wasn't as hyped as the first concert, but it was still a great show (I believe it was 2012). As much as I love them, I noticed it was around this time that things just started going downhill and fast. I really dislike most of their music in the past 7 years or so, which makes me really sad. This 'performance' - forget it, I don't even know WTF is happening. But Sam is spot on - i think he might have just been disengaged with all the drama leading up to it (but that's no excuse). Sorry for the novel, but I just wanted to say that he used to be an incredible live performer, but has really disappointed a lot of his fan base for a while now.

Let me say this, though - I went to a M5 concert not too long ago and it was very underwhelming. They played the set and that was it; very little engagement, not really talking to the audience, etc. I feel like their time has passed, maybe? Like they've been doing it for so long, they don't really care anymore. Idk, after that show, to me this is very expected. (At least he was on pitch in the one I went to haha)

Vocal critiques aside, I felt really bad for him, like he let the nerves get the better of him and get his vocal performance off to a bad start. It makes me really sad how harsh some people are being on him. There's not a performer in the world who hasn't had at least one absolute train wreck of a show, so I hope we as fans and musicians can remember those times in our own lives and respond with empathy instead of hate.

I kind of agree, but these artists have months to plan for this moment. This is probably the biggest show of their careers. It just kind of felt like a normal concert and something not stadium-sized.
@Rebecca78239
@Rebecca78239 6 жыл бұрын
@@ChaoticComrade actually in this case he had much less time than that. The NFL had difficulty finding anyone because of the whole controversy, which is a whole can of worms that Maroon 5 maybe shouldn't have gotten involved with, although that's a whole other conversation. They officially agreed in December, maybe 8 weeks out from the performance date. And as far as I can tell the other performers were finalized maybe 3 or 4 weeks before the show. That's an insanely short time to throw together something on this scale, which is probably why it all looks so awkward and uncoordinated.

Cute, you're making excuses for him. Johnson said he's been making music since '03? It's 2019. You do the math, and if he's still nervous about performing his own songs after all this time, he needs to just stop and find a new career path. It was barely a good run, while it lasted.

@@girlisstrange lmao what? he should quit if he's still nervous? i don't think he is nervous here personally, i think he just wasn't engaged at all, but regardless most of the time he performs pretty well so even if this was a case of nerves... how in the world would that justify quitting? hell, even if he WASN'T a successful artist since when does being nervous about something give reason to quit? that's the lamest fucking advice ever. no one would do anything

The genuine frustration and confusion, coupled with the sarcasm, was very entertaining. Almost as if he knew it would be bad but said "F*ck it, I'm just going to end this ASAP" and just ran with whatever happened throughout the rest of the performance. I just felt pity for him and his band, especially with the controversy (which I found out after I watched this since I was curious) since I love M5 and I've seen many of their performances and knew something was wrong the moment he started singing (I'm no expert but I'm used to seeing how he is in good performances compared to the bad one's). I feel that it's a bit unfair but at the same time I've seen rushed performances of other artists that turn out better than expected so I may be wrong and he was just having a bad day. I don't know but I appreciate the analysis since you did this regardless of your initial sentiment of wanting to see this in the first place.

Prince remains the golden standard for halftime shows. The rain, the energy, his defiance of the weather, and how it was so obvious that all that mattered was to give the audience a great show to remember, all came together into perfection. Yes, I miss Prince. Sue me. :p

They get Big Boi on there for not even half of one song! Like you said, it's Atlanta, just have Outkast do the whole show. Outkast even has songs with clean lyrics that they could do with no edits, and some with minimal edits.

Yes! Sam i totally agree. I love how you so badly want to rip the performance apart but are professional and don't want to do anything that would make your viewers afraid to sing out of fear of someone ripping their voice apart. I admire you so much for that! My 13 yr old loves to sing but is shy and too unsure of herself to really let lose. You're the best vocal coach I've ever seen that is above tearing down how someone sings to purposely hurt them hoping by doing so it will some how make them magically sing better.... I'm trying so hard to get her comfortable enough for me to enroll her in your classes... I think thats what happens when you're a cocky jerk who cant be bothered to be excited to be there. And is so use to everyone blowing smoke up their ass that they think nips and tats is enough to entertain millions... ... idk this was as bad as Coldplays halftime show and i didnt think anything could be worse than coldplay haha and i actually love Maroon 5s old stuff, especially harder and harder to breathe and Sunday Morning... why they decided to eff up the entire Spongebob thing is beyond me, its like they didnt care and didnt plan their performance at all..... I dont get it, if anyone watches Lady Gaga 5 foot 2 youll see how meticulous she was about her halftime performance. Down to the lining of her jacket, to material on her belt etc she went over every tiny detail over and over until it was perfect as possible. I RLY WISH THEY WOULDN'T HAVE TREATED PINK LIKE A POS and drag out negotiations for months and acted like she wasn't worth their time because Pink would make one hellaciously awesome performance. Can you imagine how big she would make it and the stunts shed pull off? !?! Pink is one of the best performers of all time, even if you don't like her music you like her performances. They're entertaining, you never get bored, she busts her ass and you can tell. I rly rly rly hope they grovel on their knees apologizing and can convince her to do it next year.... That woman can sing like a gaggle of angels and she does so by swinging upside down on a silk scarf 200 ft above the ground... i cant even walk and sing 😑.... or hell i cant even sing to begin with haha Anyone else want Pink to finally perform a super bowl halftime show or just me??? Lol Idk what it is, maybe its be cause im 31 now and am just an old, un-hip, old hag lady ha ha but I haven't liked a halftime show (besides lady gagas) in probably a decade. They use to be AMAZING and then Janet Jackson's nipple came through hard and everyone lost their minds. Im still pissed that everyone threw a fit and banned her from even attending a game much less performing but didn't do the same to Justin Timberlake AND LETS BE REAL, no one saw her damn nipple because those of us with our nips pierced know what a nipple shield is and its just that, a shield to cover 99% of your nipple and usually 100% of your areola..... You couldn't see her nipple and even if you could it was for a split second.... lil kim showed more with her nipple pasty.... what rly grinds my gears and flicks my nips is that thry now require EVERY FEMALE to wear nipple pasties (keep in mind nipple shields are basically metal pasties) before they can even walk on stage AND THEY HAVE TO SHOW 200 DIFFERENT PPL to prove they're wearing them.... so they ban janet jackson for life and spend months talking about it on a daily basis for showing her nipple shield and then make female performers, dancers, back up singers etc Show their nipple shield/pasties😒😤😥.......sounds logical...... But how funny would it have been if Adam had nipple pasties on when he took his shirt off?? Haha that might have made the entire performance a tiny more entertaining a d enjoyable

It's reassuring to hear that being imperfect but engaged and invested is much better than being boring. I know I've fallen into the trap of being boring with my singing because that feels safer than maybe making a mistake. And it was nice to see you react even though it was obvious you genuinely did not enjoy it.

It's almost like...a live trashy xfactor show. Even the camera techniques and the whole production seems below par. I don't think Adam Levine was even in it - I totally agree with you. I was in the stadium for this - shoutout to section 323 - and in real time, we said pretty much everything you did here. We were all chatting among ourselves within about a minute and a half, completely disengaged. The Benz is notorious for sound issues with concerts because of its size, but I call BS because Chloe x Halle absolutely SLAYED “America the Beautiful” and Ms. Gladys gave us an amazing national anthem. Hell, we in row 15 hit the original high note in “She Will Be Loved.” They also gave no explanation as to the Spongebob thing, and Travis Scott and Big Boi being shoehorned in because we all side-eyed Maroon 5 being selected in the first place was just irritating beyond the telling of it. You have a problem when the logistical setup of the halftime show is way more interesting than the show itself. Anyway, thanks for putting yourself through this. I’m not a singer in the slightest, but really enjoy the way you educate as well as entertain. It opens up a world I would never normally see, and that’s a really cool thing.

The whole performance was disappointing. There were some pretty high expectations, considering how much they were trying to hype up the show. The whole thing seemed VERY unorganized. And who in their right mind tries to incorporate rap, pop, and gospel into one performance? What were they thinking? 🤔🤔

The thing I find hilarious is that Adam literally just told Sebastian Bach that rock music is completely dead and the only innovative thing these days is hip hop, to which the rock community responded with their panties all in a bunch, and then he goes out there trying to be a rock star, whipping his shirt off to display his tattoos and noodling on that pink guitar and fails tremendously. What'd ya think of the omission of Vinnie Paul in the in memoriam at the Grammys? Time for my obligatory request for a Phil Anselmo live performance reaction... how about Jail by Down (live at the BBC Sessions).
