She actually sounded REALLY similar to how she does when she's about to cry or is crying already. Her voice gets a lot thicker than normal and less forward, which is something I think happens to most people. I honestly think she was just tired and really emotional in this performance, which took a little bit from her normal technique, but really not a lot. She still DELIVERED this song!!!

I literally said most of what you said when I first saw this performance. I don’t coach professionally although I do light work with my alma maters gospel choir. I trained on and off (classically) throughout high school and then some more when I was a vocal performance major my freshman and part of my sophomore year of college. I could tell that she sounded tired. She’s doing a lot of singing and recording as of late, and also just going through a lot in general, which can be hard on the body and in turn the voice. The word that stood out that you used was “compensate” because that’s what her body was doing. I noted her adjustments as well to sort of push through it all. All in all, she’s a professional and held it together quite well. She still sounded amazing and I think people who may not have the same ear for those technical nuances just jammed like it was a normal performance with her killin it as she usually does. I love her so much, and I appreciate your videos and insight.

Super In-Depth Analysis! your videos really go into depth in ways that only a super capable vocal coach could. I think a lot of that "not feeling well" & "tension" might have to do with Mac Miller's passing, the fallout with pete davidson & maybe even the colder, winter weather bringing her down in a seasonal-affective type of way. slight issues with technique happen even to the best of singers, as you said! to the general public, Ariana still sounds Angelic!

Oh my god! What you said about vocal therapy was so interesting, I had no idea the body was so, err, smart? I mean, I'm forever amazed by our bodies' ability to self-heal and I would love for medical research to dig deeper into this. I've read some similar stuff (but it was more about viruses) that shows that we could trigger the body's natural healing process like antibodies and stuff, which would make for less medication, thus less risk of getting accustomed to the medication, which would make the medication more effective when it is actually needed. Pretty interesting stuff which I never thought I'd be discussing under a voice analysis video. That's why I love you, Sam Johnson.

It just doesn't add up . Watch anyone whistling and they'll be perfectly still and the only thing that moves is their hands and mouth lol . Seems more like she feels awkward lipsyncing to it so she moves her body around.

It's so refreshing to hear someone speak so openly and honestly about a famous person. You were so fair and professional. A lot of people just say nice things because they don't want to upset anyone or they're not so well trained in the field and are easily impressed. I like that you didn't have an overreaction to her whistle notes like some others did but appreciated them in a critical and positive way which is what singers and the public need to hear. Great content as always! My favourite vocal coach on youtube. You can tell that you're not just here to give a sensationalized 'reaction' to get people excited for more views :)

Shes very emotional during this performance this song means so much to her and its obviously tough for her to sing it live. Not technically but emotionally. Thats why her singing sounds pushed back and not what were used to hearing from her.

I completely agree with that studies results! I've noticed if I overextend one day, and then come back the next, the feeling of my chords coming together is so satisfying and sustainable! You’re such a talented vocal coach and the things you point out are so on point it’s crazy. I’m not a professional at singing technique but I do know Ariana’s voice and to me it sounds like she’s about to burst into tears at any moment. This song is super close to her heart and she seems very emotional singing it so I think that’s the reasons for everything you pointed out. Just a pointer haha, keep up the good work!

Do you believe that whistle tones should be performed every night when an artist is on tour? Some say that if it comes easily to the singer, it shouldn't be a problem, but I feel even then the artist should take a break from them every other night or so.

I don't think there's anything inherently harmful from whistle notes, they can be done in various levels of balance.

I'm not lying. I was a little scared bcuz i thought i have gone to far. So i let it flow out like i am trying to breath out air. Like making a uhh uh uhh. Buh then adding a H to the uhh. Huhh but not with force. I make a soft choking sound. Like I'm getting something stuck in my throat- there's nothing there and constant practice. Not to much. Keeping it low. I practiced with the low whistles done by mariah so that's how i learned to have more control
