I played viola for 8 years and was instantly in love with it over violin because of something unknown to me at the time that just resonated. What would later be known to me in many a reactions like this one of: I love the rich timbre of her voice, ahhh!! Timbre is one music aspect that I have a difficult time explaining to people not well versed in musical lingo but at the same time once you point out two different timbres they KNOW what you are talking about. It is one of those musical things. I am using this clip the next time I need an explanation. As a request: how do you feel about Russian Metal? It would be interesting to know how a voice teacher compares vowels, air, and shape/opening of mouth over different languages. What consistently remains the same technique wise and what changes based on language. Band: Amatory. I have realized over live videos the singer consistently opens his mouth down and wide a lot. Best quality video [LIVE, 1.11.2015, song name Дыши Со Мной]: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHqyY3SOl9-AkJo . However, this next one has less quality in audio but a better side angle and can be used for comparison to give more context [Also Live 2015: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYGqdJ55n9KUgck

She could totally hit the 'just' in 'the mask" rather than head voice if she placed the "rings, ...Some just" right in the face/nose by 'rahngs, sahm 'jah -st' as she approaches 'just'. (she could hum it first to nya or nyum to place it forward to make it ring) The 'just' is really high and its very closed vowel that pushes it down so you have to face it forward by placing your vocal forward before you get there. Alicia hollers that shit! (i worked in a studio where she recorded some songs and I heard her sing face to face (or often down the hallway) Alicia holllers everything. You can hear her singing from outside a soundproof studio!) A perfect song to practise transitioning from chest to head/face is Hallelujah by K-Lang. Its an easy-ish song but really takes you slowly into that tricky transition but it gives you time to 'switch' at the sentence 'well it goes like this' and the word 'this' is where you switch by placing the 'this' in the nose and the rest will just life up behind effortlessly - but if you don't get the 'this' in the right place it will fall back. This song is perfect for a beginner to master that transition.

@@claudemadelienemarie Also a good vocal exercise to get your vocals forward is humming the intro to James Blakes Retrograde. Its the most perfect warm up/vocal exercise. Its like humming a scale but its not too much range or too little - but just enough to warm up the voice and place it all forwards. If you watch him perform it live, he actually sings it with his mouth slightly open (which is suprising coz it sounds like he's doing it with a completely closed mouth) but when you adjust your mouth to open a tiny bit, you feel it ring in the back of your front teeth and the upper lip/nose and if you loop that run over and over (by doing a wide mouth yawn and stretch before you start each loop) itll be nice and easy on your vocal chords - in fact itll feel like you're 'bypassing' your vocal chords altogether and singing 'over' them! (this is how you know you're singing with a really good technique because its effortless and you can get a ton of range and volume with little efforts - its awesome!) At first you might feel dizzy coz it really resonates and rings in your head, but if you can do it daily for a week or so and keep your vocal chords relaxed (by yawning in between each loop and focusing on keeping it light and letting it ring in the front of your face - you can also aid this process by putting your thumbs lightly on the area between your nose and cheekbones and the index finger on your forehead so you are helping yourself to visually see where to place your voice) At first (if you're a newbie or newish) you'll feel the hum in your vocal chords and you can get away from this by very lightly humming notes until you can feel it in the front of your nose - use this note a your 'placement' or 'lampost' to put your voice to remind it where to be. After a while it will go there on its own. But, when learning you have to go through a little bad technique to get to good technique! If you find your sinuses won't allow this sound, a neti poti used a few times a week will help a lot (especially during allergy season!) But when you hit it you will know! But keep it light (don't push volume), let it ring (in back of teeth/nose), maintain relaxed vocal chords (yawning) and eventually it will 'move up' out of your vocal chords and into the nasal cavities.

J NYC I’ve actually been using pocket vox for about a week now so it definitely helped a lot with what you’re talking about (the vid was filmed in September so I’ve had few months to improve). @@claudemadelienemarie Whats a pocket vox? I've never heard of that? Was that you in the video??! You did a really good job (though I think you could def sing something more challenging!) You should check out Kim Burrell I think you could really incorporate her vocal placement into your voice to get some really interesting sounds! She sings 'i look to you' with Whitney..its truly breathtaking! Her tambre is spectacular and theres a beautiful combo of nasal focus AND airy breadth! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYHdpWatgp6Lf7c

J NYC yes, that’s me 😉 pocket vox is a dr vox device designed for vocal therapy and exercise - kind of like straw exercises but you can also do it with mask that allows you to sing whole phrases. Really good for figuring out the right placement and consistent breathing. Thank you, I find Alicia pretty challenging so far but I am really glad you think I can step it up!
