She admitted damaging her voice with drugs and overwork. But I think the raspiness recently is a choice. She sang Midnight Sky with a lot of distortion and covered Take it to the Limit on the same day at the BBC radio 1 but she had no distortion during the cover. She had a tonsillitis and vocal cords surgery last year, she's sober now and had some vocal lessons after the surgery.

I don’t really understand people’s obsession with higher registers and high notes Especially with female singers, that is why I prefer Miley’s sound over other females in the industry its very unique. Also I feel that she sometimes tries to have a similar sound to pop females just to fit in.

MIley always used a little raspy tone during her career but last year she had to go through vocal chords surgery and during 2019 her voice was damaged in a way that even her speech was raspy. Now after the surgery, she learned a healthy technique and if u listen to other songs she sang like my future by Billie Eilish or communication by the cardigans u can see that the rasp is a choice since she's able to sing without it too

I'd listen to it if it was anyone other than Joe Rogan. /: He is a terrible person with a terrible track record to prove it. Honestly, I'm extremely disappointed that Miley Cyrus did an interview with him. You don't have to dig deep to see all of the shady crap he's said, done and the horrible people he's commiserated with on his podcast, including Joey Diaz, who admitted completely to coercing women into giving him oral sex for them to further their careers in Hollywood (Joey and Joe both found it so amusing btw when Joey said one woman said that he 'broke her' mentally). I didn't mean to make this a bash Joe Rogan comment, but I was just reading some stories about him the other day and you reminded me.

@@TheSwauzz dafuq are you going on about? I take it you've never actually listened to any of the full length podcasts? Last person I feel I should have to defend is Joe rogan. Regardless here's an accurate take on him from someone who isn't necessarily a fan of him but a fan of his show. Hes a well meaning knucklehead, at worst. At best he's the closest thing to a Renaissance man you'll ever see. If you believe what someone else tells you about him wholeheartedly without even taking a look at any of the thousands of hours he has recorded you're literally his target demographic. The whole point of his show is to have long form discussions with plenty of context with interesting people, good or ill, and mitigate the destructive nature of click bait news with 5 min spotlights that leads to many people and subjects being taken out of context or misrepresented. The fact you fell for something like that about him means his show is still needed and you are making judgements on something you are ill educated in.

Like you said, in this song she presents a heavier sound but she did some songs on higher notes that I would be curious for you to analyze. She did express in a podcast and other places that her voice has changed over time because ofa mixture of factors such as touring at such a young age and then following eachnight with smoking and then doing it all over again the next day. She stated that before she wasnt properly taught the importance of maintaining the voice because she was making so much money for other people but after her vocal surgery and returning to vocal lessons she decided to give up smoking and drinking and is taking more precautions. I love her voice in all the phases she went through so I hope its here for the long run

That’s the thing about vocal coaches: a lot of the advice can be sound and conducive to the protection of talent longevity. However, style and interpretation can be artistic choices that should not be messed with when the skill set has been honed and proven over many years. We would never have unique, differentiated singers if they always did whatever any given vocal coach advised. There’s technique mentoring and then there’s arbitrary judgment of musical artistry.

I love this original song so much so its so hard to appreciate someone else covering it. I hear some rock, some country and some just affected stuff with Miley that I'm not liking. But, I do really like Mileys rock vibe. I would love it if she went full on rock. Not pop rock but garage band big guitar rock. She has a great voice and presence for it.

During the first verse she was a bit out of breath and you could hear it was affecting her phrasing. Try to imagine how it feels and sounds when you try to speak after running. It's like that. She had probably winded herself after the last song and then gone immediately into this one. Sam is right that you need to breathe when you need to breathe when singing because it's literally impossible to produce sound without airflow behind it. But proper singing includes the ability to control your airflow, it's one of only three things you actually have control over when singing. This is a common reason why artists who have complicated dance routines will use a pre-recorded track for those songs. So that this doesn't happen. It requires incredible stamina to be able to do both simultaneously. But she caught up with herself by the first chorus 😊

Miley's semi broken sincerity voice is perfect for this song as it was for "Jolene". I'd like to hear her try some other very specific emotional music like "Time After Time" or "You're so Vain" or the like. She blew away "50 ways to leave your lover" on SNL I think. She's also a pretty good actress, loved her as a 60s radical in "Crisis in Six Scenes"

I just watched this the other day and had a chance to see Miley perform on the Verizon big concert for small business. She definitely sounded raspy but her singing voice still sounded great! However when she spoke, I have never heard as much rasp as I heard. I couldn’t figure it out. If it’s still up on the Verizon KZbin or Twitter, I highly recommend checking it out.

You mentioned Miley's rasp and whether it is a choice or a physical change. I was curious about this myself because I noticed her voice has a lot more "girth" if you will with the raspy darkness of her tone quality. I thought It was just maturation but it turns out it was a lot more than that. She did a very interesting interview on Joe Rogan's podcast where she explains this more. Highly recommend. Good conversation. I noticed she's been standing and leaning over more during performances which I guess a lot of rock singers do. My teacher mentioned this is an "anchoring" technique which I wouldn't mind hearing your description and feedback on (how, when and why singers might do this).

@M Mac Hello, Happy Holidays... please don't misunderstand me 😃, Im not particularly a fan of hers... but I like the effort in reviving Rock ( even soft variants of it ) to reintroduce to modern audiences. Maybe it was her decision, maybe a producers decision, dont know, but the musical landscape these days is very narrow and something that is not just urban/reggaeton or electronic music is welcome in my world 😊
