Been a Metallica fan for 38 years now a Miley fan for a week... Wow!!! I think it's the imperfections of this live performance that add emotion and rawness. Especially when you see how emotional James got after hearing what Elton John said about his song writing and what the song meant to Miley. Also it was 8 in the morning for them... I thought it was perfectly imperfect.

The first part of this with James explaining how he was nervous bring this vulnerable song to his badass group, and Miley related how when she did this for the first time at Glastonbury, her marriage was done and divorce was planned, her house was burned to the ground in the California fires while she was filming in Africa so nothing was saved... the only thing she had left in her life was her music, that performance to prove herself, and this song to do it with. Nothing else mattered. Adds a ton of meaning to this.

Even though they've gone digital now like most touring bands seem to be, James was notorious for using a Roland JC-120 for their clean tones for years. So that chorus-y sound is all over everything they do clean. Such a textbook Metallica sound. Also, James played this solo on the record and has always played it live as far as I'm aware. He's a solid lead player in his own right despite being possibly the greatest rhythm guitarist of all time.

Regardless of the version, James has crafted one of the greatest solos in rock history. Short, to the point, and rips your heart out. Thank you Michael.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Michael Palmisano is rocking an I'm-building-a-big-beautiful-barn beard. :) Miley DID crush it. Imagine what it would be like to step up and sing that lead with the dude who has sung that lead standing next to you? Man, her voice cuts through a mix like nothing else I have ever heard. Squirrely is right for Kirk. It's tough to watch the magic leave their hands. I have never seen James take a solo...but, he rocked it harder than Kirk on that one for sure.

Love the honest commentary "kirk, a little squirrely". He's been squirrelly for the past 20 years, right?

miley's voice is different since she got a case of Reinke's edema , which affects the vocal cords, hence her voice is not as clean and pure as it was many years ago, but I like it. she got surgery , but her voice is permanently different... I like her new songs, esp 'Midnight Sky' and "prisoner', though i like some of her older songs with her 'pure' voice, esp 'Slide away' which is an interesting song, esp with the warbling effect/texture voice that permeates the song, and it's a pretty melody

In regards to your question about what other band plays a full volume drum beat to a clean melodic song, check out Acid Bath, 'Scream of the Butterfly'. First time I ever heard double bass drum on an acoustic song! lol

SOAD are masters when it comes to that. They switch so extreme and seamlessly from metal to clean without the songs falling apart.

I understood him as meaning the Lars plays clean tones with full force. Like this song is mostly all clean. but hes still banging on the drums, open hi hat and all. John Dolmayan (SOAD) definitely adjusts his parts to the song
