Would you please do more reaction video of Geoff Castellucci's solo cover songs ? I get so tired of reactors saying how good he is but won't play more of his videos. Same thing with Voice Plays videos. How are they going to get as big a fan base if people won't play their videos ? BTW thank you for a great reaction. Please play more. I as well as Geoff's & Voice Plays fans would be very grateful.

Geoff does have training videos of singing low. Also he can go higher, checkout his solo covers of "High and Dry" (Radiohead) and "Blackbird" (The Beatles) to hear his range, when you get a chance.

Note for future reactions to Geoff: One needs a full keyboard to figure out notes when critiquing Geoff because that man is damn near a full keyboard all by himself! He talks a little about his training in the 'singing low' videos that are also on his channel and there's a really interesting interview with him on the channel Bass Singer Central that you should check out. Some highlights from both: while in his videos he gives techniques for helping you to go lower with your voice he emphasizes that before you start obsessing about how low you can sing, never forget that you first have to put work into the basics of tone, control and pitch. You have to work on being a better singer before you start concentrating on any particular range. In his interview with Bass Singer Central, he'll admit to loving the look of disbelief that happens, particularly with younger audiences, when they first hear him reach a really low note, LOL. But, "keep your high notes" while working on your lower range. I also love that he talks about when, years ago, in the first 'incarnation' of Voiceplay that was called 4:2:Five, one of the group was filming them and handing out critiques that included something along the lines of: "You're singing fine, but man, Geoff, you have the deadest fish eyes while you're doing it." That's something he has obviously worked to correct, LOL. There's also a long interview of him on Elizabeth Zharoff's 'Charismatic Voice' channel (also one of Voiceplay's beatboxer, Layne Stein, doing a deep dive into arranging music for Voiceplay in general and the 'Moana Medley' in particular that is fascinating!)

Geoff's range is B0-A5 He labels his videos either bass singer or low bass singer.. the ones labled low bass singer is where is dose major and more common low notes the bass singer ones he is more likely to have much higher octave lines

I think Geoff's cover of this is so beautiful! I had to listen many times before I could watch the video, I had to close my eyes and just enjoy the music! He just released a new cover on his Patreon, I think it should be out on KZbin in about a week, it usually is a week between Patreon and KZbin and other public channels. It is great! It's very different from this, and the video is hilarious! Geoff has some tutorials on how to sing low on his solo channel, so if you are interested, check them out! They're not only informative, but very fun too!

The river is the Missouri, as referenced in the song. The history of the song goes back to around the Civil War. The story is of a love between Chief Shenandoah's daughter and a soldier. Rather than lose his daughter to the soldier, he finds out when they are going to meet along the banks of the Missouri and run away together. He moves his entire village into the mountains to thwart his daughter's plan, and the song is the plea of the soldier and lament at losing her. Hence the first line of the second verse, "Oh, Shenando, I love your daughter...". That's the backstory which applies to this version, but there are others as well.

Thank you, I was going to write something similar to this. Mid explanation she gave, I was like "no it's about an Indian chiefs daughter" I don't mean to be rude about. The reaction was still pretty dang good.

He definitely do what I love when singers do... sings the note for a loooong while at the end instead of just stopping or dropping it. It kind of resonates in the air. In my mind this shows the difference between vocalists and just a regular singer.

Fun fact about Geoff: before his voice dropped through the ocean's floor, he was training and aiming to be a rock tenor. There seems to be quite a few professional basses who sung tenor when they were younger, like Tim Foust and, of course, the legendary Gospel bass Gene McDonald who can now sing down to a bone-rumbling F1 in his chest voice 😄

It is great to hear him sing in all his range but that's what he does. And his harmonies are just so beautiful. Glad you enjoyed it. His latest ofering - due out shortly - is hilarious and totally different to this one. If you haven't yet heard Sam Ryder, who was the Biritish entry in the Eurovision Song Contest this year, you need to. He had the most amazing voice and personality. He had done acoutic recordings of his own songs: Tiny Riot, More, and some others I think, but compilations of his Tik Tok clips are just as entertaining.

I have noticed that many of Geoff’s solo works have the roots in that area, probably because he was born in Virginia and lived there until he was about eight. But he’s done 16 Tons, Country Roads, big bad John, all of which have some sort of connection to that region. I had to laugh when I heard you say you loved the upright piano. He of course pre-recorded everything and then is redoing it for the video. (Generally he doesn’t lip-synch he does sing just at not the full volume.) But for the piano portions he had to play. But in his behind the scenes on his Patreon page he showed us that it was a half note off. So while he was listening to his recorded playing (so that he could coordinate the timing) he was playing that piano and it sounded horrible. He did show us and the look on his face was truly pained. (I believe this is the same piano that he’s had in his personal storage unit up until recently when they finally got rid of it. It’s been a thorn in his side ever since he saw it.) He has such a smooth quality to his voice but it’s really shown off in these slower songs. But then… He had just released one on his Patreon page that it couldn’t be more different. And it might actually knock Misty Mountains Cold off my favorites spot at least for a while. And his clones only sing a little but they add so much! to the video. Even if you don’t review it I strongly recommend you watch it when it comes out. It was a totally different side to him.

I have a question for you, Lauren. I know from my piano lessons (probably before you were born!) that playing a note and ending it sharply is called staccato. In this arrangement, shortly after the key change that you pointed out, the two Geoffs on the right sing “your rolling ri-ver” with a break between syllables. He’s done the same thing in at least one or two other songs. Is that still called staccato, or is there’s different term for it when it’s done in singing? Thanks!

Just little history. This song is actually about an Indian chief that was named Shenandoah and not even about the Shenandoah Valley as the Missouri River does not reach there. So more likely to be in Missouri itself. Watch Peter Barber's reaction to this song. I belive he goes over that in his reaction.

That piano was out of tune by like half a step so he had to play it correcting for that which he said was somewhat frustrating.

Lol what? The entire piano was off by half a step? So like every note, and all three strings on every note? (on those that have three string, don't @ me) If so then that must obviously have been intentional for some reason. I've never heard of that happening although I could see some weird contemporary artists do that for their own inscrutable reasons. But then couldn't he still have gotten someone to tune it correctly? That story just sounds off xD

@@krystofdayne yeh, the whole piano was off by half a step. he just borrowed it for the making of the video, he recorded the audio with his own equipment. but he had to play it for the video, and you can just imagine how horrible it sounded playing that thing against the audio recording he was playing along to, as he had to play it as if it wasn't off a half step for the sake of the video 😅
