the high note is supposed to raise the hackles on the back of your neck- vibrato lessens that as it is "pretty" sounding, and a sweetly hit note would lessen the hackle-raising effect, ergo the slightly "off" or discordant choice; if you've heard the original song then you'll be aware of how harsh he sings the note, and morgan's purposely shrill and unvibratoed note is an homage to that.

Excellent breakdown. With regard to the 'straight tone' - the band arrangement is oscillating between two pitches during that stretch. It has the effect of simulating a vocal vibrato. If she had chosen to go with a vibrato, I feel it would have conflicted with the band arrangement. My adopting the straight tone, she provided a contrast to the instruments which made her choice stand out.

Her tone is consistent. It is the choral movement as she holds the note that is creating the thought that her pitch is changing. I thought the same thing to I listened closely.
@bradsouthers74763 жыл бұрын
My opinion is that the slight flat is intentional to add just a tiny bit of dissonance. A perfectly on tune note there would be boring - something that autotune addicts just don't understand. Vibrato is just a pre-technology way to hide imperfections, which is another reason I believe the dissonance is intentional... if she was having trouble hitting a perfect note she would have just vibrato'd her way through it instead of sticking with straight tone. Sometimes perfection is because of imperfections.

Great analysis!
@Bobbias3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the flat note near the start is actually interesting. She lands on the note, and then dips flat, then the vibrato comes in.. And since she's still so close to the right pitch it really just adds color rather than sounds put of place, at least to my ear. I'd say it's similar to how you get different colors for intervals in different tunings, but even more subtle.

Morgan James is an absolute monster vocalist, with incredible technique, tone, phrasing and style. On her last extended note when she's using her head voice/falsetto with no vibrato, her pitch sounded dead on to me and to me, her first extended note that you said was flat was possibly slightly flat initially, but she corrected the pitch and some of the changing chords during the long note could be creating tension due to the interval between the chord tone and her vocal note which could also give an illusion that her pitch is off.
@tgszw3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a singer. I don't have a passion to be one either, but I love your technical analyses. However, the thing I love the most is your impartiality. You could listen to a person singing at home on TikTok and point out something they are doing that is technically better than some professional singers, however rare that may be. I love this performance by Morgan James, but a case in point at 7:22 - 7:25 is that she may have been struggling to maintain the pitch. I consciously dismissed that, due in some part to her professional status, even though my untrained ear still picked it up. I have a personal preference for straight tones. An example is Alisa Supronova performing "My String". She includes two instances of long straight tone phrases with vibrato at the ends. It's far from perfect, but I still love her performance. Some future suggestions for your channel: Postmodern Jukebox ft. When you look at a painting, do you worry that the wrong brush was used for a given stroke? Art is not about rules. It's not about preferences. It's meant to be seen as a whole. Craft on the other hand may in-fact give importance to the pieces, parts and personal preferences. Someone who has mastered their craft has poetic license to do as they please to create their art.
