Ah. There it is. ❤️ What’s the old saying, she could sing the phone book and it would be amazing? Well, we don’t really have phone books anymore. But I could listen to Morgan James sing anything. Add in the PMJ arrangements and instrumentalists and it’s perfection. She’s incredible. Great reaction. You called attention to her diction or enunciation. I heard her in an interview talk about her commitment to the lyric. She puts so much value on the lyric first and it sure shows. Interesting fact. She applied to Juilliard and did well at her audition, with more than one call back. In the end, she was waitlisted. Her parents encouraged her to go with her next choice, but she felt she belonged at Juilliard. So wrote to them and said she felt they made a mistake. They agreed and decided that year to add one more spot.

I watch PMJ/Morgan James Dream On reactions/reviews frequently because I love watching people's expressions and knowing exactly how they are feeling. For me it's almost like hearing it for the first time again. Almost. It's not unlike chasing that first time high by doing drugs over and over again. Or so I understand. I've never done drugs. But over the years, I've discovered that my favorite reactions have been by vocal coaches like you. I know nothing about music but I do know what I like. 12:20 the skill I most respect is the pause and down tone to plaintive from full wail or belt. The audience is shifted emotions without warning, and are amazed by their own feelings. I honestly feel I didn't fully hear the poetically perfect lyrics to this great rock song, until this version. That is to say, I didn't feel them. In this respect it's similar to Disturbed's Sound of Silence.

Morgan and her husband(guitarist) gave a series of pandemic concerts from the NYC apartment--she sings blues very well indeed. I think a good example of Morgan's control, vocal agility and emotional connection to a lyric happens when she sings Joni Mitchell songs (her cover of the whole album "Blue" by Mitchell is on YT). Morgans version of "River" is very good. You can find it on YT at: "River - Joni Mitchell (Morgan James cover)"

In interviews, Morgan has indicated that she's very fussy about enunciation, that she wants people to be able to actually understand the words she's singing. I've seen a few reactors criticize her choice to sing that first belt straight instead of with a vibrato. Nobody else has explained it, and I thank you for that! Personally, I've always thought it a great choice.

@@JenniferGlatzhofer - I don't know if you picked up on this like I did, but this arrangement is in a different time signature than Aerosmith's original. There's is in 4/4, but Scott has rearranged this version in 6/8 - take another listen and you'll see what I mean. Others have noted her excellent breath control, and starting at 6:05 "maybe tomorrow" is a perfect example as she sings thru that entire phrase without taking a breath. Just friggin' amazing. I have actually had the opportunity to meet her after a show - she's very humble, polite, and hysterically funny! Go to her channel and watch some of the "Peggy" videos to see what I mean. Oh, and btw, she's also 5'2" and if she weighs 110 lbs dripping wet out of the shower, I'd be surprised - especially with such a big voice. Great reaction, Jennifer, keep 'em coming!

Check out more of her covers: (w/pmj) take me to church, barbie girl, maps, and especially all about that bass (w/hailey reinhart and arianna savalas). (Non-pmj): dear prudence (w/hailey), sledgehammer, quarantunes vol 1 & 2, white album (beatles covers), call my name (prince cover), and bring it on home to me. There are plenty more.

I really appreciate the way you explain what is going on...i can sing but i dont know how it happens. What are the chances of getting you to react to "Nutshell" by Alice in Chains...the unplugged live "Nutshell" from the mtv unplugged series is the one to get...Layne Staley and AIC were one of Grunge Musics biggest bands in the 90s, AIC also has a recording called Jar of Flies...not quite a record some said but we would practice absolute silence for the duration of the album...my friend was an AIC Freak. ok ok one for the road "Long Gone Day" is a song for the netflix and chill "smooth operator"...Sade Vibe and such.

She was wait listed and then rejected by Julliard but, she kept at it and finally convinced the Head of Admissions to allow her in as a seventh vocalist where they normally only take six. It is interesting that she went to Julliard for opera and while there she took a masterclass for Broadway musicals. Once she graduated, she went on to musical theater. She has a brilliant cover of Prince's "Call my name" on her second album. She also has entire cover albums of Nina Simone's music, Joni Mitchell's Blue album and The Beatles "White Album". She eventually wanted to go in other directions creatively and created her own record label.

Great reaction and analysis Jennifer. You mentioned how belting is a style, does that mean that one could teach themself to belt in there head voice, or for the opposite end of their range, in the lower notes of their chest voice?
@JenniferGlatzhofer2 жыл бұрын
So a belt style can typically start just before we enter our first passage. To belt we need to have chest voice connection too, so as we belt higher, the head voice will be included and we begin using our mix voice 😊 hope that makes sense!

first off... your the spitin image of "officer kim burgess"... except she does not have the cool accent. otherwise, nice reaction. morgan james is an amazing singer and performer and fits perfectly with the postmodern jukebox family. she is very different than my favorite haley reinhart but exceptional in her own way. she quickly makes herself known with that intro belt in "all about the bass". however, this performance takes her to another level and is her best one... imho. the string arrangement is also superb. the way the guy on the cello plucks it like a guitar after her first run is super cool (never seen that before).

This woman has a very good voice. You can tell she has had years of training. In a sense, I think she used too many colors. She oversang it. Had she toned it down and simplified it, it would have a had a larger impact........for example....Disturbeds cover of Sound of Silence, The Warnings(Pau) cover of Creep, and Angelina Jordans cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. All 3 could have done more......but ended up with perfect renditions. Simple usually wins out.
@crhu3192 жыл бұрын
I think the colour is to differentiate from the original which is much as you say, a stripped down simpler sound. Over time as she performs it live she will focus on what the audience responds most to. Even Freddy Mercury learned from his audience.
