J None was stationed in Seattle and was transferred to Wash DC. So he has been doing more with Voiceplay. Loved the reaction guys !

I'm pretty sure someone OUGHT to have told you before, but I cannot actually remember it. J None was once a member of VoicePlay until he left for the Navy. ANYWAYS he is considered 'featured' because he isn't there for every month - only when he has leave. Pretty sure many of us will squeal as soon as he is no longer listed as 'featured' as we will then assume he has rejoined them. One of the most amazing things about J's high notes here? He sings BASS for the US Navy. And I don't think you caught it but Cesar was the one doing those super high whistle notes at the end. Highest he has gotten so far. I think we've been told he hit D6s! And as for a 4-person VP? I can think of at least one - "Eleanor Rigby" and I think (?) "Heart of Life". Both right after Earl left them.

What can be said about Geoff on this: he was running a mic with minimal effects (not even any real compression). This made his notes sound pure and like his real, unprocessed voice. I love hearing Geoff's voice like that... he has such good resonance without the studio tricks. Not to say I don't like their more processed music, though.

I love that this was supposed to be a short when Layne turned it into a full length song. I pray J-None will come back to the group when he leaves the military service. VP brings a smile to my face every time I hear it! Enjoy your reactions. ❤

This, along with their Christmas release, was filmed on an iPhone. Their regular cameraman is not available and they are making do. Originally this was supposed to be a mini but Layne got a little carried away so they ended up making it their release for the month. As others have stated J is in the US Navy where he was recruited as a baritone. However when he transferred to the East Coast they reassigned him as a bass singer. You wouldn’t know it from what he did in this one!! They’ve done most of their minis in this spot since PattyCake Productions moved their studio a few years back. Oviedo Mall had a lot of vacant stores and other businesses started moving in. Layne and Tony took that opportunity to relocate. A few of their minis, especially since J left for the Navy, have been featuring four singers. Two of my favorites: The Tiki Room and YoHo, It’s a Pirates Life For Me include just the four of them. Back when they were doing their part works series, one of my very favorites is only two members! They did Death of a Bachelor with a five part harmony, with only Geoff and Earl! It’s pretty amazing to watch the low bass and the high tenor pull that off, complete with beatboxing! I follow Jennifer Glatzhofer as well. I know nothing about singing but she talks about mouth shapes a lot 😂 so it’s not as weird as you two made it sound! Layne actually learned that water drop sound in seventh grade and he doesn’t think it’s a big deal. He thought everybody knew how to do it! Of course he’s part alien so I don’t know how much that counts.

There’s been all kinds of talk about who should be the fifth member of the group. Personally, for right now I love that they can have a different person every time. When J gets out of the Navy, THEN they can have a permanent fifth. Yes, that was Cesar hitting a D6. D-flipping-6. The highest note written for a soprano in opera is F6. This is two notes down, by a man. Just saying. Great reaction, guys!! And who didn’t want to hear Geoff hitting those wicked subs with a micro monkey on his head?

To be fair to J. The Navy is kinda possessive 🤣 That said a lot of voiceplayers consider J simply being on “long term absence”. We are likely to seem J more now that he is stationed in Washington DC he is only a short flight away.

At different times Earl Elkins left the group for personal reasons and J None left for the navy. Cesar DeLaRosa is the only permanent replacement, leaving them with 4 members. They have several other featured singers coming in for videos: Anthony Gargiula, Omar Cardona, his brother E.J. Cardona, DeeJay Young, Scott Porter, plus a few ladies. As to this videos location, VoicePlay's independent studio is located in this mall. They've done several video in and behind it.

This filmed in the Aviedo Mall just outside of PattyCake Productions. They film many of their minis and shorts in the mall early in the morning before the stores are open.

Cesar with his whistle notes are amazing. He also used his whistle note while playing the air guitar in Hell Fire & live on stage while Voice Play did a number with the band Chicago on stage.

The location where they are standing is directly in front of the Pattycake Productions mall-front. There are walkthrough videos of the Oviedo Mall that show it from the other direction, so that you can see the Pattycake sign, just to the left of the orange sign over the adjacent store seen on the left side of the video here. Their *old* version of this same song, was done with just four guys. (Geoff, Layne, Earl, and I think the fourth guy might've been James May, not really sure.) More recently, some of the videos in the Partwork series are done with only a subset of the group. I think a professional orchestral upright bass can hit those low notes, using something called an "extension". There's also a thing called an "octobass" that can go an octave lower, which is pushing pretty hard against the lower limit on the human hearing range..

Eleanor rigby is just the four -Geoff Layne Eli and J-None when he was a full member. I guess it all just depends on when he finishes up his duties with the US Navy. Also “Heart in a life” 😭 is the same four. I’m pretty sure they were both done after Earl left the group.

They create a karaoke version for the patrons, what they usually play at the end while the patron list rolls is that track. I love listening to the no lead version! And sometimes you will catch Geoff "playing" the bass. So much fun. Did you catch Cesar doing that super high line? He was up to a D6!! Anyways, great reaction!!

VoicePlay were alwaays a five piece but Earl left in 2020 and J.None left in 2021 to sing with the navy. Cesar joined after J left. J returns when on leave to sing with his old mates again. Geoff is a great bass guitar but he goes down to cello, in my opinion. His range is now A0 to A#5. :) This is VoicePlay having so much fun. That dancing! They're the best. You'e probably enjoy seeing how they do a loop of Return to Sender. Totally off the cuff. :)

J None was a permanent member 'til 2021, when he was recruited by the Navy to sing with them. And BTW, in the Navy choir he sings BASS. Just saying. 😁 He still records with the friends when he's on leave, and my personal feeling is that they still consider him part of the family (and righteously so). And many of us, me included, all be incredibly happy if, once he's done with the Navy, he comes back as a permanent member. 😇 I'm so happy that you underlined some details, like the tongue movements, and how Geoff is almost indistinguishable from a real 5-strings bass... There are so many different things that happen in the background, and it's so smooth and flawless it's even difficult to notice. One has to remember all the time to pay attention to it or it will be "under the radar" and go unperceived. 🙂 I loved your reaction. You have a knack for giving a lot of interesting information and pointing out a lot of interesting stuff while keeping it funny and lighthearted. Can't wait for your next one. 🙂 BTW, Geoff releases his new one today, and when I saw what it was going to be I couldn't imagine how it would end up being. Now I listened to the audio-only version and I got so curious about the video... Even if I can't take Tenacious D's version off my eyes 😁😅. See you guys next time!

"Heart of Life" after Earl left has just the four remaining members. Also some of their minis and the barbershop style minis also just have the four members.Those Oreos will be perfect for VP's next release! Gonna have to get some for the premiere...obviously end of video club.

Heart Of Life and Elenor Rigby are their two full-length videos with just 4 of them, and both were when Earl had left, but they still had J None, not Cesar. Also Eli does 2 tenor lines in both of those to cover the sound spectrum.

As VoicePlay, they've always been officially a 5-person group, but due to member changes they've been down to 4 permanent members for a few years now, and using featured artists for the 5th person. Since J. None was a permanent member, but left to enlist in the Navy to sing in one of their choirs (Cesar was his replacement), he's only able to record with them when he's got leave. He was originally stationed on the west coast, which made commuting to Florida difficult, but these days (last I heard) he's stationed in the Washington, D.C. area, so it's a much shorter trip down to FL for videos and shorts. PS - I THINK that note of Geoff's is an F1, but I'm not sure - it's a little difficult to hear it clearly enough to tell for sure. Someone else probably has it figured out already.

They've always had guests from time to time, but it became all the time after Earl and J left. We got Cesar tho, so I can't regret anything. ❤

I've always loved the Tokens rendition of this song and VoicePlay's version is now tied for my favourite (along with Tim Foust's). Apart from Eleanor Rigby, I think several of their minis featured just four of the guys (A Pirate's Life For Me comes to mind and, don't quote me but I believe The Tiki Room?) and I think also some of their Piecework series from a while back.

Obviously J None hasn't been a member since he was recruited into the US Navy Chorus. He was stationed in Seattle and it was hard and expensive to get back to Orlando. Recently he has been promoted to bass and the premier US Navy Chorus in Washington DC which makes it easier to come down to Orlando. He has 2 more yrs and a couple months. I've wondered if the US Navy prohibits a person from having a second job. Does anyone know? When VP got Cesar after Earl left and then J, Cesar can do both the baritone and tenor so VoicePlay has the flexibility to bring on a variety of featured artists. This video started as a mini, but the guys were having so much fun that Layne extended it to full-length. Where they are located in the mall is right outside the door to Pattycake Productions. When they did the mini, Peaches (Super Mario Bros) they set it up in front of GameStop. That was where Geoff got his Bb5 highest note. A little more and he'll have a C6. I've heard Geoff described as a big cat curled up purring inside a cello.

In the past they had 5 members for a good while. Earl Elkins was once with them but left the group and ever since then, they've been 4 with different guests filling that 5th spot. J. None, E.J. Cardona of Voctave, Omar Cardona (E.J.'s younger brother), Sometimes Rachel Potter, etc. It makes for a lot of flexibility in their song selections.

Geoff does “walking bass” frequently. I don’t play bass, but as a guitarist I’ve certainly listened to enough of them. I listen a few times just for funsies, but eventually I will play though and close my eyes to just listen to what he’s doing.

Having 4 voices makes sure that the chords are all full. They could do that with just 4 members, but then they would not have the vocal percussion that Layne is doing.

If you really want to se Geoff do bass guitar for more than 1 measure review "I will survive". Geoff and Layne each play at least 2 instruments, have 5 octave voices and have been friends since jr high.
