Thank you so much for performing & preserving & uploading these interviews for all of us to enjoy & learn from. My grandfather was a WW2 navy vet. I miss this generation of men & women terribly and sadly they’re just about all gone. The honor & stoicism & love they showed us, the unbelievable sacrifices they made for us are truly remarkable and so greatly appreciated by so many. Again I miss this generation, this group of human beings. They were truly the greatest generation and if it’s in the cards for me I cannot wait to see and hug and talk to my grandparents again. So much so that my heart hurts. Thank you so much sir.

Michael, a rare glimpse into the past and a gem of a story. Almost 20 years since I interviewed him in Cincinnati. He and most of my other WWII Veterans are all gone. It's an honorable burden that I carry.

Larry: Iwo was captured in order to have a forward base for the P-51s to provide fighter escort for the B-29s hitting mainland Japan. Also, any shotup B-29s could land there on their way back to their bases at Saipan, Tinian and Guam instead of ditching. The operations to get Iwo was vital for our victory over Japan - without the escort base on Iwo, the war would have lasted much longer and many more thousands of American troops would have been lost. Thank GOD for the USMC and men like Cpl. James Richard Kerin!! Thank you for sharing this great interview. Roy

Yes Roy, I have produced two films on Iwo Jima. We saved more American Airman lives by capturing that pork chop shaped island than Marines who were lost in the 36 day onslaught.

Wow. This was so awesome. Good d Bless Richard and the service men who fought for freedom. My great uncle Carl was in the marines and fought in the pacific theater. It took its toll on him. I only knew him as an older man. Recall we used to go for family picnics. Recall a couple times when planes would pass over head he would scream and get under the picnic table. The only one who could calm him was my great aunt. His sister Marie. He was truly never the same when he came back. Was always a hero to me. As are all these patriots. Larry thank you so much for your videos. You do Gods work sir

Wow what an amazing interview. And an amazing marine. I had a friend when I was a kid who had fought on Iwo Jima he had crawled up near a bunker and threw a grenade in and they threw it back out and he was wounded badly but was able to throw another in and destroy the machine gun bunker and it was key to helping get more people up higher to fight. He took me to my first Major League Baseball game in 1976 ! RIP JOE DUNAGON

The Silver Star Medal is the United States Armed Forces' third-highest military decoration for valor in combat. The Silver Star Medal is awarded primarily to members of the United States Armed Forces for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. I can't imagine being able to have a conversation with someone who has received such high honor for what they have done under fire. Great intereview Larry. This country misses, and needs, men like Mr. Kerin. Mr. Kerin is right, and I want to thank his generation for allowing our freedoms and luxuries we enjoy.

It is amazing Chet, I've done so many interviews, over the years I have almost forgotten about a lot of these stories, and yet I can still remember the home, the room, whether it was sunny or cloudy or rainy outside. I will never forget their sacrifices; hopefully others won't either and a new generation of true Americans will be proud of this documentary series after I am gone.

I consider the most rewarding job I ever had was as a volunteer at the Syracuse V/A. One afternoon I passed in the hallway a veteran in a wheelchair driven by his wife. As I passed him I noticed he wore a cap noted IWO JIMA. I exclaimed "Iwo Jima', he said yep. I turned around got in front of him went down on one knee and placed my hand on his knee, looked into his eyes and said, two times, what you did was important. He started to cry. Like I said this was the most memorable and rewarding 'job I ever had.
