The list of things I was scared of at seventeen and a half would be laughable compared to what he was doing at seventeen and a half. He was a part of a tuff breed. God bless him, and all that he went with.

Another amazing story from the truly greatest generation. These men really sacrificed more than we could ever imagine. The courage it takes to crawl up to a cave you know is filled with a enemy you know is fighting to thr death is astonishing. All these men are heroes in my eyes. We will never forget, I wish they knew how there's still many of us truly love and respect what they sacrificed. God bless.

I wish they knew too my friend. I think somehow from Heaven they do know that we are fighting for them, in this country, against the same enemy they fought against in the respective wars which they served.

@@VoicesofHistory I know they're looking down on us. Least we forget what they sacrificed. Can't let what they fought so hard for go in vein.

Ive heard men say that theyve seen soldiers try to put their things back inside, and its an awful thing. I dont think my words can even convey. Its just an awful thing to think,and imagine. Ive seen that in war pictures,and it is gruesome. Im lucky enough to never have seen these things. I couldnt imagine seeing this in real life. But ill say that i can aporecuate what these men have done in battle,and someone lije me could only imagine what these men have seen,awful atrocities. God bless you all.

War is hell my friend and freedom is never free!! Two common themes in every interview I’ve done the past 22 years. Great to have you with us here. Please help me to share these videos. God bless you!!

Freedom isn't free, and we can see that in Mr. Werner's answers that required he relive battles in his memory. Hopefully this country will pay the cost of freedom in tax dollars to prevent war with massive weapons, rather than with the blood of our troops from spending 'Peace Dividends' on pet projects.

I wanted him to go with me just six months after this interview I did with him in 2005. I went in 2006 with some other Iwo Jima veterans and it was heaven on earth for me. My fourth film documents that return to Iwo Jima if you want to watch it, let me know.

Im curious - Does anyone know what the white substance he tells about that they put on their skin ? I have seen stories about the flame thrower operators had a whitish creme they put on their faces and hands. It was to help to protect them from the heat of the flames.

@VoicesofHistory Ай бұрын
I thought he did mention what the white substance was, maybe I am mistaken. I know one of my veterans has or some of them have. I’ll do some research.

@@VoicesofHistory Thanks for the fast response. I do appreciate it ! I watch your videos all the time. I'm 6 years prior service. 1982-88. I served with my local Army National Guard Field Artillery Unit. 38th Infantry Division - 163rd FA. I love watching these vets tell their stories. What I did doesn't even come close to their bravery and actions. By the end of most of these videos, I have tears in my eyes. And I always salute them back. Thank you so much for recording all this history.
