I was in the ASA in Nha Trang Vietnam. It was an honor to serve in the ASA (I was transferred into the ASA.) Steve is another example of the ASA workers who did his job very well.

As an Old ASA Hand, I laud Steve for coming forward and sharing his story that runs counter to the prevailing narrative! He states the truths that all of us who lost family members, or knew friends or relatives who deployed with the troops, to be correct! Thank YOU, Steve! Please try to shake off the negativity, and welcome yourself home! ASA, all the way..., you ARE my brother....

I was in the army during Vietnam. I was drafted and served at Fort Knox my entire term of service. Sometimes someone will thank me for my service. I’m embarrassed by that. Steve, and those like him, are the real heroes who should be thanked for their service. God bless you, Steve.

Thanks Steve for sharing your history. Our paths crossed several times. I took Basic in D/5/3 at Leonard Wood in Sept 67. I was with the 313th RRBN in Nha Trang RVN Feb15 of 69 (1st day of Tet). I was trained as a Crypto Mec (repairman) but worked as a wheel & track mech. It took almost 20 years for the rage and rejection to erupt into alcoholism. Survived that and mellowed out...life is good!

My father was ASA at Phu Bai from April, 1969 - April, 1970. He didn't talk much about his service there. I learned more about what he did from this video than I ever heard from him in person.

I was in Berlin form 61 to 64, ASA. The most dangerous thing was VD. We had great nco's and offercers. In 64 I was taken for a Helicopter ride, I turned down the offer to fly them in Vietnam. 78ASASOU SPL OP UNIT

From that last picture it looked like he made it to the high school the next day. Maybe the interview helped him to let things go.

The Army Security Agency was not only operational in Vietnam but was a world wide organization that was Headquartered at Arlington Hall Virginia and Fort Meade MD . It operated in countries like South Korea, Turkey, Germany, and other locations during the cold war and during the Vietnam War. It operated mostly in remote locations. It primarily targeted the USSR , the Red Chinese, the Eastern European Communist Block, and North Korea before the Vietnam war. It worked very closely with the NSA. It normally operated under its own independent command structure which made it very unpopular to the regular Army Brass. It was disbanded as I recall in the 1970s when the military cut back. Primarily because it had made a lot of enemies within the army command structure during the cold war years. Some of its work was assigned to Army Intelligence afterwards. There were also US Navy and US Air Force Security Agency components. As I recall, the Army Security Agency used the name Radio Research Group in Vietnam and other places as a cover name. As far as I know they were never able to wear the patch designed for them. ASA units overseas and in the states never wore the ASA patch, sometime they wore other patches as cover. Sometimes they did not wear any patches at all. All members of the Army Security Agency were required to have a top Secret-crypto security clearance.

Thank you for talking about the Army Security Agency. My father was with the ASA in 68-69. He told me he was sitting outside drinking a beer in town or something, and another soldier, could of been an officer, sat next to him. So they are chatting, enjoying the nice weather where all of a sudden the guards started yelling stop to this kid running past them with a shoebox. The other soldier then grabbed my dad by the scruff and pulled down. The guards shot their 50 cal. and chopped the kid in half. When they opened the shoebox, it was full of dynamite. There's your interminable boredom punctuated by moments of terror. Semper Vigiles

It wasn't until way after I got out of the Army, that I learned my uncle Steve was ASA during Vietnam. Funny thing, I was in 519th ASA reserve unit, in Mt View Ca. 1982 to 1984. (Yes, I was named after Uncle Steve, my mother's second oldest brother.) Lightning fast chicken pluckers! steve

A great interview. I hung on every word. I was there, same story. But, Vietnam was a military victory. The Paris Peace Accord was terms of surrender. We got everything, they got nothing. Kissinger let Le Duc Tho save face because it was announced over Tet New Year so it was a peace treaty instead of terms of surrender. Le Duc Tho refused the Nobel Peace Prize out of shame. Three Nobel committee members resigned for giving Kissinger the prize after bombing his opponents into submission. VV day was March 27, 1973. There were zero deaths in 1974. The Democrat-controlled Congress in 1975 broke the peace treaty giving the North the green light to overrun the south. We had a hand full of the military there to assist with the evacuation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZnUinp-j6h9rc0
