Honestly, one of Kristin's best performances on the show. The makeup they did on her really did make her look like some sort of a sleep deprived addict. I also really enjoyed seeing Clark and Jonathan meet once again, a chance for them to both say goodbye for now. The Lex and Lillian scene really showed how he still isn't entirely overshadowed by the darkness, however, the path he has chosen will eventually lead to his demise. Thanks again guys ❤️

Schneider coming out of that white light is such a powerful moment! Like Clark, the viewers had already missed him badly at that moment. Respectfully, I feel like Michael just doesn’t understand the character- he said she’s the last person to do this but how many people do you know that willingly become addicted to drugs for the hell of it? This girl has been through so much, from being orphaned, to her best friend dying trying to save her and having survivors guilt, Whitney dying in a war after she sent that video and wishing she hadn’t, her dad leaving because his wife was insufferable and competing with a child, Adam tried to kill her then Jason went psycho on her and on top of that Clark keeps lying and then leaving her, like this girl cannot catch a break. Chloe mentioned before that Lana cries herself to sleep at night - she has ALWAYS felt lonely and she brings it up again at the end of this episode / she felt lonely even when she was with Clark. She’s broken and she just wanted that unconditional love that she never had the chance grow up with to the point where dying just didn’t really seem all that bad anymore so long as she could still see her parents.
@vbrandy70883 ай бұрын
Exactly!! After ALL the trauma and losses Lana experienced her becoming addicted to a serum that allowed her to see her parents when she was at her lowest point was not far stretch at all. It actually felt realistic and tragic that she went down that path. Michael really doesn't get the show or the characters apart from Lex and Lionel.
@GeminiWolfstarGaming3 ай бұрын
Every single point in your comment is extremely valid. With the series as a whole, I've always seen Lana as being more complex than the casual viewer thinks, and as a result she has the biggest character arc of the series. The girl has just been molded into a character that is so much more than just Clark's first love. I mean, out of all the characters from the mythos, Lana Lang is the one they could mold and shape the most as she's barely a character in the comics.
@joellej37243 ай бұрын
All of this! I so wish they brought Kristin for this episode. A real missed opportunity to really get to the heart of Lana's arc and character with this one!

Micheal doesn't even understand the show. What its supposed to be. What TV consisted of 20 yrs ago. And the fact this is a show where reality, normal nuance, and logical decisions take a back seat. Its combination popcorn TV, teen age drama, superhero show. It's not meant to be deep.
@asyouwish36362 ай бұрын
well said! I didn't expect that comment from Michael, but considering the way in which he watchs the show I guess I get why he was confused. I also think the story-editing was a bit disconnected, so from his point of view and considering they set up zero exposition, it does seem like it's out of the blue. but honestly I do think it tracks for Lana. every time she does something awful, it's only after a complete boiling point has been reached. this girl has been emotionally abused, lied to and manipulated, abandoned in all the ways a person can be. and yet she's always gotten back up when she's down. this was just too much for her. I know she doesn't wanna believe that the break up was responsible, but the break up absolutely lead to the overwhelming feeling of being alone - as break ups tend to do under the best circumstances. this girl has NOBODY. no family she can lean on. she has her friends but she knows it's not the same, and friends don't know what the inside of a relationship looks like, only you and your partner do so they can distract you from the pain of a break up but they can't make it better. plus she's still only like 20. and even if she was a full adult, you never stop wanting your parents to make it better. they are the only one in the whole world who can say "everything will be okay" and whether it's true or not, you feel better. so I get why she did it. but I do wish the writers had done a better job setting it up and following thru

it felt out of character the 1st time, but now on re-watch it does make sense in a way. good point about visiting the graves! i had forgotten. . . I think Lana is so traumatized by the nonstop losses she suffers and she has attention seeking behavior in general (which makes sense given she's grudgingly gotten used to also nonstop obsession). the story-edit of the ep was off for me so it brought me out of the story but upon further discussions I can see how she would have gone done this path
@vbrandy70883 ай бұрын
Exactly! Lana's trauma of losing her parents, missing them and wanting to feel closer to them was literally the foundation of the character and a recurring theme for her. Now add the fact that she was completely broken and lonely after her breakup with Clark, it's no wonder that she was drawn to this.

As mentioned in the Lucy episode, (and one of my favorite Smallville quotes to use in every day life) Lana played him like a Stradivarius. 😂 Given the events coming in Season 6, this seems like foreshadowing of the core of Lana and Lex's relationship. (Lies, manipulation etc.) It's just sad to think that all of the years Clark lied to Lana and Lex, it ultimately pushed them together. I think that is the basis of their bond, and good old Clark Kent is to blame. 🤦🏾♀️ Also, Cruiseville?! I'm putting down my deposit as we speak! 🚢🎉

Void was a dark episode that moved the story for Clark, Lana and Lex. I felt for Lana all she ever wanted was to stop losing the people that she loved and for Clark to be honest with her. In Void we see her at her lowest point trying to cop with her breakup with Clark and trying to find comfort in her parents. Lana missing her parents and trying to feel closer to them was the foundation of the character since the pilot. That feeling was exemplified when she lost Clark, she was broken and felt more alone than ever. The end of the ep felt hopeful hinting to her healing journey but alas things got darker in the future with Lex... Clark and Lex's death experience moments revealed a lot of their future. Clark's futur as a symbol of hope and justice and Lex's future of death and destruction. While that experience was helpful for Clark with Jonathan telling him about Lionel knowing his secrets, Lex was in strong denial about the person he became, still lying to himself and the people around him.

🌹crazy ep! great performance by Kristin, loved her makeup, so real. How much pain she must be in. Lana is completely broken. As tedious as she's been you can't help but feel sorry for her. Everyone she's loved has abandoned her in one way or another. She doesn't wanna face the loss of Clark but the grief is consuming her. so heartbreaking when she says to Clark "it wasn't because of us" that denial is exactly what leads her to Lex later on. I'm so confused by this guy lol the med student running human experiments on the side.1st he is cautious w the chemical to prevent permanent death, then when he gets caught he doesn't hesitate to murder Lex! lol then he chases after Lana (knowing she'll most likely kill herself) and stops her from dosing only to dose her himself WTF it's like they just needed there to be a specific villain for Clark to fight mid-script. oh man and the way he went out! so gross lol the whole Honduran side plot felt a bit disconnected, they keep sprinkling it into these eps w no connection to the main plots. just a bit disruptive in the editing. the Lionel and Martha scenes are great, Annette and Glover have such effortless chemistry and play off each other so well. would have liked to see Martha's response to Clark telling her about his vision of Jonathan. interesting vision Lex sees, his mother pissed at him, gives an insight into who she was when she was alive. and yet another warning for Lex that he choses to deny about his future and his impact on the world. beautiful scene w Jonathan 😭 More fallout from Clark's original decision to hide the truth from Lana, which is so very plot induced all to get Lana to this low point, to be so reckless that later she'll blindly believe in Lex despite so many red flags she'll experience w him in the next handful of eps, not to mention what she already knows about him 💔
@Costas223 ай бұрын
Lana still had to get that little dig at Clark when she said "I felt alone even when I was around other people". She meant him in particular, but she was civil about it. I mean, not that I blame her since Clark has constantly been portrayed as the villain of the relationship... I will say this much though. At least this scene has an air of maturity to it. And the lack of music (very rare for Clana scenes) is kind of eerie too. For me it's the last decent scene they would have for a year.
@floodgates1823 ай бұрын
I think she turns to Lex for revenge on Clark rather than any other reason. And it works, he becomes increasingly obsessed with her, as he hates not being able to save people. Remember, after the breakup she immediately runs to Lex and informs him that he's been bumped up in the queue. Pretty dark move.
@asyouwish36363 ай бұрын
@floodgates182 that's connected to her attention seeking behavior, I don't think Lana consciously is trying to get back at Clark but yeah it does make sense for her to want him to feel the pain and suffering she is going through and turning to his enemy would be a good way to do that. I think Lana is too compassionate to purposely be cruel, however she consistently leads w her emotions. it is in her character's nature to not see clearly when she's in pain. and the break up, regardless that it was simultaneously sudden and months in the making, is so devastating to her that it knocks reality off course. IRL they've shown that breakups affects the same part of the brain as grief. so for Lana, this is like another death and its more than she can take 💔
@floodgates1823 ай бұрын
@asyouwish3636 What makes you think she's compassionate? She already cheated on Whitney, then complained that he didn't trust her with his life crisis. She's not compassionate with Clark, understanding that simply some things require a large amount of trust to talk about, and that maybe she hasn't earned that trust, yet. Compassion is really not one of her main features. Later she will go on to torture Lionel which is the antithesis of compassion. I will agree that she doesn't consciously calculate how to do damage to Clark, but rather it is her instinctual cruelty, led by her arrogance and entitlement.
@asyouwish36363 ай бұрын
@floodgates182 wait how did she cheat on Whitney? when he decided, unilaterally, to long-distance their relationship by going half way around the world to fight in a war he expressed zero interest in until the day he signed up, and expected a 15 yr old to wait around for him? esp knowing she had been trying to break up w him for a while (even if he only knew it subconsciously) I can't believe I'm defending her lol but she has been very compassionate w Clark this whole season, and the times she wasn't were completely plot-induced and not character driven. like, Clark never gave her any warning or explanation for pulling away. he could have easily started by saying he's overwhelmed by the near-death experience and he needs time to get comfortable in his own skin again something like that, and considering he got shot in August and his father shockingly dies in January, that's a very completely reasonable time frame for anyone to not get back into their normal selves so if he had prepared her (for his pulling away) she would have been even more patient. she was getting frustrated, understandably, up until Jonathan's death because of Clark. she was reacting to him. but once Jonathan died, she was incredibly patient and understanding - look how she reacts at the start of Hypnosis when he not so subtlety turns down her invitation. she gives no condescension, she truly feels no rejection or hurt cuz she understands his pain (ie compassion) Lana has alot of flaws, but disloyalty isn't one of them. in fact, her loyalty has hurt her in the past and we all know what it does to her in S6.

I liked this episode because we can see that even characters like lana can have unresolved issues and flaws, and what they're willing to do sometimes, Kristen kreuk really nailed it with her performance here. It was a cool episode. The best part was the scene with Jonathan and then the little moment that Clark had with Lionel 20:38 NO, IT WAS NOT. IT WAS A GREAT EPISODE

So, this episode doubles as successfully showing Lana's struggle to deal with her break-up with Clark, and creates the ability to access and talk to deceased loved ones, so we can very interestingly see what Jonathan and Lex's mother has been up to since the episode, "Reckoning", for the former, and the episode, "Lexmas" for the latter. Clever! It's fitting to see Clark chasing after Braniac's tracks, soon after Lex gets their first with his vast resources from the previous episode. The Braniac thread generates interest as he is a menacing, powerful presence - A goal-oriented alien entity feels like a suitable step-up from the show's more simple, early years. The Lilian Luthor and Jonathan sequences are eerie and dramatic, and leave a huge and exciting impression. A great episode overall.

You shouldn't be championing Lana saying she'll be happy without Clark when she's the villain of his story, constantly betraying him and never grateful for like the 10 times he's literally saved her life, and literally started doing drugs without him.

@seriouslyzany92323 ай бұрын
@@amaliareynoso she’s the only morally good character that is repeatedly kicked down - it’s actually weird if you think about it - she’s never really had a run of “good episodes” and I’m not talking about being a FOTW target or a plot device for an episode, I mean she just goes through traumatic event after traumatic event and it only gets worse in S6, that it’s actually remarkable she’s still good natured and wanting to help people by the end of it. It’s a shame they only kept her as a point of contention between Clark and Lex because - as seen here and even by the end of her arc - she can definitely hold her own, had they given character even a little respect
@amaliareynoso3 ай бұрын
I completely agree with you. I get that superhero stories 9 times out of 10 deal with the characters losing their parents, but her storyline is just trauma after trauma just like you said. And for the longest time I felt like I can relate to her in the aspect of feeling alone. And yeah, I get that the show has to go based on the comics where Clark and Lois end up together and maybe I’m just too invested in the plot, but it really bugs me the way Clark dealt with their separation and their break up. I know that he meant to break up with her for her “benefit” as he sees it, but just the way he went about it. It was kind of giving the impression that he didn’t care about her even though I’m sure he did and I know people are gonna have their opinions about it and I’m just being a big baby about it 😂, but I feel like the way he decided to break things off with her was a big slap in the face for her, so yeah, this episode was cheesy as most people would see it, but I don’t blame her for doing something crazy as these near death experiences just to feel loved and welcomed and watching the whole show for the second time, I also don’t blame her for going to Lex more often in these coming episodes. Because when I watched it for the first time around these episodes, I really hated Lex lol but now watching it for the second time, he’s not really to blame but again this is the way the story is supposed to go I suppose so that the plot can go aligned with the comics

Got my question aired on the 100th episode where I asked . Should we have kept Lana die and have the relationship end that way? And keep Jonathan around a few more years? Because yes Michael they get back together 2 or 3 more times before it's officially over. And it always felt so dragged out just for fans sake and got old so fast. I think it would've been more impact full if Jonathan died. Clark stopped it from happening. Killing Lana instead . Or just killing her and no time travel

It doesn't seem like it, but Tom actually had a reduced screentime in this episode because he was prepping to direct the next episode. It would actually become part of the course that actors directing an episode would have few scenes in the previous one. Void was one of those episodes where they covered his absence well. In others, like Static or Sleeper, his absence is badly felt.
@asyouwish36363 ай бұрын
yeah but the story-edit was still a little off for me. the Milton Fine deviation. .you could def tell his scenes (even the off camera ones) were shot separately and it kinda made me wish they didn't sprinkle him so much over so many eps, in retrospect. plus the way they slam shut the ep was supposed to be foreshadowing (they did it same for Jonathan a couple eps b4 he dies) but here it felt out of place only because they didn't build to it. but I'm just nitpicking lol you know i have nothing but love for the show
@Costas223 ай бұрын
@@asyouwish3636 My guess is that Tom did those exterior shots at the same time Michael did them with James Masters for Hypnotic. It's not much, but at least it gave him an added presence to this episode. If he hadn't done them, he would have only been in this episode for the Chloe scene and then for the last 10 minutes. Plus, it was nice to see the Brainiac stuff a bit followed up on this week. Now we know that Clark knows he's still alive. I agree that it was a bit choppy though.

That piano trick, they did something similar on Dukes of Hazzard. There’s an episode, I think the gambling 18-wheeler one, where Uncle Jesse is showing them all of his card tricks and doing different shuffling tricks, but those hands are actually John Schneider’s 😆 he just stuck his arms down Denver’s shirt or whatever and that’s how they did that shot 😁

Is Ryan coming to the next Smallville Con? I hope so! Thanks guys - it has been a stressful day, and it was a fun distraction to watch the podcast. ❤ Thanks for the humor, too. Tom, if this is season is dragging, how are you going to make it to season 10? LOL (please make it through seasons 8 -10, they're my favorite. ☺️) Anyway, my 2 favorite scenes were the near-death experiences of Lex and Clark. I rewatched "Void" today, and I have to say, the scene when Jonathan's spirit talks to Clark, I cried a bit. Well, I also cry when Jonathan appears to Clark in season 10, but I'll get into that when you get to that season. Lana definitely has been through a lot. Even though it may be out of character that she would go to such extremes, I can see why she would want to connect with her parents. I like how the episode ended, too. Even after they really part ways for the last time (seasons after this one,) I think Clark still just wants her to be happy, and in the end, she will be okay (I like to think Lana becomes the hero of her own life, after her final character arc.) Shout out to the Patron Karen - I'll always remember my favorite teacher in high school. They encouraged me to pursue art as a career. I also love the storytelling in Smallville! In regards to one of the call-in questions...Wow Tom - you said you became an asshole? Really? Looking forward to next week's Podcast. I really like the next episode. Lois tries to help Clark, the artistic girl with powers, etc...

Well, Lana was a cheater from S1, she was never meant to be more than the disloyal super hero girlfriend trope, and they overdid it. She's never been very interesting as a character, never growing, never self critical, never questioning her bad behaviour, never called out on it, either. I can't really feel sorry for her at any point, as she never feels sorry for her victims.

I think one of the main parts that confused me, though, specifically with Lana‘s visions, is it’s almost like the writers completely forgot about the whole season that they dedicated to Lana finding her illegitimate biological dad in Henry small. But then again, I guess it’s the one that she grew up with that she always knew as Dad even though he I guess was not actually her biological dad. I don’t know. Like we always say, suspend disbelief. It’s just kind of funny how Henry small has never been brought up a single time ever again after season two
