VoIP Dialing Without a PBX

At one time I had the misconception that you had to have an IP PBX to use a VoIP phone, but it's simply not true. In this video I'll show you how to dial another VoIP phone without routing through the PBX or SIP Proxy.

Im I understanding you correctly. I can basically connect two GPX2000's to my Router and as long as I know each phones IP I can call each phone on my network?

Hey thanks alot, I will definitely investigate the link, what I'm trying to do is ensure that 1000's of Cisco ip phones have dail tone. It's easy to ping them and see that packets are indeed being sent and received. But it's apparently not good enough for the customer they need dail tone testing, I'm currently finding the fastest way to test them, as with all piece pay work time is of the essence, trying to use a raspi running freepbx has over complacaited the process. Any other advice or ideas are extremely welcome thanks!!

+Kevin James Potentially you could program all the phones for auto-answer (if they have that feature) from the call manager and then call each one to see if it answered. Like I said, I don't know much about cisco, but it could potentially save you some time.

Hey great video, I have a few questions about voip calling doing what you've done here, I can't find any direct ip calling settings on cisco ip phones? Will this only work with grandstream phones? Not many resources online discussing this for cisco. Any help would be great, I've tried using linphone and calling the ip of said phone and it never rings threw. Thanks in advance.

+Kevin James Hi Kevin. I'm not completely familiar with cisco products but after looking around a bit, it looks like there is a possibility to IP dial using Cisco phones. Nice Video. I found it very interesting that you can do that. I got 2 questions: 1. Can you dial with the ip address on a cisco phone? 2. What is the difference between an ip pbx and a sip proxy?

1. I'm not sure because I don't deal with them much, but I think it's a feature that can be enabled. Might not be the person to ask this. 2. Think of an IP PBX as an all in one PBX that has many capabilities one of which is the ability to be an IP PBX. A SIP proxy by itself is responsible for connecting to phones together and then usually stepping out of the way to allow the connection to be between the two instruments.

So this feature can be done if you zero out the IP addresses on the SIP proxy and register. It uses the latter block of a LAN IP address to do peer to peer calling. However, this is great during a Post Zombie Apocalypse; however this also referred as "Direct IP Calling". From the simple point of view, this is how "ghost" calls exist on SIP sets. Worse; this is actually how voice spam; and bad boys can use this to scam callers if such sets are used in wide deployments. From my understanding, Direct IP Calling is strongly * not * recommended, which also means the Grandstreams, Aastra, Polycoms are the only ones that could do this. I think newer Cisco SIP and Avaya and other vendors have tried to turn away from this feature. It's cool and it should be only for the home as you see. Not to mention the regulated environment of office telephone systems these days.

Not normally. If you are referring to calling a normal Landline phone or cellphone that will cost money.

It's easy. But generally it's better to have a pbx, direct calling has problems and it's not very flexible and you cannot call out via the Landline to other normal phones, without a PBX with a fxo port..
