Tempo sells an 8 pin Banjo now. You can also test poe with it using a multi meter with alligator clips.

Awesome suggestion for the cradlepoint hotspot test! These cradlepoints can be pretty pricey. I've done similar testing by connecting my laptop to my phone's 4G hotspot then bridging my network adapter and my WiFi adapter. Doing this effectively turns the network adapter of my laptop into a connection to my mobile network allowing me to perform the same testing.

A long time ago when I was in school they taught us how to do packet capture by setting our ethernet card into something called promiscuous mode? We could then wait for the others in the classroom to log into Windows and then we could capture that data and analyze and find their password. Is this mirroring device similar? And could you do this without a hub if you can run your PC ethernet in promiscuous mode?

15:30 I actually use my laptop instead of the cradlepoint, connect the laptop to my cell hotspot and share the connection thru my ethernet port.

That’s cool Juan. I always knew that was possible, just to lazy to figure it out 😆

A cheaper option for port mirroring switch is the Netgear GS305E they are $24.99 as of the writing of this comment. It's a managed smart switch so you will need to set up the port mirror yourself but there's videos on KZbin showing how to do it and shouldn't take all of 5 minutes.

Wow, I wasn’t aware you could get a managed switch at such an affordable price. Thank you so much for sharing that information! 😁

The bonus of the DCSW-1005PT is that it has POE pass through AND its USB powered so in a dark comms room the port mirroring switch will be powered from your laptop USB port, and pass POE from your IT managed network switch through to the phone you're wiresharking.

Really? The sound is that bad? I think for that video I was using my camcorder with an external RODE Condenser mic.

You don't need a LAN tap to do a packet capture. Lol.
@VoIPTelecom
@VoIPTelecom 4 жыл бұрын
and so how do you do it without setting-up port mirroring? Hub, maybe?
@nilpo
@nilpo 4 жыл бұрын
@@VoIPTelecom Sure, a hub is always an option if you have an old one laying around. But I was more thinking port mirroring. Unless you're working covert, you're always going to have access to the switch anyway 99.9% of the time.
@VoIPTelecom
@VoIPTelecom 4 жыл бұрын
@@nilpo oh yes. Totally 100% agree on the mirroring. With the line of work I'm in (independent field tech contractor), often times it's next to impossible to get a switch admin on the line to setup the mirror. And, obviously, they're not about to give me the CLI access. Sounds like you're in this kind of work? Appreciate you chiming-in so others can learn from your experience. :-)

@@VoIPTelecom Ok, good point. In my world, I typically have keys to the castle already. But yes, if you're not the managing firm or you're in a larger environment where access is delegated then you may not have access to the switch at the time. It's very limiting to use a tap since your can only see what's travelling through the cable you're connected to. If you're troubleshooting a specific device it's exactly what you need and a quick means to an end. In my world, I'm rarely troubleshooting a specific device. I'm generally trying to look at the entire network segment. The key is having the right tool for the right job. Sometimes a network tap is the right tool.

Typically, the number one thing I'm looking for is to find out where the registration (the VoIP) is breaking down. usually, it's blocked ports, a bad account, or whacky DNS. Thanks so much for the valuable discussion. And, thanks for watching!😁
