Yes, people do live near many active volcanoes worldwide! Populated areas like Naples in Italy near Mount Vesuvius, the town of Goma near Mount Nyiragongo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and cities like Kagoshima in Japan near Sakurajima are all near active or potentially active volcanoes. Some residents stay because of fertile soil from volcanic ash, cultural ties, and tourism opportunities, though they also have to live with evacuation plans and monitoring systems due to the risks involved.
