The fact that it is a mixtape makes it what it is in my opinion. It’s unhinged, experimental, yet coherent throughout. An amazing body of work. Faces could also mean disguises. A way of coping. Wearing a mask. “Wearing my disguise my real face is fucking hideous” or “no matter where life takes me find me with a smile” pretending everything is fine. Or replacing ur character to suit the people around you: wearing their face. With Faces Mac Faces his “real” self and completely took out the mask, the gloomy smile u always see him carrying and stopped lying to himself that everything is alright although it would turn to be in the end. On Malibu he says “I’m the only suicidal motherfucker with a smile on” on friends he goes “look at my reflection I broke the mirror, it’s only for protection shit keep getting weirder”... wearing that disguise protected him. Spoke to a friend of mine and she mentioned this being a coping mechanism, wearing a mask. It doesn’t mean being fake, it’s like wearing clothes to cover whatever is under, it’s still you only that u’re wearing clothes. Or ego-death. The drugs could’ve also gave him different faces as he was experiencing life as something totally different. He was nowhere close to planet earth when he made Faces as u already know. Acid could allow u to face ur real self/real face. The beautiful part is, Faces can resonate with you in different ways so I don’t think Mac intended a definite interpretation of what Faces is.

I've discovered Mac Miller's music really late, like 1 year ago. Since then, I've been in love with his music. I can't explain why, but it's the first time in my 20 years of life that an artist and his music make that much sense to me. I'm not even english so I barely understand what he's singing, I don't event recognize myself in his story since I've never struggled with drugs or anything but just the sound and the vibe of the music resonate in me. It feels right. And for a year now, for the first time, I took the time to discover one by one every projects of Mac, and all of them so far are incredible, I loved everything i've heard. Thinking that this guy, this talent and this genius is gone, and won't create anything new, it breaks my heart.
