12:35 -- in e-Golf you go into 'B' mode (full recuperation) with a single action: pull back on the shifter and release. It's a toggle: pull back and release again and you're back in coast mode. It took me a year with my e-Golf to discover this and I use it all the time.

Those random bits of plastic in the back door pocket are for covering the isofix points. Unfortunately VW chooses to use these instead of little spring loaded flaps like other manufacturers

I have one Bob and have done 4000k since August. Love it to bits fast nippy and similar feel to my old 2000 GTI. Can fit lots in back. You only get 230 when you drive very sensibly. I have a home charger and never need 200+ in one day. I use the coasting more than regeneration and enjoy it. Re-coup not really needed. Great review though

I just flew from Seattle to Los Angeles, bought a used '15 eGolf with 34k miles and then drove it back to Seattle. The car is fantastic and I am ready to buy another. If more people would get in one of these and drive one like I did several months ago with a great friend, I am sure they would buy one. I am a hard core shopper so found a much better deal in LA than anything available in Seattle. Driving over Mt. Shasta was very doable as well. I regenerated massively on the slope down into Oregon. Get one, you won't regret it.

We purchased a 2018 eGolf. With the provincial rebate, the car came to $28k. My wife is the primary driver, it suits her perfectly. She gets a free charge at her workplace parking lot. She drives it mainly from home to work and back. Would I pay $40k? No, but the rebate made it more than worth it. We save $300 a month in gas and the egolf is the same trim as the GTI.

Alot of reviews have mentioned wind noise because the normal Golf has an engine to drown it out but the e-golf you hear everything. That's the beauty of an electric car which was built from the ground up to be electric.
@BobFlavinVideo
@BobFlavinVideo 5 жыл бұрын
There's wind noise in all EV's cars, the Leaf has it around the wing mirrors. It's impossible to avoid in car design, you can minimize it with double glazing and contouring the mirror but it'll still be there if you listen.

Lotus invented car sound inversion technology (basically taking the noise as a waveform and near instantaneously using inverted copy of it to cancel it out.) I believe Caeiliac ELR uses this, piped through speakers close to the passengers' heads. I'd be surprised if the Golf wasn't using it.

Good idea to revisit the available EVs options in Ireland. In this context, are you going to review charging speeds and related infrastructure? While most people will generally charge at home at night time, and save a fortune on running costs, we still need to be able to take the occasional longer trip across the country. For this use case it is important to have decent and reliable fast charging infrastructure. I know the ESB have rolled out a certain amount of this but most of these locations only have a single fast charger. Possibly the new CCS fast chargers from Ionity will help as these will have multiple stalls and there will be some in Ireland.

There is an American "engineering explained" who does just that kind of video. And heating doesn't effect that much on range. Have a Zoe myself and it is just a few km. If that is the big problem than you do some poor planning :) Over 240 km with kids I have to stop 1 time if not more. And in those times just a fast charger. Most new cars can take 100kWh chargers and more. That is a turning point.

@@martijnvangammeren1868my point is how can we say all electric is the solution without data. If we all switch to electric vehicles fine you reduce the transport emissions % and increase the emissions from production of electricity which for the most part is produced using coal. Same can be applied to car production. The power required to produce an electric car could be lower in theory however these cars use mainly aluminum vs. Steel which has a higher power consumption to produce and process vs. Steel. Same can be applied to engine produxtion. You remove the kw to produce engine and transmission and replace. t with battery production and battery spares. Lithium production uses a very high amount of power to convert the salts to battery material. So its not black and white and needs proper studies. Who knows the overall energy comparison might be a wash and you might find there is no improvement in global emissions or it might be significant reduction. Without facts how can anyone say which is better. Lol diesel was our solution a few years ago which made no sense

Using the heated seats to keep warm is a good tip, but saying the heater uses shed loads of energy is so old phobia. It’s just not true these days. The days of distance or heat have been left behind YEARS ago. Most cars use heat pumps which are a zillion times more efficient than the old heater element. So great that you are doing a series on electric cars, but better if the info you were giving out was up to date.

Heating doesn't effect that much on range. And it all depends on distance. But if it is more than 800km you had to stop multiple times already with those children "have to pee" and have a lunch. If you do a tiny bit of trip planning you don't loose time if you have to do a little fast charging. I did a 1000km trip just a while ago in a Tesla Model S and I was just as fast as I would normally drive in an ICE car and yes it was around 12 hours driving.

It’s takes me 5 mins to fill my car with diesel and it takes my friend a few hours to charge his electric car, and then he has to compromise when driving long distance as to where charging ports are? And when he gets there he has to either wait ( especially during of term school time ) to use one, and then once plugged in as to wait a few hours for it to charge up. I personally would rather buy a hybrid or wait a bit longer for the infrastructure around electric cars to become more user friendly.

When your diesel car is sitting outside work/home and is doing nothing that's when you fill the EV. Most cars do nothing all day, or maybe when you are asleep. It's getting better and I think we are at the beginning of something great.

All depends on distance. Most people do not drive more than this EV can handle on a daily base. Most people can do 3 days without charging even. You charge while you do different things yourself like sleeping, being at home or at office. Some city's do have chargers which you can use while shopping. Then almost all new EV cars come with CCS fast charging and those are a common sight in Western Europe. Just take a look at what you really drive every day. We have two cars, a Zoe for most driving and a Focus stationwagon for long distance and if I need to take a lot of stuff. I like driving the Zoe far more and it even cover 70% of my use case. If Renault only made one of their wagons electric or the "new" Espace. That would be my favourite Ev by far.

@@martijnvangammeren1868 a car should be bought to accommodate everything the prospective owner may want it to do. This argument about the percentage of long journeys is bogus, everybody does long journeys sometimes and with the present rapid charging infrastructure and the electric cars available (apart from £70k and above Tesla's) today they are abysmal and take twice as long on long journeys, at a very expensive purchase price, a price that the average 10,000 mile average 5 year owner will never see back in cheaper fuel. Electric cars are at the £600 video recorder stage and yet to fight the vhs/betamax battle on charging connecters as well. My advice as a present leaf owner to others, is to wait until electric cars become a mature product with all the improvements that changes in price, usability and infrastructure will bring.

@@stevezodiac491 Do people do that? I see so many sedan drivers at Ikea to buy stuff they never can get in their car. However, long range is getting cheaper and cheaper. VW is pricing their I.D. Neo around the price of the current Golf diesel, so let's say 30k Euro. They are doing two versions, one 300km and a 500km range. The last one will be more like 35k knowing VW. But the Golf still is so popular in Europe to buy new that the price is really good. That with the fast charging is no problem to get around in Western Europe. I just had a break with a Zoe to go to the Eifel in Germany, alright I do live near Ghent so it isn't that far, but I had no issues getting there with a tiny bit of planning and only one stop to have a lunch, we are on vacation. Yes it only is 200 km give or take. But I know others who did journeys to the Alps in a Zoe and still managed good milage on a day. But if you normally drive 40km a day should you let the car depend on the once or the a year vacation that with some basic planning will be achievable in a decent EV like the Leaf/Kona etc. And the Kona is really good on milage.

@@BobFlavinVideo No, consider it hyperbole. But if I had to turn off heating / AC in frozen Scotland, the energy savings are very unappealing indeed. I just think that battery tech really has to make considerably more ground to get a 'typical' motorist into one of these cars. For instance, for 6 years I have had to do 400 mile trips, twice a week. An electric car is completely useless for that. Now, being a petrolhead and noticing other cars, I can say a large slice of other motorists also deal with the same kind of journeys, not most certainly, but a lot. Well presented video Bob. Sadly this isnt for me and I may struggle to watch your electric series. The E golf is very clever but its still a huge compromise, for the same reason I dont sit in the house with my coat on and my hat and gloves, or for the same reason I dont eat bread and peanut butter every day I wont buy an electric car where I have to compromise. You normalise knocking off the air con, or reducing performance when in a lot of conditions thats going to be very impracticable. Height of summer with no aircon and depths of winter with the heated seat you keep your bum warm isnt enough. I live on the north west coast of cumbria, Im travelling to manchester airport next week, its a 470km round trip, just about doable with no heating and driving like I have nowhere to be in the next 4 hours. I think theres a long way to go, and spending £32k on this isnt a good step. While I'm rambling on, a couple of things. I drive an Octavia so I know when you say things like 'the boot space is 2nd to none' I know you know how far off ths mark that comment is! Also the little plastic things you found look like the bits that cover the hinges on the rear of the back seats! Keep up the good work, I'll try and watch the rest of the series but I find positives about e cars hard to swallow. Cheers and all the best!

@Biggles I see what you did there! I'll be trecking down the M6 with the car loaded up for a snowboarding trip, so the peasant wagon is out of the question. I would have had the superb sportline 220 if it had sti been available but I'll make do with the octavia for now. Especially since it has the volume and zoom knobs on the entertainment unit ;) and I can use the heater while I'll be driving at 4AM in the middle of winter! To be fair I dont go that far that often but I choose not to buy a specific car for commuting purposes, which is what this kind of car seems aimed at. A 1.4tsi golf for example would be much cheaper if 10 mile commutes are your thing, the extra £10k would pay for a lot of fuel, the environment not withstanding. Lets see what happens when electric go mainstream, electricity demand goes up and fuel demand goes down. I wonder if the oil companies will buy the electric companies and put the unit cost through the roof....
