You need to push up the spring-loaded wedge of the automatic brake adjuster before taking off the brake drum. You can easily reach the wedge with a screwdriver through a hole for the wheel bolt in two o´clock position. After this, you can take off the drum with one hand.

Great video. This may sound stupid but if the rear axle is a solid piece then what does the anti-roll bar do? I thought they only connected two sets of wheels that are independently suspended with wishbones or similar. Does the box-section of the axle flex without the roll bar? 'Liked' as usual.

Looks great I love the results, I typed a huge comment but youtube deleted it. Anyways you may want to consider ball joint extenders to retain control arm geometry and and big rear bar depending on how tail happy you want your Mk1 to be. I usually run my Mk1 without a front bar.

My project is quite old & rusty - when it comes to fasteners. I soaked those 4 nuts holding the rear beam pivots, in pbblaster several times - over several weeks- and wire brushed the threads, nervous I would shear a stud off. After a few weeks of multiple soaking of pbblaster, those nuts came off without an impact, just broke loose with a ratchet by hand. I'm so glad for quality videos like this Memphis.

Nice Video, but you should have painted the new Drums also, they normally rust again faster than you can look. I know what I'm talking about, did the same thing a couple years ago for my 83 GTI Pirelli.

If you have the possibility, it's always better to torque any "suspension" related bushing to spec once the vehicle is on its feet under load or when everything is at a "driving angle" (not loose on the bench, or with the wheels loose on a lift). Not stating that you would damage or harm the bushings if you don't, but it's an extra..

A word of advice, you have put in so much effort so you might as well paint the new drums too. Trust me they look all shiny now but after a few car washes and rain, when you see them covered in rust you will regret not painting the drums.
