Another pro tip is to pour the coolant with the canister held sideways. This will allow the coolant to drain more evenly and avoid a mess.

You want Ferodo DS2500 material pads for track days, much better heat resistance than Green stuff and works fine cold. I had the same problem in my modified Volvo 360 with brake fade on my local track (solid disks). The GLT sporty version used the same disks annoyingly, so I upgraded to 276mm Mercedes vented disks with EBC blue stuff, but this required a brake adaptor and probably illegal in your country. If you use the brakes hard on the track alot, you need to check for crazing and cracking regularly. I found my drilled and grooved disks lasted about 2 yrs, one had completely cracked through, still was braking fine. If you see crazing then replace.

Great Video! I have the Canadian version of a Mk1 Jetta Coupe in GLi trim. It looks very similar to your friends except mine has the quad square headlights. I had a coolant hose pop on my car too - it sounded like a gun shot. 30+ year old rubber will do that. My car also only had non-ventilated brakes as well, which I thought was strange as the GLi was the sport model. I did the same as you and upgraded to ventilated. You won't notice it in daily-driving, but you will get slightly better braking on the track. Cheers!

You watch these awsome videos where people work on their cars, you get inspired and you think "oh, I need to do some work on my car!". Then you cant find right tools, then you get dirty, then you broke something while trying to fix something else and time isn't sped up like in videos. You get angry and sad, because you know your car still need a lot of work and parts, money.. Then you go home sad and broken and watch some more car videos :D Love these videos man. Hope you get more subscribers! You deserve it!

firstly that's a cool mk1 jetta, I've gotten a mk2 jetta for cheap too, it needs a bit of work but we're still under lockdown in my country. Planning on stripping it removing all the rust and giving it a sweet wrap, will definitely do a rear disc conversion though. good thinking with the bigger radiator and hopefully those pads and vented discs do their thing on the track.

nice work guy , I've already done this work on my VW Gol, radiator is an item that needs attention, here in Brazil, it is very hot and one of the problems we have is the thermostatic valve. To upgrade the brakes you can put a brake booster (i think it's the right word in english, by the way in french it's mastervac) from a convertible mk1 from after 91 with a master cylinder from a golf 2 g60 without ABS, works realy fine !
@walterbutscher84384 жыл бұрын
I didn't see you add the radiator shroud for better air flow? If you didn't your air is flowing over your radiator not thru it. I also had issue with ceramic brake pads where as I had to remove the decal but haven't noticed any effect on braking. Good to see the MK1 again.

@sneekeruk4 жыл бұрын
I hope greenstuffs have changed in the last 20 years, I had them on my mini years ago and whilst they had good bite and fade resistance, they gave off so much brake dust my front wheels where black. I also warped my oem non vented discs but they didnt really matter as I hadnt changed the disks. Now during its rebuild it gained grooved discs, oem pads and braided lines.
