I talked to multiple EV drivers who were having trouble charging. They really don't make the education available for new drivers and it's up to KZbinrs to educate. Thanks for your channel.

Actually it’s the “not that you care” content that makes road trip videos more interesting and personal. Just hashing out facts with some side commentary is just stale. Great job and fun trip. And even when there’s issues at a charger, it’s interesting to see how you handle it and helpful for when someone runs into similar situations.

I avoided the Bedford EA when I was going from Ohio to DC. It often fills up and there’s nothing else around charging wise. That’s one thing I wish ABRP could do, plan stops with a nearby backup

Just took a very similar trip in my Mach E from WI to DE. Glad to see that yours went smooth. Unfortunately for me I hit a snag in the Chicago area with the EA chargers. It's also interesting to see the trip time from an ID4 vs Mach E. Think my trip took about 16ish hours, so that extra speed you get when plugging in definitely helped

I love how authentic you are. I love that you own an ID 4! I want one so bad, I have a VW Tiguan at the moment. Thank you for making these videos, you’ve helped me prepare for my purchase. I’m going to get the 2024 ID 4 🎉 Q: Did you get the 3 years of free charging?

Thanks!!! Our ID.4 did come with the charging plan. I just always included what it would have costs so people have an idea of what it costs to road-trip an EV!

@@theaverageev oh I love that you do that! Letting us get a sense of what to expect with real-world pricing. Do you use the hotspot to connect a notebook or tablet to it? If so, which carrier do you use? I use T-Mobile and I love it because even in the mountains, it still gets a data connection. I’m wondering how well the internal antenna is for the ID 4 compared to my Tiguan, or if better?

I have a Tesla Y/LR 2+ months and decided to check out some FREE superchargers on the NY State Thruway on my way to a Tesla supercharger. The NYS website stated they were J1772 chargers. Hey--that adapter came with my car! When I got there, the chargers only had CCS and CHAdeMO, which of course don't fit that J1772. Oh, come to find out later that CCS is J1772 but with 2 extra pins. So I don't blame the guy for being confused. But yeah, the Tesla navigator takes you right to the Tesla chargers. And Tesla not only has in-car videos on the basics, but also a free online session where you can ask questions (I never thought to ask where can I use that J1772 adapter!)

Curious on your comment of “4-5%, just where the ID.4 likes it.” I would have an aneurysm with just 10 miles left... I get down to 1/4 of a tank in my Pilot and I get squirrelly…and that’s good for about 125 highway miles. Is there a formal recommendation to run it that low for fast charging and if so why?
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Жыл бұрын
Great question! With the way I like to road trip, I try to take advantage of the fastest charging speeds and then when it gets under 100kW, I move on so I can get the same fast charging speeds instead of staying longer and getting the 76-92kW the ID.4 gets from 60-80ish%. The 2023 ID.4 with the SK battery can charge up to 186kW from 0-22ish%. So you can almost get a quarter of a tank in 5 minutes, half tank in 12 minutes. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with. So If you want to have no worries, just charge up to 80% each time and then move on (unless you would need more than 80% because of a charging desert). If you want to maximize time, then charging to 50% each time and going to the next charger can be faster if the charging stations aren't too far off the road. So in closing for now, it is probably best for drivers to charge to 70 or 80% and feel confident. Over time charging infrastructure will expand and be more accessible. When this happens, people will become more confident to go down to lower states of charge for roadtrips since they know they will be able to get a charge easily. We just aren't there yet in the US. In many countries in Europe (Like Germany) charging is abundant and drivers have no range or charging anxiety!

Nice trip. I am really going to have to get used to unplugging when I get my next car. I just let it ride to at least 80% with the e-tron as there is no speed penalty. That makes planning very lazy because you can always get 180 mile legs. that is it. If you want more, stay plugged in a bit longer, but unplugging earlier is not worth it.

I have an interesting video coming out soon where I see what is the most efficient way to charge for road-trips for different cars. Was definitely surprised at some of the data!

Do you recommend always clearing the short term trip memory when road tripping? Please reply thank you
@theaverageev
@theaverageev Жыл бұрын
So I leave long term the whole trip and clear the others. It gives me a good perspective on consumption. Additionally, I’m pretty sure the range in the screen is based on the long term trip. So by leaving it you get a slightly more accurate planned trip when using the built-in navigation!

Could be that was a Tesla rented from Hertz, who is now downsizing their EV fleet because the user experience for first time EV drivers is too much of a challenge.

Also you may want to consider getting a Polarizing filter to fit over your phone camera to cut out the glare when you are recording the charger screens.

On a good day, how long can your ID.4 actually pull more than 150kW ? More than 10 minutes?
@theaverageev
@theaverageev 9 ай бұрын
For 10-80% it was above 150kW for 6 minutes. If you go from 0% maybe 8 minutes? Here’s my original charge curve video! kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioa5e5abo9ZkjtU

@@theaverageev so by using a 350 kW charger, you're only maybe going to save a couple of minutes overall even if the vehicle can ask for > 150kW. If it can't, then there is really no benefit. Correct?
@theaverageev

@@Gweeper64 Correct! I don’t stress too much if I have to use a 150kW charger.
