Very helpful. Advice to the viewer though - you don't actually have to take out that thing that holds the battery in place. Just loosen it enough to take the battery out.

Hey people, be sure to just loosen the terminal nuts, don't try to wrench them all the way off. You jus need a little space. Otherwise, you could end up stripping them and you'll have a whole new problem. Be careful.

I just heard that with these Jetta’s that you have to put some kind of electronic charging device on the car as you’re switching batteries or else you’re gonna lose all your computer data and the car won’t start. I know that’s not true because I took my battery off and put it back on, and nothing happened except they had to change the clock time.
@gracemakeslace Жыл бұрын
I've heard similar things but last night my battery died(maybe my starter too? Nothing showed signs of it getting weak but the car is 8 years old now, the battery is nearly 4 years old and it's starting to get a bit cold at night). It must have something to do with either dealerships trying to scam us consumers and enough people fell for it that it's a sunk in rumor, or it was true of older Jettas.

You do not mention using a scanning tool??..Garages here have told me the VW dealership will have to change the battery as the computer system of the car needs to be reset. Even CAA and Canadian Tire Auto here in Canada cannot change it?.

Good day and Happy New Year. I have to replace the battery for my girlfriend's 2018 VW Jetta. Now did you say that it's the 13mm socket for the bottom battery plate holder and 10mm for the battery nut terminals on the battery.? What size is the wrench head for the socket to fit in and extender is it 1/2" or 3/4". Extender should be I presume at least 12 inches long or so. Thanks!
@QuiteAlright2 жыл бұрын
Happy New Year to you as well. You can go with 3/8 wrench head and extender the longer the better. And yes 13mm socket is the bottom battery holder and 10mm nut terminals
@bladerunner56802 жыл бұрын
@@QuiteAlright Thanks. I went out and got my 3/8 socket set from 10mm and up. Got an 12 inch extender. The socket ad another 3 inches so that will work out nice. Thanks for the video you made it simple to understand what is to be done to replace the battery. We also will need to take car in to reset a few indicators that went on.

Any idea how to reset the computer after replacing the battery? All the lights on instrument panel are on now and can’t access additional menu items.
@QuiteAlright3 жыл бұрын
You would need a scanner to see / reset the codes. But you shouldn't have any lights triggered by replacing the battery. Are you sure you didn't cause any kind of short while replacing the battery?

My daughter recently went thru this at Autozone. Rep didn’t know how to code the battery to the car. Guy next door came over from the tire shop. All lights lit up on dash. He turned the steering wheel all the way to the left. Then, all the way to the right and that resets the system. All lights went off immediately. No computer or scan tool needed

@QuiteAlright9 күн бұрын
I've replaced bunch of batteries on newer VW and never had any issues. But said that I've heard sometimes replacing battery could trigger check engine light and other warning lights and would have to be reset by vagcom. If that happens you will have to visit dealer or mechanic that has vagcom scanner to reset it

What if the factory alarm won't disarm after replacing the battery?
@QuiteAlright3 жыл бұрын
Hmm you might have to take it to VW dealer to have it disarmed for you or you can try doing it yourself if you have access to vag com scanner

Can you use any battery for the Jetta
@QuiteAlright2 жыл бұрын
No, you will need a battery group 47 or 48, both will work. Again depends which engine is in your Jetta and where you live. If you live in cold climate I would go with a bit higher CCA rating (680) should do it.

I can't tighten the 10mm terminal nut. The bolt turns with my socket. Any advice how I can tight the bolt?
@QuiteAlright3 жыл бұрын
You will have to replace the terminal connector. They are very cheap (under $10) and easy to replace. You can get them at any car part store. Don't drive without the battery being connected properly

@QuiteAlright3 жыл бұрын
@@channi58 Your new battery probably isn't the OE exact fit as recommended by the vw. So the battery poles and everything will fit, but you went a bit outside of recommendations. Batteriers are divided into groups, each vehicle and trim level will have OEM speciifed battery group which consists of amps, cold cranking amps, dimensions,...
@channi583 жыл бұрын
@@QuiteAlright it was the recommended one in the Costco tool. So it's strange how costco does that recommends a slightly larger form (length dimension). In the store hard to tell but it looked slightly larger to me until I measured it confirming my suspicion. However it works fine. So I'm happy the jetta is back in service for us. It's our workhorse.
