I have one of the old-school deflection torque wrenches. Will that be accurate enough or should I get a click or digital style? Great camera work btw. Super clear. Do you have a video for changing the PCV valve (oil separator) for this vehicle?
@BradleysGarage7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question Floyd, appreciate the feedback. The old school torque wrench will be perfectly fine for the doing the spark plugs. It doesn't have to be exactly perfect, the goal is to just not overtighten them. Changing the PCV (oil separator) at the same time as the plugs makes a lot of sense. Here is a great video from FCP Euro, where we get most of our Euro parts from. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6bSgp2pfLuAjM0 Good luck on your VW project. Cheers!

Thank you! I just purchased the oil separator yesterday from FCP Euro. So thankful for folks like you on YT making videos like this. Between the plugs and PCV I’ll save around $400 DIY.

Thanks! I just bought a 2016 Passat with this engine and am about to put new spark plugs in. I am curious as to why you did not replace the coil packs at the same time since the car has so many miles on it and the plugs looked so bad?
@BradleysGarage5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, glad you enjoyed the video. The coils don't necessarily need to be changed unless you are actively getting a misfire code. They are not like the spark plugs which have a predetermined life span. The coils can last well over 100k miles without any issues. If you have the extra money and want to perform a "preventative maintenance" then doing them when you change out the plugs makes a lot of sense. It really comes down to your preference. Good luck on your VW project. Cheers!

What are the specs on the spark plug spacing? Can you do more on this car specifically? Thanks for the video, would love to see more on this car. I’m currently having issues with misfiring. I changed the spark plugs and still having issues maybe it the spacing? If not I read it can be the MAP/MAF being dirty with carbon buildup. Would be amazing if you can do a video on cleaning the MAP/MAF and also a intake manifold replacement if possible 😅… I keep finding tutorials for engines before or after this model. It’s such a pain.

Thanks for the question, pretty much all new spark plugs for a specific application come pre-gapped so there is no need to gap them. But if you would like to check, the factory gap setting for the 1.8 TSI is 0.032". Thanks for the suggestion, we will look into creating some additional content for the the 1.8 TSI Jetta in the future. I would suggest swapping a coil around to a good cylinder to see if the code follows the coil. It could be as simple as that causing your misfire code, especially if you are getting P0301 thru P0304 codes. Let us know how it goes with your VW project. Cheers!

I’m getting codes for all 4 cylinders p0301 - p0304. My car actually turned off on my yesterday while driving. It’s driving me nuts. After a certain speed it’s like the problems go away, but when I come to a stop it starts rocking. And the EPC light goes on.
@BradleysGarage7 ай бұрын
@@MrScarface18o It's very strange for the car to just shut off with these misfire codes. The EPC light comes on with active misfires to warn you that there is a reduction in power and obviously you can feel that in the way that it's running. Can you post all the codes you are currently getting? Any P0351 thru P0354 codes? You said you already changed all the spark plugs, correct? And you have used OEM plugs, either Bosch or NGK? It's very rare to have all the coils go bad at the same time. With all cylinders misfiring, it may be related to a fuel issue. How many miles currently on the Jetta? When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnSsinSDZ9erqZI Let us know, we will try to help get you sorted. Cheers!

@@BradleysGarage my Jetta has about 112,000 miles and I just ran it again and I’m getting p0301-p0304 as well as p2251, p0016 and p05a0. I wasn’t getting these last three. But now I’m even more confused on what the issue can be. Also No I haven’t changed the fuel filter.

I hear everywhere (including chrisfix lmfao) that u dont need anti seize on some modern plugs, and def not on ngk plugs (which i have) should i still do it??
@BradleysGarage22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comments, we have always used anti seize on plugs and never had any issues. You will appreciate it if you every had to remove corroded plugs that ripped the threads out of aluminum cylinder heads. The only concern there may be is to not get any anti seize near the electrode as that may cause an issue with the O2 sensors. Other than that we have been doing it that way for over 40 years now and will keep doing it. Cheers!

What tools are required? I might have to buy some stuff. Also, is the plastic cover necessary to keep on the engine?
@BradleysGarage8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, we posted all the tools needed in the description. The plastic cover is primarily cosmetic, it doesn't have to be present. Tools Needed: Flathead screwdriver (small tip) Hook Tool 10mm socket 3” extension 3/8 ratchet 5/8” spark plug socket Torque wrench Good luck on your VW project Cheers!

Thanks for the question Daniel, we haven't had any issues with our Cam Cover leaking. Apologies we have not made that video but here is video that show the basic overview. It's not the best step by step but it gives you an idea of what it entails. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6arloyIqq2Lj68si=ATGOm46kbaH-D-o9 Here are the basic parts you will need for the job -www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-valve-cover-gasket-kit-genuine-vw-kit-00635 If you want to reuse the bolts you can opt for this less expensive Audi/VW sealant - www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-vw-oil-pan-sealing-compound-50ml-d176501a1 We have used this on many oil pans and cam covers with great success. The sealant above is just too expensive for us. It's also a good idea to replace the PCV Valve seal - www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-gasket-genuine-vw-06k103484b Along with the Timing Cover Gasket - www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-engine-timing-cover-gasket-beetle-jetta-vag-06l103483a And the Camshaft Adjuster Magnet Gasket - www.fcpeuro.com/products/vw-camshaft-adjuster-magnet-gasket-genuine-vw-06l103583c You can go with aftermarket seals/gaskets if you are trying to keep the coasts down. The ground copper connector broke when I took it off can I replace with aluminum?
@BradleysGarageАй бұрын
Sorry to hear that Jake, it would be best to get another spare piece of copper wire and solder it to the existing wire. That way you can ensure you have a solid ground connection and prevent any electrical issues. Good luck on your VW project, let us know how the repair goes. Cheers!

What’s the coil pack firing order
@BradleysGarage28 күн бұрын
Thanks for the question Erica, the firing order for a Jetta with a CPKA engine is 1-3-4-2. This means that cylinder 1 fires first, then cylinder 3, then cylinder 4, and finally cylinder 2. Good luck on your VW project, Cheers!

Would it be the same if I have a 2 L? Volkswagen Jetta.
@BradleysGarage3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, the 2.0L engine layout is very different than the 1.8L. That engine has the intake manifold runners partially blocking the spark plug access. It also does not use coil on plug style and has wires going to each plug. Here is a pretty clear video showing the technique on 2.0L as we do not own a 2.0L car. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWK6nYeueZeem9U Good luck on your VW project. Cheers!

is a torque wrench necessary??
@BradleysGarage8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question, it's not necessary to have a torque wrench, it's just recommended. It will help prevent overtightening the spark plugs into the aluminum cylinder head. They are just a little past snug is what I call it. The most important thing is don't crank them down too much. Good luck on your VW project, Cheers!
