The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 162TSI has been coined as the hot hatch of SUVs. It shares an engine with the outgoing Volkswagen Golf GTI and has enough room for seven passengers on board (it's a 7 seat SUV). But, how practical is it? Paul Maric reviews the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace 162TSI Highline!

Thanks for the review. I bought one primarily based on the driving assistance technology, which is really good and worth demoing in reviews. Had a 2017 Golf previously. Needed to fit 3 kids in. Thought we needed to use the third row but doesn't have teather point for car seats and we managed to fit all 3 kids in the second row. But what sold me was the traffic jam assist which basically means the car can steer you even on some arterial routes and on the motorway will stay within your lane even if not always holding the wheel, although of course you still need to be paying 100% attention. It's assistance, not self driving. Love to see more in each review about how that lane keeping assistance technology works (or doesn't!) in each car. Currently, very few cars seem to do it like VW where it works under 60km/hr. However, Tiguan still doesn't stay in its lane on sharper turns on the motorway at normal speeds. Maybe only Tesla does that at the moment, not sure. I'm not convinced anything is much improved in the new Tiguan, but look forward to seeing reviews. Seems to be the same system with a new name called Travel Assist, with the addition of it slowing you down at roundabouts and on roads with steep turns, but I'm not sure I trust it on roads in New Zealand to do that.

Great video Paul! Love the detail you go into with these! :) I bought a Tiguan R Line 162 for all the reasons you covered in his review. I don't think buying an SUV should mean I'm confined to boring family life. There should be more performance options out there like this for those of us who love driving but want the practicality of an SUV Didn't go the All Space though. I preferred the shorter wheel base to squirt around. I'm one of the few people that has utilized the Individual setting over comfort or sport. I like my steering heavier, suspension sporty but I use the Eco mode for engine performance when getting around town. I also went the Petrol because I do a lot more city driving than country. My average commute to work is 15 minutes and it doesn't exceed 80kmh. I couldn't rationalise the Diesel for the odd trip down south when consumption drops to 7.5-8L/100km.

Hi Chris, I'm looking at a 2019 R Line 162... for all the same reasons you mention & wld likely have the same drive set up. The only possible "con" of the 162 i can recognize is the high fuel consumption (vs diesel) for city / urban travel. Can you pls let me know what consumption figures you're getting around the suburbs? Cheers!
@buckshot904
@buckshot904 2 жыл бұрын
@@paragoncafe Hi BOC, fuel economy isn’t too bad around town. I get 500-550km off a tank of 98 Octane. If I really punch it, 500km, tops. When I did a road trip, consumption dropped to 7-7.5L/100 and I got about 750km from a tank.

Great review - just bought one of these a couple of weeks ago with R-line, sound and vision package and panoramic sunroof. It was down to this or the Sante Fe Highlander which is also a great car. Ultimately it just didn't feel as special even though it does admittedly have more features. The Tiguan is a much better drive of course. BTW, the table on the back of the seat is designed to hold the kids' tablets. That's what the nook at the front of it is for. You also forgot to show how to open the boot with your foot :P

Interesting. I bought a Santa Fe highlander four weeks ago and test drove this Tiguan. I think the Tiguan looks a lot better and actually preferred it but during the test drive there was a crunching sound emanating from the rear axel area that sounded very unhealthy and that scared me off, particularly given VW’s unreliability history. It’s a real shame as I liked the Tiguan very much. The Santa Fe is good though but it doesn’t drive as dynamically and I think I’m going to get bored of it.

They are built on the same platform, although both 2.0t the Kodiaq is down on power ( 30kw ) due to being a higher compression budack cycle motor and also relying on just direct injection where the 162 tiguan has both port and direct injection ( less likely to suffer from carbon build up )

here in my country VW is considered not exceptional in anything but reasonably good in everything. that doesn't apply to most drivers in black golfs and passats - they are exceptionally aggressive (don't know why). anyway, since in my world SUV is meant to go light offroad, I'd prefer comfort (with more rubber) rather than sportiness (and those low-profiles).

I've had my MY20 162 Highline Allspace (fully loaded with R-Line, Sound&Vision and Panoramic Sunroof) for 6 months now. While it is punchy, it's really nothing like a GTI and the gearbox tune is disappointing. We also have a MK7 Golf 110TSI and the DSG in that seems a LOT more responsive. Downshifts for overtaking or coming out of a roundabout etc take an eternity to happen and can be borderline dangerous. I raised this with the dealer and they said that's just how the Tiguan are tuned but is a common complaint. Overall a great car - I'd really love to do an ECU tune in this. The detuned EA888 jumps to well over 200kw and over 400nm with a simple plug in reflash - but say goodbye to your drivetrain warranty. As much as I'd like to - the engines and gearboxes in these are just too expensive to fix if something went wrong.

Thanks for the feedback, Adam. And you're right - a basic tune would totally transform the car fairly easily, at the potential cost of a warranty.

We are looking at one of these and our first thing is getting an apr tune. I wont hesitate, the ea888 is a bulletproof engine. Our 2013 dsg gti has been apr tuned for years now and has not had a single issue. Wouldn't own an ea888 powered vw without a tune.

They have an R model coming! You can see pictures of it here: www.carexpert.com.au/news/2021-volkswagen-tiguan-range-topping-r-on-local-wish-list/ You're right about the 7 seats, it's more a 5 + 2, so they're just occasional use seats.

Great review mate Pulled the trigger and am picking mine up tomorrow morning (not all space). Some things you forgot to mention in the review. Hand gesture for the infotainment, foot wave to open and close boot, panoramic roof you mentioned it doesn’t have one yet is a packaged option (I had to get one 😅). As you mentioned this car is aiming towards the sporty side of suv and that’s exactly what sold it for me. Prefer sporty over luxury any day and what a great option to have being sporty, comfortable with space for a full family.

I dont mind the dct, you get used to it. Ive done some touring and it is confortable enough. It is *sporty* for its size and quick enough, but you are right they could absolutely ditch the *normal mode*. The third row should have been optional imo as it isnt amazing and doesnt have isofix. It is thirstier than the advertised figures! I picked up the sportier version (perhaps delusionally) but i find a lot of *confortable* ones to be a bit numb.

If i have fun i need low, light car with some power and nice handling. If i need space and fun i will go with estate versions. If i want off road capability i will go buy car with good ground clearance (no less than 21-22 cm). So it`s something like Mazda Miata for fun, Some sporty sedan or estate for family and fun, and some Land Cruiser for SUV. Most of modern SUV`s does not make sense does not matter fast, sporty or not.

VolksWegon complains As a customer and owner of Tiguan 2.0 TSI (CBU). Volkswagen a very much well recognised brand globally, here I would like to declare my unsatisfaction of the quality of your vehicle parts and specialisation. I have gone through this endless nightmare for the past 4 years and regret buying a car from Volkswagen. For all the complaints I have made, there were only temporary solutions. The authorised dealers are all keenly busy to sell the parts but do not rectify the real problem faced. 4 years I have been complaining about engine check lights popping up, reverse camera error, Bluetooth error, engine ignition issues, noises from engine, start-up trouble and many more. Volkswagen authorised dealer is only busy changing the parts 1 by 1 and no permanent solution to my problems. Many parts and sensors have been changed again lately, but eventually after a consultation, it's an "Instrument Cluster" fault as a gateway to most of the electronic function which is causing trouble as a silent killer from the day one of my complaints. My Tiguan is well maintained according to the book of service. To my understanding and fellow Volkswagen users globally this is not a common issue and Volkswagen must take the full responsibility for this " Meter " instruments cluster malfunction as this is based on a manufacturing default. It has cost me a lot of my time and hard earned money which has been wasted at your authorised service centre. Compared to the maintenance cost of many other cars, yes, a Volkswagen car is expensive to maintain. This is mainly due to the expensive German parts of the car and due to the high quality fit and finish the car provides. However that does not mean the customer should be left high and dry with a defective product. I feel like I spend more time at your service centre than I do at work or at home. I'm at my wit's end everytime my vehicle is back to the dealership for repairs required because of the malfunction. Very disappointed ☹️

VW is well-known for electrical malfunction and I think anyone goes for European cars should know that parts and service are expensive. I would personally stick with Japanese cars after my close to disaster dealing with Doncaster Volvo; If I want to buy a luxury car, I would go with Lexus, knowing service and initial purchase price are higher than average Japanese cars, but quality is assured and you will see the dealership only when you are having a service and of course when you feel like having your car washed.

I don't know if this one is built in Mexico (the North American version is built here), but here, we have 2 engine options, a 1.4 TSI with 150hp and a 2.0 TSI with 184hp. I can tell you, the 1.4 has a gutless take off acceleration, once it gets going it is OK, but never feels fast. I've driver the 2.0 and it is OK, a bit better than the 2.0, but it also never feels fast, nowhere in the North American continent (Mexico, Canada and USA) do we have the high power version available.

I’m always curious why car prices in Australia are always cheaper than the SE Asia market. While all the cars are imported, is tax there that cheap? Here, Tiguan Allspace is priced at 63.700 AUD equivalent. Not even comes with the R line bodykit, AWD, 2.0 TSI and 20” rims. Not to mention, the car has been assembled semi knock down here (SKD). *Btw, good review as usual Paul! I've followed you since you were in CA.

Before you buy a Tiguan or VW car, read my case below. I am living in New Zealand. A few weeks ago, my TIguan broke down in the car park of Countdown supermarket. I called the Roadside Assist and told them about my situation. The technician told me that my car must be towed back to the garage for repair. You might think that my above experience is nothing special. But what is shocking is that this is the sixth time my car needs repairs in the past four years. The car was really good at first. But from the middle of the first year, problem started. The faults are rear windscreen wiper, a key, reversing camera, car computer, rear LED light and engine malfunction. Fortunately, all repair costs are covered by 5-year warranty (I paid the cost of last two year extension). But now, I am worrying about what will happen in the 6th and 7th year after the five-year warranty expires. I complained to Volkswagen New Zealand about the quality and reliability of the car. Their answers made me even more angry. Carolina Zalazar, Customer Manager. Her attitude seems to tell me that all malfunctions have been repaired within the warranty period. Therefore, they are not responsible for any losses caused to customers due to poor car quality. Her attitude seemed to indicate that no one forced me to buy a car. Unfortunately, I encountered this kind of thing and it has nothing to do with them. Their car quality standards are like that, and their reputation and customer feedback seem to be rubbish to them.
