My wife has just taken delivery of this new model Polo GTI. New colour Smokey Grey, 18” upgrades on the wheels, Beats stereo. She loves it. We swapped it for the previous model on a 19plate, which was well loved too. This version has the 7 speed DSG, which works well with the extra few HP. No longer has the keyless entry and stop start button, but that’s a theft risk apparently. The haptic controls take a while to get to grips with. But do actually work well. Comes with Sat Nav, but useless to us as we had previously been using Apple maps to get about via CarPlay. Other than that……..great car, bulletproof reliability with them, resale value is excellent. Only lost 15% on the old car in 2.5yrs. What else there to say…..go buy one if you don’t need a golf sized car or if funds don’t allow…..

Great short review Andrew. Slight oddity that it's auto only and its true rivals, the Fiesta ST and I-20 N are manual only. On this occasion, it's the Hyundai that gets my vote....
@volkswizard2 жыл бұрын
Me too Colin, got to drive one soon. The fact it allows you to left foot brake in I20N, something that stopped with the Mk4 Golf in 1997 just tells you all you need to know about the effort that's gone into it. Whether it makes it less good at the day to day, I don't know as not driven it but the VW still has the cooler badge and with DSG only is aimed at the urban style conscious non-petrolhead so horses for courses but even without driving it, I20N get's the nod from me

Needed an auto this time round (waiting on op on left knee), so I've got the new Polo GTI on order. Ordered before the price increase and got a decent discount, so nowhere near the £30k I keep see being touted. Not as hard core as either the I20N or Fiesta ST but in some ways better for it (depends on what you want I suppose). The Fiesta ST is now only available as a 5 door and in ST3 spec, so now just over £27k + options. And some kit is now missing (EG. dipping external mirrors). Not like you can actually order one, as the order book on any Focus / Fiesta has been closed for weeks now! The I20N would have been my choice if there was an auto option, but sadly not. Though currently a 12 month wait on a factory order. PS. Coming from an I30N (and previous two cars were Focus ST's).

I've had mine for a couple of months now, Kings red on the uprated alloys, they have contis on them, Really enjoying the car done almost 3k miles, have had a 6r gti and up!gti previously. This is a bit more grown up and sensible, but that's what I want, I drive back roads to work and it's a hoot, got the power I need to take on the tractors and Sunday drivers of the world. Tech is good and its a great drive, its not a golf, but I know that, it's a polo which is the right size and what is affordable for me (new, financed etc) but it's still a gti with tartan seats and plenty of power to make the drive fun!
@volkswizard2 жыл бұрын
When you put it that way, it sounds great Scott. I can see the appeal but I think how you interpret the desirability or otherwise of the VW and/or GTI brands is crucial to how much the Polo appeals rather than its on paper performance and that's just fine as that's true for the way near all cars are desired by buyers.

Your suggestion of a used Golf GTI is spot on. I think VW have tried harder with recent Polo GTIs but still compromised (rear suspension and DSG only) and price rise putting it into Golf territory.
@philly2kuk19852 жыл бұрын
Comment on the cost isn’t true, the base gti might have been 20k in 2018 but this replaces the gti plus. Mine cost £25k in 2020 so it’s still an increase, but not over £7k as this video alludes to. Other than that, don’t really disagree with the review. It is expensive for a polo when it’s rivals are cheaper.

Great video Andrew, I recently looked at a 19 plate GTI, basically because I can’t afford a Golf haha! Didn’t like the red inserts in the dash (GTI + gets grey I think). Love the dash and the seats. Should be a manual option. A lot of people unfairly dismiss these but I think they’re really good, and supposedly similar in size to MK4 Golf

@impy19802 жыл бұрын
I've had my GTI 6 or 7 weeks now and I've really enjoying it, it's lots of fun, I came from a mid range Polo 1.0, damn I hate that 3 cylinder engine - gutless piece of garbage that you had to rag everywhere, and even when you drove it sensible, it wasn't an economical engine, I honestly don't know why VW ditched the 1.2, it was such a good all round engine for the smaller cars. The main 2 reasons I decided to go GTI were I wanted to stay VAG coz I love the DSG, I've only get an auto licence, and the DSG is better than anything else I've driven, but I didn't want the awful 1 litre engine again, and the other was all new cars designed and built from 2022 will have to have a black box recorder factory fitted by law - EU says it's for safety, I'm very much doubting that, I have no desire to be tracked, and there's zero information on who has access to the data, where it's store if there's a downlink, who it'll be sold to, and if it can be accessed remotely, all sorts of unanswer privacy concerns. I understand why the recorder will be in there going forward, as it'll be essential for autonomous vehicles. I agree with you on pretty much everything, the interior isn't bad, it's a slight improvement, but the Mk6 in general was a big improvement over the Mk5 which went backwards with hard cheap plastics, and the chassis compared to the Mk4 was also trash. I still think they could've added soft inserts into the doors with red stitching. I also went with the Iron Grey in the interior, the red just looked too much, too garish in pics, and I thought I'm gonna end up hating it at some point. I'm with you on the King Red, just doesn't quite look right, I went with the Smokey Grey (it has a violet tint to it), and the red parts look real nice against the grey. The styling overall hasn't changed too much, but think the subtle changes and rounder front end is an improvement. The wheels don't bother me too much, but would definitely stick to the 17"s, as I do think on rougher back roads the 18"s are gonna be too harsh. My biggest hate about the whole car, but this is down to VW's software across their range, was the damn lane assist! More specifically by default the car doesn't remember any "last used settings". I can live with the majority of settings going back to default but the lane assist, no, if you forget to disable it and you're going down a narrow road, it will drag the car into the verge as it "corrects" the steering to follow the centre line. I quickly ordered an OBDeleven so I could change the setting so it now remembers the "last setting" that was used, frankly this should be an advanced setting in the default VW software, because as it was, if you forget to turn off lane assist, the car is a danger to occupants. Now, don't get me wrong, on the motorway, lane assist and adaptive cruise control is fantastic, I did a 6 and a half hour round trip to Gatwick and I've never got back home feeling less tired. Fuel efficiency wise compared to my previous 1.0, down the back roads I'm probably down a few MPG, but motorway I'm easily up, I did Manchester today and got 50 mpg, no way would I have got that in the 1.0 coz it would struggle on any sort of incline. Overall I think on a full tank I'm about 10 miles short in the GTI, but that's only an estimate so far, but for the sake of 10 miles, the fun factor more than makes up for it. I know some people aren't happy that the GTI is DSG only, but most people also think it's a conventional automatic box, and it's not, it's more an automated dual clutch manual, once you get use to it, you do have a lot of control over it, and in manual mode, either with stick or paddles you're free to shift sequentially however you like, I've had no issues smash down the box, obviously its never gonna give you the complete freedom of a manual, but you'll still have fun with it. I do agree with hthe general consensus though, if anyone wants a hot hatch and can drive manual, got the i20-N, it looks great, sounds great, and looks fun in reviews, Hyundai have come a long way, I drove an i20 in Australia in 2016, and damn compared to my mk5 Polo it was an awful driving experience, less power, gearbox was horrendous, and interior was worse than basic Skoda. In conclusion, I think you're looking at it the wrong way, I agree if you've had a Golf, stay with a Golf, even if second hand, or you need a little more space. But for me the Polo GTI is for those coming upwards, like me, who's come from the 1.0, in older models I've had a 1.2 and 1.4, and don't wanna either go as big as the Golf or spend as much. Is it a Golf replacement no, is it a Golf experience if you've never owned a Golf, probably yes.

If you are talking about "intelligent speed assist". This only applies to "new" cars seeking "type approval" after July 2022 in the UK / EU. Though it looks like this will apply to "all" new vehicles sold after July 2024. There is a lot of misinformation circulating about this at the moment. PS. I have a new Polo GTI on order myself.

I'd like to give one of these new ones a test drive and see how it compares, the 6C was by far the best platform of Polo GTI but this one has caught my eye. Just a shame about the cost cutting on some materials and paint. Great video as always.

I had an issue with mic on this and the Alpine video so had use audio for the driving from the small mic on side window. The time slots for filming these cars at this event are geared around print journos who just drive and write up later so it's a miracle it turned out as good as it did TBH. I've had issues before with the dB setting being on max which causes distortion but I am using Rode radio mic system with their own broadcast quality lapel mic so can't really upgrade from that. I think the audio in the last video (Cupra on track) was pretty spot on so could be mic position, weather or just my voice but rest assured I am always monitoring it.

I like the fact they've kept the Tartan Seats as an option...as it's a homage back to previous incarnations...something homely about them. It's funny cos, with some more "modern" cars due to coming out later...they do scrimp VW on some things...I mean some 10yr old cars to this day still look modern and have all the aftermarket-entertainment in them and the interiors look better. Seats are more bucketed etc. and they sound and shift equally as good, if not better. It's like companies have gone as far as they can. Dunno what they're gonna pull when it everything turns electric...Hopefully fuel will still be available for all of us whom want to keep our old "fuel cars"....

The fact you can buy a new Polo GTI for the price of a nearly new Golf GTI makes it worthy of comparison. If buyers think they are getting a shrunken Golf GTI, they will be disappointed and I think it's worth making that clear. In my opinion, buyers would be better off buying a used Golf GTI. Save 10k - spend it on wheels that dont corrode due to being diamond cut / proper suspension so it’s not still on stilts / an exhaust so you can disable the fake rattle generator / map it so it makes more power that would match the facelift if the same was done anyway. Spend the change on trying to live off over priced beans. Then maybe actually line the tailpipes up properly and take the dodgy centralised (that doesn’t look central due to the letter shapes) badge off and put it back in the right place.

I bought a 20k miles 7.5 golf gti with many extras for £22k, I know which one I would rather have.

Only a crazy person would choose this over a Fiesta St

comparing this to a current golf is ridiculous, how does it compare to a Mk 4 or Mk 5 Gti?

Its about the same size to start 😅
@WaseemKhan-iu4bh2 жыл бұрын
You're surely trolling?...has pretty much the same engine and gearbox as the latest golf GTI, it's also only about 4 cm narrower and a bit shorter about 15cm so it's not at all that much smaller.

£27 GRAND for a Polo with nasty cheap fabric and nasty cheap plastic interior 😳 WTF!
@mcxix27422 жыл бұрын
Those seats are very unattractive 👎 to me this is a downgrade from the Polo GTI 6C which was a proper hot hatch.
@zakpoulton4352 жыл бұрын
Same seats that were in the 6c.....?
@mcxix27422 жыл бұрын
@@zakpoulton435 nah, I had the 6C & the tartan seats had a much nicer red chequered pattern than this. Similar concept, but much more sporty - these new seats look like a poorly designed picnic blanket

It seems to be, extra, extra, extra with VW, nice review, but the car is too dear🙂

Great review, thank you. The plastic on the back doors is terrible - no cloth at all? Still don't understand the backwards step to touch-sensitive buttons on wheel and climate. And I'm starting to really despise cheap shiny black plastic on car interiors - does anyone think it looks good?
@volkswizard2 жыл бұрын
It is indeed a bit naughty to downgrade trim for rear seat occupants. I think haptic buttons look more modern but they can take some learning. I’m pretty sure they’ll be cheaper too

No manual option is a real downer imo, small hot hatches need to be tactile, chuckable things and a stick really complements that tried & tested blueprint

Great 👍 Car prices are insanely high todays and unless deadly necessary best not to buy a car either new or especially a used one. Also all these ice cars in few years time will worth nothing because fuel prices will go double and or government will limit their use. Basically with this brand new polo gti you won’t be able to visit London anywhere within m25 after 2025 or you should pay £20 to enter. , not ideal.

I'd buy a Polo GTI if were available in the states.
