Sadly this wasn't shown in the OVA for whatever reason, but when Nohebi were trash-talked by some teams that didn't even make it to the final stages of Tokyo prelims, Kuroo actually stood up for them, stressing the fact that their play style is only possible due to their high skills and great defense. It was a really nice touch!

Something that's worth mentioning about this OVA is that they cut a lot of the development for both Lev and Yamamoto, the Tanaka lookalike. In the manga, Yamamoto gets heavily targeted after Yaku is subbed out, and is pretty unstoppable on defense. But because of that, his offense falls off a lot and he is largely stuck on defense, and Lev starts to heavily overshadow him on offense, with audience members mentioning that Yamamoto must be Nekoma's ace in name alone. However, throughout all of that, Lev is starting to realise what Yamamoto meant earlier in the series when he said that someone who can't handle defense isn't worthy of being Nekoma's ace. And then it all culminates in Yamamoto making a great pass from a really awkward position after Lev sorta bungles a block, and then he calls for the set from Kenma and turns around perfectly transitioning onto offense and crushing the ball, cementing himself as Nekoma's ace in both the readers' and Lev's eyes. It's a chapter that turned Yamamoto from a character I didn't care about, and who was pretty much a Tanaka clone, into his own independent character and one of my favourites in the entire series.

Hey coach, about the slot for Nekoma, they actually do have to win to be in that slot. The game between Nohebi and Nekoma was to decide the team for that slot. The reason for that slot being called Venue sponsor representative is because Tokyo, where Nekoma is from, is the host of the Nationals tournament, therefore the city/prefecture get to add another slot for another team (other than the 2 top representatives like you see in the ova), and in this case Nekoma beats Nohebi to take that spot.

It’s called “path of the ball” because of the way Lev understands that teamwork is better than individual plays. Instead of always trying to read the attack and block the ball, he makes sure to block one path and leave a path open for the ball to get received by the subbed in libero. That’s why it’s called “path of the ball” because the players are controlling where the ball goes.

Hi Coach Donny! Sorry for being so late but I'd like to mention a few tidbits about the behind the scenes of Haikyu animation production (SPOILER FREE) 1.Haikyu S1-3 were a continuous production, which means S3 was planned even before S1 aired. These 3 seasons were animated by the same core staff and hence everything looks so consistent. 2.S4 on the other hand, was announced 3 years later because in 2016 when S3 was airing, there was not enough manga chapters (source material) left to be converted to an anime. Thus an entirely new team of staff was created and the character designs were tweaked a little bit(reduced no of lines and the shadows) to match the style of the new animators. This happens quite often as due to the low wages and labour shortages in Japan, the animators are generally booked 3-4 months in advance at a particular time and it is extremely difficult to assemble the same OG staff for another project, as they are likely busy working on something else. 3.It is very, very unlikely that a single animator is working on a full 20 minute episode, let alone a whole season. More often than not, there are 10-20 "key animators" who draw the key frames of 1 or 2 cuts of varying duration ( generally 20s to 1 min) and there are other groups of "2nd key animators" and "inbetweeners" who draw in between the key frames to take the total fps count to what the director/producer wants. So when the quality of an episode feels sub-par, it is not because some animator has fallen ill or something but due to a conscious decision taken by the director to funnel their time and resources to more important scenes which would require more frames per second. Btw, this is just for drawing the rough movements of the characters. Colouring, shot composition, camerawork, dubbing, cgi/vfx (if needed) and editing are handled by a completely different part of the production pipeline. For eg, most of the times, the entire background work is subcontracted to some other studio who specialise just in that regard. To give you an example why this is the case, it takes Hayao Miyazaki a full month to draw just one minute of footage for his new movie that he is working on (which is a passion project and hence he is doing almost all of the work). But in case of commercial projects, producers require the animation studios to churn out 12 episode-seasons in just 1.5 years. Not to mention, studios are generally working on 2-3 projects at the same time just to stay in business. 4.A standard anime generally has 3000-4000 key frames per episode. But since Haikyu deals with a sport (volleyball) where not only are there at least 12 players constantly moving on the court but also where technical aspects such as posture, position, timing, perspective, etc can play an important role, the total no. of key frames required to be drawn per episode becomes 2x-3x the normal. What's worse is all this is expected from the staff without any significant increase in budget or production time. 5.Haikyu's animation quality, I assure you Coach, is definitely not the 'norm'. To maintain such high level of consistency and fluidity for 24-25 episodes at a stretch at a time when even 12 episode-anime regularly run into production problems towards the end is something that is enjoyed by very few shows. Even S4, whose already tight schedule was massively impacted by statewide lockdown in Japan due to the pandemic, still looks better than 80% of the shows coming out of the industry nowadays. We Haikyu fans are very lucky! PS: If anyone wants to go much more in depth about the production of Haikyu, I would HIGHLY recommend them to go through this blog - (S4 SPOILER FREE) blog.sakugabooru.com/2020/02/04/the-evolution-of-haikyuus-exceptional-production-refining-reality/

coach, the reason why kenma took charge is because he is the “brain” of the group. before nekoma starts matches, if you remember, they chant, “we are like blood in veins. we must keep the oxygen flowing so the ‘brain’ can do its job.” or anything along those translations. they are referring to kenma when they say the “brain” and talking about his strategies, while “keep the oxygen flowing” refers to the team supporting kenma with great receives and such.

About Kenma, it's already been shown during Karasuno and Nekoma's practice match back in season 1 and even in the part 1 of this OVA, but Kenma actually acts as the main tactician/strategist for Nekoma while the coach only comes in when necessary, much like how the Aoba Johsai players strategize by themselves and the coach only gives input when he deems it necessary. It's really amazing, esp when you think abt how heavy seniority weighs in Japanese society and Kenma is only a 2nd yr. But his performance speaks for itself, and you can see all his teammates respect/follow his tactics without question.

They cut out a lot of Nohebi tactics used in the manga. I remember I was a lot more frustrated at their team whilst reading it. There were instances of them "buttering up" the ref. If I remember correctly, one of their player touched the net when jumping for a block which is a foul, then as soon as they heard the whistle they shouted "I touched it" and bow to the ref to apologize. These tactics accumulated/culminated in one of those block-vision calls where the ref at the back called it in Nohebi's back court, but the ref in the center overruled and called it out (point for nohebi instead) After watching this episode I'm actually not disappointed that they didn't include those scenes. So we don't hate them too much? Haha If i'm making sense. We saw enough of their cheeky tricks. Since it's an OVA I understand. It's also a way for us to don't mind the main guy of that team later on in the series. But I would react different if it wasn't an OVA. If it was a normal episode of the season I would have loved a long match with them. Considering the pacing of first half of S4 is kinda..... But I also don't mind it since they are training. I love how proud Yaku and Shibiyama are to be Liberos on a team that is highly focused on defense. I every time I watch this episode, I always feel like Shibiyama should be very confident in his abilities because almost every player on Nekoma would be an excellent Libero on the majority of the other teams we’ve seen. I also love how Kuroo’s advice to Lev about teamwork has the same energy and emotion as the advice Bokuto gave to Tsuki way back in season 2 that came from personal experience. I think it shows that Kuroo probably struggled in a similar manner to connect with Yaku, especially since they didn’t necessarily “get along” as 1st years. 3:45 in Japan students are each assigned to a homeroom class. they stay in the same classroom all day & the teachers are the ones that rotate around. so class 1-3 is the third group of first year students, class 1-5 is the fifth group of first-year students, class 2-3 would be the third group of second-year students, and so on. some Japanese high schools have special classes for advanced material, college prep, or subject focus. for example, Yachi is in class 1-5, which is confirmed to be an advanced/college prep section, while Kageyama and Hinata are in regular class sections. I am thinking of making a team who can have a match against your team, oo that is fun to think of. Ok let's see Libero: Yaku (No second thought necessary, nishinoya level and even greater than him till season 2 atleast) Setter: Oikawa (the great king and he will be the captain + Oikawa vs ushijima and kageyama, all the emotional stakes will just fire up all three of them) Now, for the remaining positions, you have taken all the best guys - ushijima, asahi, hinata, kuroo and aone. This will be tough Outside hitters: Bokuto (well technically - he is the only one strong enough to break through kuroo and aone, mentally and emotionally - first he will be going up against Ushijima and kuroo, he will be fired up, next I think Oikawa has the skills, smarts and EQ to deal with Bokuto's emo mode, Oikawa bringing the best out of Bokuto will be a strong combination), out of Tanaka/Mad dog/ Iwazumi/Daichi - hmm, I want defense against Ushi and asahi, so I will go with exp, Iwazumi and Daichi. So yeah Bokuto, Daichi, Iwazumi are my hitters. Middles: Tendo (I think he can handle ushijima and asahi, but it will get difficult when hinata joins them) Tsukki (well we all know what he can do against ushijima and he knows hinata and asahi very well) SO, Oikawa(C), Bokuto, Daichi, Iwazumi, Yaku, Tendo, Tsukki vs Ushijima(C), Kageyama, Asahi, Hinata, Nishinoya, Kuroo, Aone This will be a fun battle. What do you think?? by the way, my starting 7 would be - Oikawa(C), Ushijima, Bokuto, Hinata, Nishinoya, Kuroo, Aone

Getting in another comment about the Tokyo representatives: Nekoma isn't the automatic representative. Tokyo is hosting the nationals so they get to send a third one apart from their usual two. So whoever gets third in the tournament gets to play. That's why the match between Nekoma and Nohebi was important, because that determines which team gets to go.

Hey coach! I just wanted to say that in season 4 while there are times where the animation is lacking because of timing and budget restraints, there are also others where the animators are taking a lot of creative freedom to emphasize emotion or movement by changing character models. And I see these clips taken out of context a lot as some of the "bad" animation in season 4. I just really appreciate these animators taking these risks and want ya to watch out for it to!

Ushijima: He's one of my favorite characters and probably the most obvious pick for any team. Oikawa: Another one of my favorite characters. Seeing him and Ushiwaka play on the same line up is like a dream. Yaku: Very underrated libero with great course reading skills, and even Nishinoya compliments his abilities at length. Also I don't need Nishinoya to dig Ushijima since Ushijima is on my team. Kuroo, Tsuki: Two great blockers who synergize very well together because of their complimentary blocking style as well as good chemistry off the court. Tsuki doesn't have an amazing relationship with a lot of people, but Kuroo is one of the few he gets along with. Daichi, Tanaka: For my last two hitters I went with a similar concept of wanting to pick two people who we know work well together. I could have picked stronger hitters aside from Ushijima but I thought it might be interesting to go with a strategy similar to Shiratorizawa where Ushijima handles most of the offense. Daichi is there to improve defense and Tanaka brings mental consistency to the game. Someone like Bokuto might get bored on this team, and I think I value Tanaka's mental consistency through season 3.
@oEllery
@oEllery 3 жыл бұрын
Honorable mentions Leon: We know he works well with Ushijima, probably has better offense than Daichi or Tanaka, and is a solid defender as seen in season 3. Suguru: The main guy from Nohebi. He has an incredible ability to follow and understand the game of volleyball, but I was worried that I might be giving him too much credit from his role as a commentator in the Nationals arc. Willing to do whatever it takes to win, and wouldn't mind taking the backseat role and letting Ushijima be the ace. He also has good technical skills and is solid on offense and defense. I just think it would be really interesting to see what he could do to support an offense led by Ushijima and Oikawa.

Btw, Path of the Ball is a play on "the way of the ball (like how kendo is "the way of the sword" and karatedo is "the way of karate") and also the literal course/path the ball takes, like going from the spiker's hand and past Lev's block and straight to Shibayama, etc. There's an emphasis on it because Nekoma is known for their ability to keep the ball in play (aka keep it moving on its path).

The first and second representative of Tokyo is actually the ones that didn't need to win to be in the Nationals. They just fought for the first and second place but both are already qualified. Nekoma and Nohebi are competing for the "bonus" slot for the nationals, which was the venue sponsor representative. So like, Nohebi fought Itachiyama, Itachiyama won, securing their slot for the nationals. Nekoma fought Fukurodani, Fukurodani won, securing their slot in the nationals. The losers in both qualifier matches, Nohebi and Nekoma, had one more chance to be in the nationals because of the venue sponsor slot.

I recently thought about my starting 7 for Haikyuu so this was a good time, haha: - Outside: Takeru (smart/adaptable), Iwaizumi (also good at blocking, good dynamic with Oikawa) - Opposite: Ushiwaka, predictable but strong - Setter: Oikawa, could have better team chemistry than Kageyama - Middle: Kuroo (best blocker), Tendou - Libero: Yaku (Nishinoya might not have fun playing with this team) I realize all of these people are 3rd years, so it would only be viable for one season and probably make the next season's team have an uphill battle as they adjust to becoming the regulars, but we're ignoring that. Everyone except Takeru has another personal dynamic I think works out, and the personalities are a mix of stoic, snarky, and generally amicable. I think this team just has high utility, and I think Kuroo and Tendou can both run middle quicks? That's important to me lol.

There are usually two spots for teams from the Tokyo prefecture to get to nationals, so 1st and 2nd place of the qualifiers. But, whichever prefecture is hosting the tournament also gets an extra slot, which will go to third place in the qualifiers. The match Nekoma just played was the bronze medal match, both loses of their semi final matches playing for third place finish. So it was important for Nekoma to win, the winner of that match would come in third place for the qualifiers and claim the final spot to go to nationals.

The fact Coach Donny choose Hinata for his starting 7 when he hasn't watched season 4 speaks well of our beloved Tiny Giant. I'm not a volleyball expert but sounds fun doing this. My staring 7 be like: -Setter: Oikawa. Wild leadership but reliable. Great instincts but also can be very analytical. -Opposite hitter: Ushijima. Everything Coach Donny said. Plus, he's lefty like me. -Outsite hitter: Takeru. Hard to block. He knows how motivate his team. Ushijima and him on the same side of the net and even Aone would have a hard time blocking them. -Middle: Kuro. Eveything coach Donny said. Might be my choice for captain. -Libero: Noya boy. Karasuno has good hitters, a good blocker, arguably the best setter but definitely has the best libero. No one else has his hunger to win. -2nd middle: Tsukki. Very analytical player. Good hitter, decent passer, awesome blocker. Younger than Kuro and can developt his skills by practice with him. -2nd Outside Hitter: Tanaka. Good mental fortitude, reliable, good passer. He just need to work his serve. After watching Haikyuu for second time I think he might be the clutchest player of Karasuno. He's always there on critical rallies.

Here's my starting 7 season 1-3 Opposite hitter: Ushijima - As Coach put it, this is a obvious one. He's the most reliable and dominant player we've seen so far. I'd even go as far to say he's the best hitter we've had season 1-4. Setter: Kageyama - Again, seems like a obvious choice. He's the most talented setter so far and he's really competitive. Libero: Watari (Seijoh's libero) - He's a really underrated libero imo. He has great defense but most of all he's the best at setting from all the libero's we've seen so far (due to probably having played setter before). Even Nishinoya recognized he was very skillful when he first played against him. Middles: Kuroo - Basically what Coach said. Even though Nekoma is a more defensive minded team and Kuroo himself is a great defensive player, he's also one of the best attacking middles so far (apart from Hinata); Tsuki - Although Aone is more of a defensive presence that him, I think Tsuki's ability to set the wall's tempo is more important. Basically Aone can do a lot alone, but Tsuki can make the whole team defend better. Also Tsuki is really good with his tips, which makes him a decent option in offense Outside hitters: Tanaka - I know this is a weird pick but hear me out. While Tanaka isn't by any chance the most gifted player we've seen so far, he's the most mentally strong one. He performs really well under pressure and he's a spring of energy to any team. Even Ukai said that he was the "mental MVP" against Shiratorizawa. And skill wise he's not bad really. He has an amazing line hit and he's a better passer than Asahi. In a team with someone like Ushijima, I don't think we need another big strong hitter; Takeru (Wakutani's captain) - I know this might be a hot take, but going into season 3 Takeru is still a better version of Hinata. Sure he's not as fast and he doesn't quite jump as high as Hinata but he's stronger than him and skill wise he's the better player. And he's a master at tooling off the block. Mentally wise he has shown to be a leader which he's to be expected of a captain (tbf most captains in Haikyuu are amazing). Special addition Serve specialist: Oikawa. I just wanted to add Mr."K-pop" in this team 😂 jokes aside, Oikawa is one of the best servers we've seen. And in my opinion he's more reliable than Yamaguchi. He can hit short but his bread and butter is his jump serve. The power and accuracy on that serve is just unreal.

3:45 The 1-3, 1-4, 1-5 are their homeroom classes numbers. They are meant to be read as "1 dash 3," "1 dash 4," and "1 dash 5" usually meaning "floor 1, room 3/room 4/room 5." Typically the different grade levels, sophomore, junior, senior, are called 1st years, 2nd years, and 3rd years, and they would separate them via the physical elevation of the school. 1st years would have their classes on the bottom floor and the 3rd years would have theirs on the highest level. The room numbers are meant to tell which class is their homeroom class. In Japan, it is usually the teachers that rotate through the different classrooms, not the students. The students will sit in their same classroom all day, not including lunch, and so they will sometimes mention what their homeroom number is since it is less likely for the students to see each other if they are not in the same homeroom. btw, i'm only qualified to say that this is probably about 80ish% correct as i'm only going off of my own passing knowledge of the Japanese school structure.

Seasom 1-3 Kageyama is a great Setter but I dont see him utilizing his hitters to their potential compare to oikawa. Oikawa can run a stable offense at each tempo, be aggressive, serve and play defense at a consistent level. Reason why I went with Nakashima as the second outside due to his ability to score points other than smacking it straight down. His ability to tool and wipe the block will come in handy when the others hits are getting dug up. Hinata and kags are coming off the bench for me.

For me yaku was better than noya , yaku was an extreme skilled libero , maybe because he have more experience than noya or something , but he clearly got better court observance than noya he still can predict the ball for perfect receive even when his view was blocked by his teammates

Coach, just to remember that season 3 have 10 episodes and time to prepare and work, but season 4 has 27 episodes(with the OVAs) so the budget was not that good, 12 episodes we're made during the pandemic , please have that in mind when you're reacting

Just to finish, the actual animation for season 4 its actually good, its just that the 3rd season was in another leavon due to the bufget to only 10 episodes, but haikyuu fans sometines are actually annoying so thwy will say like its the worst animation in the world, when actually is pretty good, animators in japan dont make the amount of money they should even if they job its almost like slavery, they receive hundreds of death threats when some season of anime its not like the fans expect

about the proportions, thats kind of furudate sensei style, (s)he doesnt want to do realistic bodies, and the animators did a really good job taking that to the actual anime

Coach before I watched the video and saw in the comments that you have Hinata on your team and was pretty confused. But you put him as an outside not a middle which actually makes so much more sense. On the team I'd have who I think are in the top 3 overall players: Ushijima as opposite, and Kageyama as setter. I feel like I really don't have to explain why, their level of play is just incredible. I'd use the same middles as you, we've never seen a blocker as dominant as Aone, and Kuroo (C) is brilliant and consistent. Libero I'd have Yaku, only because Nishinoya called him amazing, but I'm sure you could swap them around. My outsides would be Asahi, and Bokuto, both incredible power hitters with great jumps. Bokuto has better technique, but Asahi would be able to fill in the gaps for Bokuto when he's off his game. Hmmm, actually I wouldn't want to deal with Bokuto's mood swings so I'd prefer Goshiki - for a first year he's shown some great hits in the Shiratorizawa match, and wasn't too shabby at receiving either. I really wanted Oikawa on the team, maybe as an outside since he a great hitter, and his experience would be invaluable, but I don't think he'd want to play anything but setter. So, Kuroo (C), Ushijima, Kageyama, Aone, Yaku, Goshiki, and Asahi vs Kuroo, Ushijima, Kageyama, Aone, Nishinoya, Hinata, Asahi. Serve receive will be important as my team has 5 jump servers. It'd be a close match but I think my team would win as Hinata is a liability in any defensive position, he could maybe work as an opposite but no way you'd want to swap out Ushijima for Hinata. Also, Hinata's spiking still has room to grow as well as he's only just begun being able to play against blocks (everything to do with hitting off the block).

Coach, Kenma fills the role the same as Oikawa with their respective teams. Nekoma and Aoba Josai are known for their maturity that's why their coaches can take a step back and let them think for themselves and only intervene in some special cases.

My Starting 7: Setter- Oikawa (Oikawa knows how to bring out the best in each of his teammates.. He can unleash their potential and can reach great lengths for himself in doing so) Middle: Kuroo, Tsukki (Kuroo is undoubtedly the best middle blocker and we have seen it in S2 practice camps as well how he encourages tsukki and guides him... Tsukki has shown his potential in S3 and now he has had his moment and is hooked to volleyball.. who knows what wonders this guy can bring.. now that he is hooked ) Opposite Hitter: Ushijima (Let's just say that having oikawa set for ushijima is like his dream come true.. Clearly The setter of shiratorizawa was not highly skilled and the whole team was very dependent on ushijima.. But with oikawa it is different.. he can bring the best in each hitter.. which would also benefit the team) Outside Hitter: Bokuto, Iwaizumi ( I wanted to put Hinata as well.. but if i had to choose between hinata and bokuto.. it's gonna be Bokuto.. both of them are childlike so only one of them could fit in.. plus oikawa cannot do the crazy sets that hinata craves for.. Iwazumi as the other outside hitter.. his recieves are also good.. and considering the bond he shares with the setter and how maturely he handles everything and how he keeps oikawa in check.. he would be a great addition in the team as he could keep our bokuto and oikawa in check since we don't have akashi to do so) Libero: Nishinoya (no explanation needed for him..)

I think oikawa was suit better with yaku , yaku was an extreme skilled libero , in my opinion even better than nishinoya because yaku got more experience than nishinoya , yaku was clearly got better court observance and almost every dig he did was perfect receive right into the setter since u mention kuroo and ushijima that would dominate most of the court they will need libero that have really really good court observance that can still dig even when his view was blocked by his teammates

Hi Coach, nice reaction as always! The Fat bird you liked is actually Hinata 😅 the orange hair (kageyama will be the other bird) hahaha and the cats are kenma and kuroo 😅 you're going to see these animals a lot as they symbolize their respective teams. Speaking of animals, Nohebi is represented by a snake and it's interesting cause the captain has snake like features and their gamestyle is also quite snake like 😅 as for Nekoma, remember in season2 they've been portrayed as smoot cats that can do well on defense, I'm not sure if the new animators were able to portray it well but that's their style of playing too. As for KENMA, he is the brain of Nekoma so the coach allows him to call the shots or make the gameplan. The coach does end up calling him out when he, himself, slacks off if you remember back in their training camp 😆 So you're going to see their competitors focus on Kenma (being the brain) a lot, because it's already known that the whole Nekoma team can defend

My starting 7 for season 1-3 is: Opposite: Ushijima Setter: Oikawa Outside: Bokuto, Asahi Middle: Kuroo(Captain), Aone Libero: Yaku I went with Oikawa over Kageyama is because he has a stronger serve and his hands while worse than Kageyama’s are Oikawa still good enough for this team. I also think that Oikawa would be better at controlling Bokuto than Kageyama. I chose Yaku over Noya bc of his defensive positioning skills. While Noya is a better setter this team could score out of system really easily. Both Yaku and Noya have similar ball control skills and Noya probably has a faster reaction speed but Yaku is better at read hitters and being where he needs to be on court.

My starting 7 from seasons 1-3 (I know it's not the best but I wanted to do something different) Opposite: Ushijima Setter: Akaashi Libero: Yakku Middles: Aone, Tsukki Outsides: Bokuto, Iwaizumi I don't think you can pick anyone else for the opposite, Ushijima is the best player in the series so far I picked Akaashi because he's the only setter who can handle Bokuto's personality, and he's a pretty good setter, I would say he's easily a top 5 in his position

Im going to assume that its called "Path of the ball" due to the storyline being centered around the liberos, middle blockers and defense. The turning point being Lev being able to finally control the "path of the ball" into Shibayama.
