Adam's guess is accurate. The author modeled Shiratorizawa after Tohoku High School, very famous private school in Miyagi prefecture. He traces and draws their real buildings. They have produced many elite athletes. Figure skater Shizuka Arakawa and Yuzuru Hanyu won the gold medal in Olympic Games. Yu Darvish is an active pitcher in the NLB. Volleyball player Taishi Onodera is expected to win a medal as a member of TEAM JAPN at the Paris Olympics. He is the best blocker in Japan.

I am SO SO GLAD that Adam pinged it right away that Ushijima wasn't malicious in any way, and was just stating straight facts. He doesn't care for tact or beating around the bush. While that could be a flaw and come off as very rude sometimes, I don't recall ever hearing him saying true and also malicious things to others. You'll see more as you progress, but this initial assessment of him is so good!

So the thing Ushijima said about Seijoh not being anything without Oikawa is that he's not incorrect. In the practice match where Oikawa was hurt and couldn't set, Karasuno beat them without Noya, Asahi, and Ukai, AND after essentially forfeiting the first set because of Hinata's nerves. He definitely wasn't trying to be a jerk, but he's not particularly concerned about how others will receive what he has to say. Having said that, Hinata and Kageyama had the PERFECT response, and Ushijima definitely has them on his radar now if that smile he had at the end was any indication. Edit: I should clarify that I personally do not think that Seijoh's other players are "weak" necessarily, but the difference Oikawa's setting makes is undeniably drastic.

I think part of it was also that without Oikawa, the team had no real direction on the court. Oikawa is not just excellent at setting, he directs everyone like a conductor does an orchestra, making sure they know what to expect on defense and are getting the best plays run for them on offense.
@alyssacooper6553
@alyssacooper6553 9 ай бұрын
This is exactly it. Without Oikawa they absolutely struggle. Sarah has said it in the past - liberos and setters are similar in the sense that a good setter/libero can make a average team soar, and a bad setter/libero can make a great team suffer. Frankly, with the addition of Noya, Asahi, and Ukai...if Seijoh had any other setter it probably would've been an easier match for Karasuno than their match against Date Tech, because Hinata would've had his nerves under control by then and Kageyama wouldn't have been thrown off with the mind games

Shiratorizawa is based on Tohoku high school, which, if memory serves, is a private high school in Sendai (where the later rounds of the prelims take place). Team Japan's Onodera Taishi is a graduate, and he recalled having a manga artist come to their school for research in his 1st-2nd year, and then later they all heard about Haikyuu and were very excited to try and guess who the players were based on. And Kageyama did specifically mention failing to get into Shiratorizawa in S1! In his first conversation with Hinata at Karasuno, and then right before Nishinoya appeared.

@@adamschulz9475 you're right! The author's amazing research skills are something that's praised most often by their editors; they take it very seriously and are incredibly thorough. The first ever break they took from Haikyuu was about 6-7 years after it started (it was a weekly manga, so they had to draw ~18-19 pages every week), and that break was for a research trip as well.

I’m pretty sure, in Japan, most schools that have strong sports teams are private schools, and they even scout for good players. And naturally, haikyuu reflects that by having 2 of the best teams in the prefecture, Aoba Johsai & Shiratorizawa, be private schools.

Shiratorizawa is basically the equivalent of a major Sports Academy here in Canada. It produces star athletes from the entire region for pretty much any major sport. In these schools its also pretty common for star alumni to donate to the school to keep the prestige of the academy going, so that explains why the compound is so state of the art.

If I remember correctly, Kageyama did apply for the Shiratorizawa and took the entrance exam because he didn't receive an unconditional offer from Shiratorizawa. He failed the entrance exam because he is only good at volleyball but not studying... which is also the reason why he is one of the four who are highly likely to fail the final exams in the end. a fun fact, in "Haikyū!! Final Guidebook Volleyball Climax! ", the author marked Kageyama's brain/IQ with 5/5 and said this number only relates to the ability in terms of volleyball but nothing else🤣

" A tall tall wall loooms infront of me, What's the view on the other side?" is a quote used in the 1st season first episodes too and hinted through out Haikyuu. It's so poetic as it represents the literal 'wall' to overcome such as high blocks, But also the metaphorical 'wall' that a player must climb to get better at volleyball i.e. skills, experience, genetics (height), game intelligence. This story is about a boy who wants to see the brighter side, the open net, the freedom you feel. He has to go many tribulations i.e. being a bad passer, being told you are not good enough, being told you are short, being told you are inexperienced, getting blocked, shanking, even mesh in a team environment just to see the glimpse of the 'other side'. Its a beautiful journey that he finds that he doesn't have to do it alone, its a team sport, and things like running a decoy can help his team mate overcome that 'tall tall wall', and vice versa his setter or team's passing helps HIM be set up for success to overcome that 'wall'. Both literal and metaphorical sense. You find that each season, he seems more and more over the 'other side', earlier seasons its just glimpses... and eventually he has full field of view of the whole court and its shown to be visually bright/beautiful which an amazing cathartic feeling. It's also expressed in later seasons (not really spoiler) that 'Freedom' is being able to do anything in the court, having the skills to set difficult situations, having the skills to pass difficult balls, having the skills to divert blocks or block out, the skills to funnel blocks. 'Freedom' is being skilled. 'Freedom' is having options. 'Freedom' is when you've accumulated all this skills, experience, game intelligence to finally over come this 'tall tall wall' that 'looms' over you. Its amazing.

His final piece that he learned in Brazil is also being able to view himself from the opponents perspective, the view from the other side which made him a monster at predicting what his opponent will do, beach volleyball with two people means he have to do everything to cover the whole court rather than with a whole team, which means he must be able to know where the ball is going

Its underrated, but I really love the first small training match Karasuno has with itself here. This was a throwaway page in the manga with a couple of panels of Karasuno in motion with Ukai worrying if they had enough experience. The animation team turned this into one of the best animated game sequences in the show, right out of the gate. The first play we see in the whole of season 2. Its almost like a wordless promise: this is what you're looking forward to, but its also almost a moment of joy. Look how much better we've gotten. And it slaps.

6:40 I think the practice scene was partly for the audience to give them a full glimpse of what volleyball CAN look like. As the audience's knowledge grows and gets accustomed to the movement, they can keep track and appreciate the more advanced parts of the game. However, Hinata is fairly presumptuous. Any rookie coming to a veteran and saying "I'm coming for that ass" would feel pretty disrespectful. We're rooting for him to do it, of course, but Ushiwaka is entirely justified in being like "You gotta make it to me first".
@DWargs

In my opinion, Ushijima is just as blunt as can be. Matter-of-fact, it is what it is, calls it like he sees it. And I mean, look, Ushijima's been beating down Oikawa's teams since they were in junior high. The fact that Ushijima still recognizes and respects Oikawa's talent tells me that Ushijima isn't just cocky and he's not letting that success go to his head, and that he may actually have a pretty solid grasp on the overall level of skill on Seijoh. It just so happens that he has a higher standard because he's been to Inter-High and the Spring Tournament, and he's on the Youth National team. He's seen the best of the best in Japan at their age group, and Oikawa would be the only player from Seijoh considered around that tier. And I mean, I think it's a fair statement. Look at the other teams we've seen so far. You can grab players from Karasuno, Date Tech, and Nekoma, and upgrade that Seijoh squad at every position except for Oikawa and maybe Iwaizumi. That being said, the fact that Ushijima has such a high standard makes it way cooler when you realize that Ushijima was getting pumped up at the possibility of playing against Kageyama and Hinata. Hinata and Kageyama wanted to scout Ushijima out, but throughout the whole encounter, _he_ was scouting _them_ out too. By the end of the conversation with Hinata and Kageyama, Ushijima is listing off their athletic traits, and you could see him getting visibly riled up and excited. He's impressed by what he's seen from them and he's like "Okay. I see you. Bring it on."

Fun soundtrack fact! The name of the music at 23:47 where Kageyama and Hinata step foot on Shiratorizawa's campus is called "Confrontation With The King." A lot of people think it's [REDACTED]'s theme, but I think it's extremely telling of Ushiwaka's abilities that it first plays when the freak duo has their first run-in with him. I think that even if Hinata doesn't know exactly how strong is Shiratorizawa's team, they have a good image of it (though I guess he does know at least a bit about them). Seijoh has gotten second place in regionals and despite losing against Shiratorizawa these 3 years, they've been a consistent team that did not get absolutely wrecked by them anyways. Also, Ushijima is one of the best sub18 spikers in Japan, and has been scouted by the national team, which Hinata knows. That's why he inmediately focuses on the training camp after talking to Ushijima, because he knows he (and also the team) need to earn experience by playing against good teams to get better. Btw, the concrete analogy sounds amazing to me when applied to Hinats. He's like a wild plant growing in the crevices of cracked concrete. He didn't have a team before and he had to persevere during three years, learnint what he could and still driven by an insane hunger of volleyball. He hasn't been nurtured and had little experience with volleyball matches until recently, but even if the conditiond aren't the best, he manages to take everything he can to keep growing like wild plants do

Kageyama's motive for choosing Shiratorizawa as his preferred school was that during his time at Kitagawa Daiichi, he got into trouble with his teammates and became isolated, so he didn't go to Aoba Josai, where most of his former teammates enrolled.This is also related, but the biggest motive is Kageyama. I think it's because my grandfather, whom I respect so much, was a graduate of Shiratorizawa. Since he was a child, Kageyama had heard from his grandfather that Shiratorizawa was the strongest in the prefecture.

They really need to watch the dub also. Its so good!! I love how hinata in the dubs says "im shoyo hinata from the korasuno parking lot!" I fell like in english that makes more of an impact because theyre crows.

it was stated that Kageyama tried to get into Shiratorizawa in early part of season 1. forgot the episode number but it was when they were walking in a group after practice. he failed the entrance exam because he's not good at studying and they made fun of him being only smart with volleyball.

There's something very sweet about Hinata's standing up to Ushiwaka as a response to hearing him dismiss Seijoh. As Kageyama says, Hinata usually gets intimidated by bigger players really easily: in season 1 Aone briefly LOOKED at him and he practically teleported to hide behind Tanaka. But he's indignant on behalf of a team that has beaten him and that he thinks of as really strong, even though part of why he thinks that is lack of exposure, and that is part of what pushes him to assert himself (and Karasuno as a whole). Other things: Adam, right before the episode started, saying something like "I wonder if we're going to see any practice this season" made me cackle, particularly since we then open with their training montage and the promise of training camp. Also, I'm having war flashbacks at Sarah's mention of stadium sprints up the stairs. Sometimes I regret giving up training after college, and then I remember those stairs.

Eyyy!!! In my opinion one of the best and most underrated episodes!!! I think on my first time through this was the first moment where I truly *got* that Kageyama is, basically, introverted Hinata. Prior to this, I'd kind of bought into the idea that because he's prideful and extremely talented, he must also be competent/a smart guy. And he's... Really not. He's just as empty-headed and obsessive as Hinata is! And the only reason that isn't obvious is because he's too naturally quiet to yell the silly dumbass thoughts that he still definitely has! But then sometimes, (especially when he's competing with Hinata) like the race up the hill where they're yelling their lungs out and completely oblivious to their surroundings because they *have* to win, it really comes out just how beautifully empty-headed he is, and just how like Hinata in that he is 😅 Also, "I'm Hinata Shoyo. From the concrete." is my favourite line in the show!

Hinata looks up to Seijoh, which makes sense because he tried his best and still lost to them, so he took offence when Ushiwaka put down the whole team, but on the other hand, Oikawa has been losing to Ushiwaka for probably 6 years running at this point (3 in middle school and 3 in high school) so it's hard to critique him on that point. Hinata has played against Seijoh once (twice if you count the practice match) while Ushiwaka has played them at least 10 or 11 times by now (assuming Oikawa's team was never eliminated before facing him), I would put more stock on Ushiwaka's evaluation of the Seijoh team than Hinata's.. fresh first impressions.

It was curious to me that so often during the season 1, the conversation of the difference between a mediocre setter vs a great setter has on the rest of their team was more or less what Ushijima stated to our main duo and the reaction taken was "jeez dude." Prolaly because he had no filter and was blunt as hell regarding Sejoh's roster outside of Oikawa, I suppose.

Kageyama did mention that he'd tried for Shiratorizawa in S1Ep7 second half, after they had defeated Seijoh in their first practice match. Tanaka brings it up and asks Kageyama why he didn't join Shiratorizawa but came to Karasuno instead.

I am also in the barf when I work out club with Adam. We used to run lines in Basketball when I played when I was a kid (End line to quarter and back, end to middle, end to 3/4, end to end. Touching the line each time with your hand. Do it four times). I would run the full set, go throw up, and come back to practice.

Shiratorizawa and Seijoh are both private schools(exclusive schools)in Japan, rich and strong. Best middle school volleyball players can be invited to these high schools without entrance examinations. BUT if you’re not invited, the entrance exams will be very hard. Only top students in the study can be admitted. Kageyama was not invited, so he could just apply to Shiratorizawa by taking the exam, and he failed because he could not even understand the questions on the paper… Karasuno should be a public school, which is relatively easy to get into. In season I, the coach of Seijoh said they had invited Kageyama, but he rejected it. He finally chose the Karasuno because of Ukai‘s reputation.

First off, can we apreciate how the intro soundtrack matches with the new opening music? Secondly, lets remember there was a cut btween s1 and s2 and there is a major jump in quality. This anime is about to burst in all senses. We also start off right in the action all music fired up as everyone is, showing some imrpovements and some things that still work as fine as ever. They have been training! Third, JAPAN! Fourth, To me, THIS is how you start a 2nd season. You take all the hype that was high up at the end of the last episodes of the previous season, and you multiply that x10. And you get this 25:36
