In an interview, the Haikyuu author Furudate said that when he first created Oikawa, he intended him to be the most glamorous character, but he turned out to be “covered with dirt and mud”. To me, the statement pinpoints Oikawa as one of the most complex characters in Haikyuu. When he first shows up, he just seems to have it all and have it easy: solid player, successful team, good looks, fangirls, everything. He also seems to have an “easy” attitude, being all flashy and flippant. Throughout most of Season 1, I recognized his ability as a player, but didn’t really like/respect him for similar reasons to Sarah’s. But later on, it’s gradually revealed that underneath his facade, Oikawa doesn’t have it easy at all. There’s the top 0.001% genius like Kageyama who knows he’s born for volleyball; there’s the common 99% like Suga who works hard but knows & accepts that his ceiling is not that high. Then there’s Oikawa, stuck in the painful middle ground between 0.001% and 99%. Super invested, very ambitious, has a high ceiling but always a little below Kageyama and Ushiwaka. Living with that painful awareness, insecurity, fear, anxiety ever since age 12/13. Wanting to go to nationals for 6 years and always misses the mark by a bit. In Season 2, these internal struggles, these bits of “dirt and mud” despite his glamorous appearance turn Oikawa into my favorite character.

Oikawa is just the best character in the series. SPOILER: . . . . . . . He said that he was going to beat everyone, and after he naturalized to play for Argentina, he did beat everyone at the Olympics, it's not like, confirmed, but heavily implied that he won, because later when they were invited to the all stars match, everyone was eager to take their revenge on Oikawa. For a player to be left out of regionals by his kouhai, after losing to Wakatoshi as well, to throw everything for a shot overseas and actually achieving his dream, he could have been easily the MC, but he is the Final Boss.

Adam was so spot on in his speech about oikawa. In season one he sad in multiple moments "tobio, someday i will lose to you, but that day wont be today" for him the talent would surpass him at one point, he was just running from that, knowing that would happen. In this match after kageyama dumps we see him saying for the first time "i wont lose" that is the point that relates to the quote "talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish", you will never know what talents you have if you dont put work in that, we could say that Oikawa had a talent for serving, but was it really? Look at how much work he put on that to finally become that good. And then in the last play we see that changing, for me that was the point that he had a complete turn around in his mind, and it is sad to know that it just happend in his last match in high school

Not sure if I was just seeing things, but something in Sarah’s visual reaction to Oikawa’s words about letting your talents bloom caught my eye and made me feel more emotional :”) Great reaction on all accounts though, and honestly, even 4 seasons + a movie in, this is definitely one of The Episodes. The production quality is through the roof. Furudate (the author of Haikyuu) apparently also “fell for” Oikawa at this point of the story, with the long toss. That being said, I think Furudate was not completely satisfied with how they approached the talent VS skill topic here, and they made an extra effort to reframe it somewhat in the future, so there’s even more exciting stuff ahead!
@ttscream3 ай бұрын
Definitely agree. One detail that I always thought interesting was the fact of the long toss and falling into the table/blanket, that the animators make him slip and stumble in the attempt to get back up. A nice realistic touch in gameplay and physics. But also an subtle analogy to the quote where after falling he gets back up, reflects and readjusts his own mentality to keep fighting

Actually, every player on both teams touched the ball in that last play, so it was Karasuno's 6 who ended up being stronger than Seijoh's 6! I was already leaning towards liking Oikawa when I first watched Haikyuu cause I related to his frustration about talent vs hard work (though I never snapped like he did lol). But the long set and then Oikawa scrambling to get back into the game is what won me over for good. I still love that we're almost done season two and Sarah still confuses Adam at times asking if he's crying haha

Such an amazing match, even on rewatches that last point puts my nerves on edge. The show does such a great job of deepening Oikawas character. It’s such a genuine and insightful reaction when he snaps, for one he’s a young teen at that point, and two I can’t imagine the frustration he must’ve felt being so close to great at something you love and invest your whole self into-but always losing out to Ushi or Kageyama. Teens already have a lot of frustration and misplaced emotions, so I think it makes him more sympathetic to me, even if I hate his actions. Lol and poor lil Kageyama seems oblivious in that scene 😅. When ppl ask me why I love Haikyuu and why they should watch it, my answer is always the characters and their development. But that super long toss by Oikawa really shows that he has not given up on trying to be on Kageyama’s level, he probably worked and practiced hard for that. I think due to translation you misunderstood the line "6 who are strong are stronger". In Japanese is "Roku nin de tsuyoi hou ga tsuyoi" means "6 who are strong together are stronger" which is what Iwaizumi said to Oikawa in middle school. The motto of Seijou is the team and not individuals that's why their forte is the combination plays. They know they don't have someone like Ushiwaka a pure power player on their team so they perfected their team plays. Oikawa's ability as a setter is to bring out the best of all players and he also sees the setter to be someone who is in service of the team that's why losing this game was hard for them because every single one of the players from both teams gave everything they had and they still lost. In the little extra scene of the aftermatch Oikawa actually says it and recognizes that they were just a little bit better at that moment than them as a team.

THIS. I understand every criticism about Oikawa, but I think it's just so important to remember that these are still high school boys (a grace that a lot of Oikawa haters tend to give Hanata and Kageyama, but forgot to offer Oikawa). As a 17? Maybe 18 year old boy... knowing that you can be the best at your position in your area, you can be charming, you can work yourself to injury (remember that brace in the first appearance), you can have at times *insane* intellect of the game, you can throw yourself into the damn score board, and you can even CORRECTLY READ THE PLAY BEING MADE RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU (because Oikawa was in position, if the blockers hadn't touched it first he would've picked it up)....AND STILL. STILL. You can't beat this freakish Ace (Ushijima) or some genuis setter THAT YOU TRAINED (Kageyama). That is enough to drive anyone off the rails. Especially a high school boy in JAPAN of all countries where pride and standards is literally everything. Oikawa can be a dick, I know. But he carries this weight *extremely* well, all things considered. I've seen folks have breakdowns over far less back in my sports days 🤣 You don't have to like him, but I honestly don't understand how people get through the show and don't feel for him. SPOILERS: And he still overcomes it all, in the end. I love him. Sorry to dump on your post 🤣 he's not even in my top 5 favorites. But I do feel strongly about his arc lmaoo

Every last single person on the court touched that last rally, not just Karasuno! EVERY person. "Six who are strong are stronger." If you juxtapose this to their last point in their previous inter-high match, you'd see the animation parallels and what's the same, what's different, how much they've grown in the first two seasons. From here on out it's a new adventure. Also to Adam's point about Oikawa and nationals, the scene with the mysterious figure plants a seed early on! This is Oikawa's last high school volleyball tournament... having never gotten to nationals. Oikawa has always wanted to go bigger, go farther in volleyball, and knowing him, that conversation about finding your limits is a GREAT seed to plant in him. "Talent is something you make bloom, Instinct is something you polish" - SO on point for describing Oikawa's struggles and journeys with himself, his character growth, and of course his volleyball growth! The music during the last rally is epic, too bad copyright deprived it from us here haha.

23:10 Adam understood everything. Also some refferences just if you so happen to catch this comment: (this 2nd match against Seijoh has TONS of refferences to the previous match, all moments that went in a different direction last time) In this episode alone we have to big ones. One is the Kageyama dump he does to "pull ahead". In the earlier match the first point Seijoh scores is with a dump by Oikawa to suprise everyone and throw them off rythm from the start. And there has been a theme of whether if Kageyama can catch up to Oikawa. Last match we had the "one hand toss" to signal that Kageyama was indeed catching up, and now we have this dump to take the lead. Another one is of course that last set. Those are mirror scenes. If you play them back to back the differences are that Hinata has his eyes opened and can see the block and Kageyama's toss has a spin. Meaning had they not evolved "that toss" they would have lost. We also have Asahi here having a little moment of his own spking the ball from the back line since he learned to do jump serves and also a callback like Sarah said to the Johzenji match where they did the same.

The music, the action, the animation, the dialogue. Everything mixed together that makes the final relay really spectacular, makes everyone watching very excited. And it will hit harder for people who have experienced that feeling like volleyball players like Sarah and Adam. Haikyuu’s soundtracks is one of my all time favorites. Bravo to the artist/author for this amazing manga and bravo to the production team that animated, chose the soundtrack that gave us a wonderful anime

On the last play, Mad Dog fully commits to being a part of the team and hustles to save the ball (Also after Yahaba set him and he makes the kill a few plays before this, Mad Dog and Yahaba congratulate each other)

People point this out all the time but Oikawa actually had a read on Hinata's last spike, but bc the ball hit Mad Dog's fingertips on the way down the trajectory was off ruining his receive. He really was SO close.

yeah kyotani wasn't in sync on that block, probably because he lacked practice time with the team.

What's crazy is that the series is still just ramping up at this stage, there is so much to enjoy ahead of you. I can't wait to see how adam is gonna react to season 3 and 4. I kinda wish we could get more than one episode from you guys per upload lol but I understand it's kind of a pain just editing and uploading these alone.

Iwazumi is absolutely the MVP! He was eeeverywhere..doing ALL the things..and most importantly keeping a very close eye to his captain, as a friend, as a teammate, as the ace he really outperformed himself!

These reaction videos are the highlight of my week!! I've watched so many channels react to haikyuu and rewatched the whole show multiple times by myself. I love it so much and sharing this love for it, whether online or not, warms my heart. Can't wait for s3, even though s2 has a place in my heart, s3 has to be my favorite!! Soo many intense and epic moments are yet to come 🤩

Anyone I watch react to haikyuu, episode 9 of season 1 and episode 24 of season 2 are the first episodes I antecipate their reactions the most. I won't forget Sarah's first reacton to it hahah and now this one! One of the best episodes, for sure!

OMG I'm shocked right here when 22:56 Adam said exactly what the Seijoh's coach was going to say "Oikawa is really good at everything but he's not a genius". It's true, but also because it's true it makes me admire Oikawa even more. He knows himself is not a genius, yet his dedication and hard works are absolutely great and superb.

There's quote from a manga called Eyeshield 21; "We don’t have time to waste asking for the things we don’t have, we can only look for the best way to fight with the things we do have.“ I think that exactly mirrors what the character said to Oikawa

Oikawa is the Obi Wan Kenobi of Haikyuu. Obi Wan became one of the best Jedi although he was never one of the most powerful.

I'm pretty sure Adam's eyebrows touched his hairline. Also wanted to say a quick thank you to Sarah. I have infusions monthly on Thursday and it takes it out of me but ever since your very first haikyuu reaction you've given me something to look forward to during my recovery. I hadn't planned to say anything but your graceful candidness about your mental health journey gave me the courage for this vulnerability. So thank you for the fun, educational, and relatable videos. I've come to love volleyball more since subscribing to your channel and have enjoyed quietly supporting you on your path.

Something I noticed with a rewatch is that Mad Dog was late with his block. Potentially because he has bad timing when blocking with his teammates. (No one to countdown the block timing and he’s been away from the team for a while). if he had been a smidge faster or slower Seijoh probably gets another chance to attack. My favorite rally in the series!
@shelly13393 ай бұрын
I was waiting for this one! Just an amazing, amazing match that fills me with so many emotions - it must be my 9th or 10th rewatch and I still bawled during that last rally! So satisfying to see Adam appreciate all these moments - I sure wish I could discard all my memories of haikyuu so I can experience it again for the first time ;;; As always, appreciate you both (and Lydia ofc) for making this series!

This episode is just perfect. Sarah's first reaction video randomly appeared on my YT feed, and out of curiosity i watched and in the end what made me watch the entire anime as well. I just loved how much into she was, screaming, shaking and everything. And it's so awesome to see Adam just emotionally invested as well (on his own way haha). And to add to that, being a neuropsychologist myself, even the ad was great too. Hahaha. Another great video guys.

I like to think that Oikawa read that last play, just like in the first season, where he knew that Kageyama will pass it to Hinata. But it got a little redirected by hitting mad dog, which is awesome on both teams. Btw, I love the insight that Adam provides as a coach (and obviously I've been loving Sarah's insight since the beginning lol) ♥

One of the beauties of haikyuu like no other sports anime has done (in so far as ive known) is that it makes you cheer for the other team and not only for the main squad. You get attached to them like you are part of the cheerleading squad on the bleachers. The opponents arent just mountains for karasuno to overcome they are another team having the same aspirations as karasuno as well. You cant help but cheer of them.

I liked the reaction of both of you, together. This is one of the best episodes of the 2nd season, and a great finale. Well, nearly the finale of the season. You can feel and grab the emotions, the intensity, the goosebumps all over you arms.... I watched Haikyuu several times, it´s an anime I can watch if I feel exhausted or down, but Hinata and the guys pep me up. Every time.😆 Adams reaction to Oikawa was great, also in the end where Adams prediction come true, before the talk between Oikawa and his former trainer. And the "philosophical speech" of Oikawa shows true size; he repects his teammates and also Karasuno, we could see that in the last episodes as he showed respect to the progress of the players, like Yamaguchi and also Hinata and Kageyama. But like you said, only thing he can do is to train and to improve! That´s a thing everyone of us can do; focus on an aim a work hard to reach it, even if some others are better on some topics without train so hard.

My favorite episode! I know I pointed this out when Sarah watched this episode solo, but I still love how this episode is about how important each player on the court is and then in the last rally every player on both sides touches the ball at least once.

I was just missing Haikyu when I saw your reaction series pop up on my page! Now that we're almost done with season 2 I can't help but comment out all of my thoughts! I watched Haikyu during my high school years and was just playing volleyball for P.E. Now, I'm in my second year post graduate medical school, so it has been a long while yet the feelings I have for the show are still as intense! It was so much fun rewatching Haikyu with an actual volleyball player's pov! I literally binge-watched season 1 with you, and now season 2 with you and your husband, for the past 2 weeks whilst I'm cramming for my exams🤣It is so much more fun seeing your insights on the plays and all of it. Haikyuu is one of the reasons I started watching competitive and Olympic volleyball as well as tune into the volleyball national league so it will always have a special place in my heart. I'm looking forward for season 3 and season 4 with you guys! Thank you so much~

I’ve been waiting for this episode since your reactions with Adam started. By far one of the best episodes in the entire series, excluding stuff that has yet to be animated. Oikawa’s super long is 👌, this isn’t the same Oikawa from season 1. The one who won the match but was defeated mentally. Now loses this match but is determined to not give up against those “geniuses”
