I think there's something to say towards the fact that Ukai doesn't really know how to train Hinata, as shown in S2 when he had to go ask for help from his grandfather. Hinata needs special training plan for him to catch up to the team since his middle school was basically nothing structured; Ukai doesn't have the time to do that for him; he has a whole team to look after.

Yeah, I think there are a lot of factors. It is Ukai's first venture as a coach, and up to this point he wasn't actively playing competitive volley. And also, he wasn't there for the start, he kinda got thrown in the middle of the run, and had to just adjust rather than making significant changes cause he had no time. So I do think he's a very good coach and could help Hinata, but I agree with you, it's hard for him to fit Hinata in the equation.

Crypt Keeper: "I have height and power" National Team coach: "I have a little elf seagull boy"
@brunobotr20202 күн бұрын
The manga delves into this a lot deeper but during Nationals (Note: this will probably be brought up in the 2nd Haikyuu movie so sorry for a little spoiler) but the NT coach also says that while they have a preference for skilled players who are tall and they aren't really looking for skilled players who are considered short, those 'short' players will force them to select them because of their overwhelming skills. I also think it's the environment plays a part in their coaching styles. Coach Washijo mentions in S3 that there's only so much he can do as a HS coach because the team is constantly changing each year due to incoming 1st years and graduating 3rd years so he likes to simply things. Plus since Shiratorizawa is a powerhouse, he can probably recruit a lot of tall and skilled players to come and play for Shiratorizawa. And also as a coach who's been to Nationals numerous times, he's sticking to a formula that's works for him (Height and Power = success). On the other hand, the National Team coach is a bit like Karasuno. He's working with a skilled player pool, but to due to various factors, Japan will likely be the lesser physically imposing team in most of their matches, so he's gotta come up with new ways that help minimize the physical disadvantage.
@Koshak872 күн бұрын
They are in a very different situations in this regard. Washijo is able to pick the highest and the most powerful guys available in Miyagi prefecture (and maybe, even further), while for the national team coach, even if he picks the highest and the most powerful from available Japanese players, these same athletes will still be quite average in height and power by international standards. So the national team coach has to come up with alternative ways to win. Also, while Washijo's team drastically changes every year, the national team has relatively more stability, enabling the coaches to do a more long-term planning.

Well it's not just his height that's the problem. The dude just has zero fundamentals up to this point. Every skill besides hitting up to this point is only acted upon purely through instinct. The only reason why he's had success so far as a player is because Kageyama is one hell of a setter. Without Kageyama up to this point, he's barely anything. It's precisely the complexity of the situation that makes it so interesting and cool for storytelling, so both your takes on it are incredibly valid imo! It's slightly reminiscent of the S2 Kageyama/Hinata conflict in a way that Hinata kind of gives in to his selfish desire and greed to improve, potentially sabotaging the tournament preparations, but in this case the scale is even bigger than in S2 because it goes beyond just their team. It's a consistent flaw of Hinata's character - and, at the same time, something that sets him apart from casual athletes and really feeds into his growth when things work out just right. These kind of conflicts are the most interesting to watch unfold. I also feel like Adam got a really good read on Washijou; he's a really interesting character, and I'm glad the author kept him in the story in such an interesting capacity (and oh boy does it get better still). The author actually got go to on a tour of the Olympic training facility before drawing it, so everything is quite accurate! And the coach's line, "Let's prove to everyone just how interesting volleyball really is", impressed the editors of Japan's weekly volleyball magazine so much that they emailed the manga editors and asked for permission to use it in the magazine.

As for Nishinoya not getting an invite to the youth camp, it is also very possible that the selection committee ruled him out after seeing a suspension on his disciplinary record (Season 1). Of course, us viewers knowing the full context understand that Nishinoya didn't do anything malicious and that that he is an overall good guy but the committee would probably see the suspension and rule him out immediately.

Personally I think they mentioned in the national training camp that they were looking for all rounders, that's why they did a game in which they shuffled the positiones. As good as Noya is, he is good as a libero, he isn't skilled in other positions, and even as a libero he has a very hard time with over hand receives and emergency sets (don't know if you read the manga but it's way more emphasised there, always pointing out how it made a weird noice or it's a bit off whenever he sets in the synch attack)
39:31 You’re both right in your takes. Washijo is such a complicated old coot. 😂 After Shiratorizawa lost, Washijo looked at Hinata and commented the higher Hinata aims, the more treacherous the roads will get. Although he wants to deny the existence of an effective small athlete, Washijo nevertheless opened one of those treacherous paths for Hinata. 🥹 And it’s up to Hinata to become the athlete that Adam said he respects in s3e8 - the small kid who makes it impossible for coaches to cut them from the roster.

The Manga has a really interesting line from Washijo about Hinata later on in the series (SPOILERS) "I want to reject you with all my 40 years. Idk if y’all caught it but Coach Anabara (the one with glasses) actually suggested Hinata to join as well as Tsukki, buuuut Coach Cryptkeeper most likely said “N. O.” One thing that absolutely breaks my heart is that Hinata has been given NO opportunities for growth without being a part of a “set.” He’s had to scavenge for his own personal growth. He had no middle school team to play with and the few that he tried to gather in his first and second years in middle school were reluctant or straight up told him “No.” Kageyama is even surprised when he overhears Hinata’s conversation with Suga about all the places Hinata had to go just to get some reps in, like hallways and with the girls’ team. Even on Karasuno, Hinata’s desire to grow (wanting to have his eyes open for the freak quick) was stifled by the comfort and pace that the team was stuck in (they knew they needed a change but didn’t know how). Hinata is the embodiment of “won’t take no for an answer,” despite having it thrown at him left and right: “No, we won’t play with you.” “No, you can’t join this team.” “No, I won’t set you.” “No, you can’t be the ace or unstoppable on your own.” “No, you can’t change the way you hit.” “No, you don’t belong here at this level.” “No, you won’t get any opportunities handed to you.” Hinata is impulsive and a bit selfish but what can a guy who’s had NOTHING TO RECEIVE do but GO and TAKE what he can. His act on self interest isn’t rooted in having no care for his team it’s rooted in wanting to become better. Arguably if he doesn’t want to become better, Karasuno is worse off for it. He said it himself that he doesn’t think the training camps are more important than practicing with his team, but he just NEEDS to know what makes GREAT players great and how he can become great too. This shows his true nature and fierce competitive spirit. Kageyama and Tsukki are praised and encouraged to step out of the team’s practices to train with strong people, but Hinata is shot down (in the anime) because he’s in a place that he wasn’t invited to and shot down (from most viewers) because at the heart of it they think he doesn’t deserve those opportunities either. (But actually Coach Anabara said he DID want to invite Hinata, so what would be people’s reactions if they did see Hinata go to the training camp invited? Would they say that it would be a great opportunity or would they think he doesn’t need to be there?) But Hinata doesn’t care. He won’t take no for an answer. He is Hinata Shoyo from the concrete.

I get what you're saying and agree with your points made. At the same time, there's something to be said about etiquette and respect. If you aren't selected, to show up anyway is extremely disrespectful to the hosts of the event. Of course its totally unfair for Hinata who is struggling so hard, and willing to go through whatever lengths possible, to once again be told "No". We've seen his struggles, we know how desperate he is to improve, and we know this drive to better himself isn't entirely selfish or from a feeling of hubris, as if he *deserves* to be there. However, if someone pulled a stunt like this irl, I would absolutely be of the opinion that he needs to leave. Making exceptions for people that disregard the rules opens up the door to future problems too, and you don't want to set a bad precedent. Not to mention, Hinata's actions spit in the faces of all the other players that weren't invited and respected the host's decision to not include them.

This kind of no can make or break you. I think there is lots at play here that the author is showing casing. 1) a person’s action and beliefs when facing many NOs. 2) etiquettes whether you follow that or defy it based on your beliefs/goals. I get it you wouldn’t want everybody crashing where they’re not invited. But you will stay stuck and limited to what everybody limits you to vs taking it yourself. I think that Hinata is a very unique character because he is selfish in a way we don't usually see protrayed in media. Normaly a selfish character has other personality flaws asociated with it, like being mean or putting others down, but Hinata is the contrary: he is always cheering for others, he in not intimidated by someone elses talent, he is kind and friendly, but he also believes that he deserves every oportunity just because he wants it really bad. And It's not a black and white situatrion, because Hinata has been the underdog who doesn't get oportunities, is continiously overlooked and underapreciated and it was not his fault that he "wasted three years in middle school" and is behind his peers in terms of proper technique. But the fact is that, wether he wanted it or not, he wasted those years and is behind. Ant it's so unfair and I understand how a 15 year old boy would be so frustrated that he would try to sneak in a training camp he's not invited to but it's selfish non the less. I think its very good writting and that makes Hinata a very compelling and realistic character. And I also think that his reaction might have been tied to who did get those oportunities, because like Adam said he's not gonna be happy for Kageyama, because their relationshipis based in competition. But also Hinata's relationship with Tsukki isn't great either, and Tsukki is very mean to him so no wonder he didn't feel happy for him. Maybe it would have been different if someone whith whom Hinata had a better relationship had gotten that oportunity, like Yamaguchi or Tanaka.

There is an off-hand comment in the manga that didn't get translated well in a future episode that even the national team management isn't infallible. They admit that they do miss out on other young players that have great potential. It's unfortunate, but Noya & Oikawa have not been noticed in a national recruitment level because they didn't go far in their prefecture levels. Kageyama got invited for the 1st time because Karasuno beat Shiratorizawa, a consistent top 8 national contender. Kageyama was good enough in middle school to be mentioned in newspapers; so far, even though Noya is also a genius libero, we have no info how far his reputation in the game reach.

I can totally understand why everyone criticize Hinata. I rememberthe first time I watched this episode. That is totally a tragic. Even though Hinata is my favorite character, I still scream "Don't do that!!!! Please go back to school!!!!"through the full episode. But after review the whole season a lot of times, I start to understand why he did that. I am not saying this is a right thing to do, but you can find some track in Hinata's volleyball life. Hinata didn't learn volleyball systemly. The way he learned it is looking at someone who is way better than him. In his junior high, he learned by after the game with Kageyama. So he went to practice with the girl volleyball team. In his first year in high school, he learned from all the team he played with. You can see this thinking pattern from the training camp in Tokyo. Hinata just came to the third gym, and asked Kuroo and Bukuto: Can I join your practice? No one invited Hinata, and he just show up to ask. The way he strike up a conversation with Kenma can also show that thinking pattern. He wants to know something, he just ran for it.(I think that is why I love him so much.) By the way, I didn't think about the National, too. Maybe because the traing camp is only five days. I feel like it is not a really a big deal?

This is a great point for why Hinata made the decision that I haven't considered even after all this time! In terms of him missing practice not being that big of a deal...oof. It's a toss up. SPOILERS FOR ADAM. * * * * * * * * * * * I think we can consider it not a huge deal in hindsight. In hindsight...this was actually one of the most important decisions Hinata made for his personal growth (along with oneee other that I won't mention just in case you're not a Manga reader.) But in the moment...having two MAJOR components of your offense, and a third of your defense missing all at one time is a pretty big deal 😅 like Kageyama, Hinata, and Tsukki is HALF of the starting line up (not including Noya because he switches out all game). It's why they start focusing on individual skills because...as a team they are halted for a bit. And in terms of what Hinata was actually gonna learn...I feel like only Hinata could've gained so much from that opportunity tbh. Especially because as you mentioned, he learns from watching others. I absolutely agree with Sarah that Crypt Keeper let him be a ball boy to break his spirit more than anything. Ukai being a great coach, was able to give Hinata the wisdom he needs to make the most out of it. But that's not a position that Crypt Keeper respects. Hinata was suppose to be embarrassed, frustrated, and fail. It all worked out, but leaving training with the team to be a ball boy IS insane. It just so happened to be the best way he could learn, but nobody really knew that.

The first guy Hinata talked to is a friend that went to middle school with him, he was actually in a music club, and helped him with volleyball practice when he had no one 6:22 You have no idea how true that statement is (the anime mellows it down a bit but they are sooooo competitive in the manga) 6:56 Daichi is angrier than usual (again in the manga their personalities are way more unhinged so he was even worse) because he just found out that he somehow shrunk🤣 8:37 The basquetball club guys wondered if they should recruit Hinata but Daichi glared at them 9:13 It's actually said that they did all those tests, we don't get to see them but we do get everyone's results 9:26 so... he has some Hinata in him 14:03 We later get someone who believes the contrary, that they look for crazy people, but they tell us the answer at around ep 4 or 5, that they mostly look for all rounders, and Noya is a great libero but that's it, he even has a hard time with over hands and sets (it's more emphasised in the manga, every time he does a toss for the synch attack they point out how it made a weird sound or it's slightly off) 22:50 I know it's very small but I love that it's Enoshita the one that realises he could have a hard time reading and will most likely get lost, shows he really pays attention and will make a great captain 23:17 I love how Adam just knew he had to be there 29:45 That's Haikyuu I feel, most conflicts, ideas and situations are so real that there are very different ways to view something and acording to the viewers expirience or personality the opinion will differ, like Oikawa's character, Hinata and Kageyama's fight in s2, Washijo's coaching philosophy, and so on. I don't think Sarah was wrong to feel that way, it's just that the fandom knows it will be ok (even better than ok) so since they know the results most agree with him. I personally said that I would have agreed more with Kageyama in s2 had it been real life because of how impossible spiking with his eyes open would seem irl (I mean the set alone is almost impossible) and with no frame of reference from any player there is no garantee they'll succeed (among many other reasons). But everyoe told me they would have taken Hinata's side (I still feel that that's just because we know the results though) Many get angry at Washijo, but I feel he made the best decision, first of all, he is right, why would he invite him to a camp of players that are invited precisely because they already have a lot of potential on their own? if not it would be a free camp for any first year that wants to go. Then, had he let him just play it would send the wrong message to the rest that didn't get invited, remember this is a mock camp, first time that they do it, they have to set the standar, if they let anyone in just because they took the bus without caring then next year it would be a mess, not to mention that this year's first years that didn't get invited would feel horrible with the special treatment for Hinata. And lastly, Washijo could only be a ball boy in his time, everything he learned (to becaome the most succesful coach in the prefecture, and very succesful nationally) was from being a ball boy, so him putting Hinata in that position shouldn't be seen as him hating him and putting him in the worst place he could think of

I feel like i have nothing to add until we get through the arc 🤣 but I will say I love seeing a coach's perspective on this because I was very much Sarah when I first watched this episode. As a coach, you have to be able to hear players out and understand the psychology of all your players. I think its so cool that Adam is always able to look past the cringe, the snarky attitudes, the competitive nature, and say "Look I would NEVER. But your reasoning is valid. I'll allow it." Thats super cool. Great video as always yall 👏🏾💜 here's to Season 4!!

I mean. I when I first watched this ep and in many rewatchs after I was of the same opinion as Adam. But ten we got to this part in Sarah's first watch through and hearing her perspective actually made me change my mind. I hadn't even consider all the implications of Hinata's decision. And I was like holy cow your right 🙀...all this into say I really valued Sarah's perspective on this.

I basically agree with Adam, though him sneaking in gives me so much second hand embarrassment similar to Sarah lol Like, I understand Hinata's mindset and that fear of getting left behind, and I think the mindset is good in certain situations. And Hinata's ability to go after what he wants is something I couldn't ever do, so I admire that. That all being said, bruh lol
@milicaspasojevic438720 сағат бұрын
The level of secondhand embarrassment I feel from this situation is unmatched That being said, as someone who has given up certain things in life for various reasons, I can't help but admire and feel a touch of jealousy towards Hinara's determination to chase his dreams despite everything. I’m sure he felt embarrassment and humiliation, yet he persevered. For this reason, he and Oikawa are the most inspiring characters to me.

Sarah, I know that we need to take Adam's side because he's awesome, and also we have to follow the bro house code, and that might throw you off sometimes. But I truly think that you're the perfect reactor. You immerse in the experience, showing a genuine stream of unfiltered emotions, but still somehow analyze everything objectively. You put yourself in the shoes of characters and coach in real time, consider only the information they have at that moment and think through what's the best way to deal with it, giving us meaningful guidance on how to translate this art piece to real life. I believe this is truly kind of a superpower, and what makes you so admirable, even more than your life achievements, like becoming the volleyball goat, or scoring Adam.

Seeing how Karasuno from season 1 to 3, especially Hinata's development... all I can say for season 4 is.... let's try to survive because no pain no gain. Ngl, I cried a lot in this season 😂
@Nano-199820 сағат бұрын
Sarah's position is more than clear and understandable, if her Karasuno teammates got angry it was also understandable, but let's not forget that Hinata is like that, impulsive, simple, he wanted to play volleyball as a child for the little giant, in his school there was no no team, what did he do? He joined his friends from other sports like soccer, etc., to put together a team. .. He aspires to improve, he knows that he has a thousand defects as a player, beyond the first feeling of jealousy for Kageyama and Tsukki, he is characterized by being simple, he just wants to play and improve, what he did is crazy and no one would do it ? Yes, but with his attitude he shows that he wants to continue learning, and he believes that he will do it in the training of the first years. Shiratorizawa's coach, we all had one like that, he hits us with reality in our faces, he puts you to the test, he doesn't give you compliments or nice words, it's up to each one of us how to continue after those harsh statements, with this Hinata already gave your first step, a show of attitude and courage, he wants to reach those places, and learn from the best, if it even involves humiliating himself, he just wants to see how the best train, to be one of the best
@Nano-199820 сағат бұрын
PS: Just as Yamaguchi sought help to learn from Shimida (I think that was his name) for his serves and to be able to compete, just as Ukai went to his grandfather to help him with Hinata and his training in S2, it is clear that Sometimes he needs particular training that is different from Karasuno's, he fell 3 years behind in school, He's going against time, he needs to step on the accelerator and it's not at all a bad idea to train with the best, although well the forms... They are dubious, hahaha

I appreciate the guts and stubbornness Hinata showed, but I absolutely agree with Sarah that he got off way lighter then he would realistically have ended up. Its very good writing for this kind of flaw for a character.

Omg - this is exactly what I needed today. I appreciate Adam's choice of color - hoodie color matches Hinata's Hair! 🎉. Poor Tsuki - he has to deal with this kind of relentless drive... nobody ever talks about him in this episode!

an amazing animation detail is that hinatas bike is too big for him likely a hand me down or like one he had the hubris of asking for, and it wobbles because his legs are too short for it, seeing him do that long bike to kurasuno every day is really inspiring.
@withxoutxlife2 күн бұрын
I just thought it was because pedaling up a really steep mountain is really hard. I imagine its exhausting to try to maintain balance and speed, and then factoring in the weather being cold and windy with snow, ugh, I dunno how he does it to be honest. Plus his mind is focusing on other things at the time, so I'm not sure if he was all that worried about his biking form. I didn't really consider that the bike was the wrong size for him, since I didn't notice him having any issues in most other scenes where he's biking. Maybe its just something I overlooked though. 🤔

@caioolive2 күн бұрын
About what Washijo is trying to say through his actions, I think i stand in the middle ground between Adam and Sarah. Like, Hinata does suck at everything else when comparing to players his age. If not for his athletic feats and hunger, being a ball is probably what he would be in any regular team. So I think that letting him stay there, but as a ball boy, is his way of saying "to me you're not special, everyone starts from the same place with me", especially considering there's no Kageyama there. Although just letting him staying there is probably a huge thing, cause, given what we know about Washijo, I hardly think he would accept anyone to be the ball boy. So I think part of him respects his hunger, but another part of him wants him to show Hinata the real world. Especially if you consider that Washijo was a player with the same obstacles as Hinata but was actually good. He didn't get opportunities because he was small, not because he was bad, which IS the case with Hinata.

That side eye from Sarah when Tsukishima was about to get picked haha. P.S I think watching anime for decades made me immune to cringe so I was like okaaay about the hinata thing lol. Also It just came up to me that this could be a really good time for the rest of the team to feel how it is not to play with the freak quick duo. They might have gotten used to relying on their first years.
@AGA1519942 күн бұрын
Not telling his team what he was doing was bad, but hinata doesnt know how to play volleyball at the elite level within a system or with other players. Everyone including himself considers hinata strong because of kageyama and hinata wants to learn how to be strong individually

Question for Sarah - if you were in Goshiki's position, i.e. good player from powerhouse team that got upset but a relatively unskilled player like Hinata and he showed up to a training camp, what would your reaction be? Are you the type to respect them and want to see what happens, or would you write it off as a fluke and want them out? Also Adam - pretty much on the money with the Washijo read
@kodzuren12 күн бұрын
i think is that competitiveness that let athletes go to such high levels of competitions I can't imagine what Sarah put herself into to win a gold medal in a world championship i was waiting since the first episode of season 1 to see Adam react to the start of this season Because he is a coach he always put himself in the situation of "what would i do to help this little kids?" and to see his thoughts being express in words is cool, even if you don't agree with him And then seeing Sarah telling how his affect Karasuno so much and putting things back into perspective genius!! Cant wait to see this arc unwrap (Do you guys write a script for this reactions?)
@japkorox912 күн бұрын
Yes we love Adam even more now!😆 He was able to think on the perspective as a coach and also different players. Love Sarah too. Your perspective was more about as a player and as a team so we understand that too. Different people can have different perspective of a situation. Haikyuu is the best! I think Adam will love the ball boy arc!

i think both of you are correct in you thoughts about the crypt keepers decision. he wants to know how far Hinata is willing to go and also to show him what he is competeing against by offering him the ballboy position he does both.. and as Ukai said if he didnt want him there he would say so. ive watched Haikyu many many times so dont want to speculate more and add possible spoilers. and i think after the finals loss his comments about hinata may have been a small not of respect to the fact HInata never gives up despite his size when his younger self did

I think the two things that make me a tad frustrated with Hinata for this (though I understand his motivations) are 1-what Sarah said, he bailed on his team leading into Nationals 2-What Ukai says, how this jeopardizes the coach/inter-school relations that take years to build as this is pretty disrespectful. I have to imagine it's even more so in a society like Japan's where respect and protocol are very important, and breaking it can lead to a larger fall out than we would think.
I think AONE deserves to go to National team. 2nd year! Tall! Strong! Stays calm to avoid tunnel visión and only talks to say important stuff
@alaregret12702 күн бұрын
I think the part of Hinata missing practice is definitely the crux, but as we learn, Hinata needed this time and experience since it was something he had not received at Karasuno. Similar to the situation of him and Kageyama arguing about retooling their super quick, it took a reckless and shameless courage to pursue a higher ceiling. As a coach I’d never want someone to miss growing with their team, but if the team can benefit from their growth on a separate path, I’d at least want to consider the possibility.

@VladimirMizich2 күн бұрын
I will always focus on the fact that Hinata is short for a volleyball player. I think Haikyu drills this home as often as they can too. So you have to ask yourself; can he really afford to be selfless and a good teamplayers. Would that be enough for him to reach as high as he wants to go, and would people notice him at all... I think to some extent he HAS TO be selfish and just go for every chance he can get. Else he won't make it. I'm not saying that short volleyball players are selfish a-holes, but that all of them have a certain drive...because without that drive they wouldn't be able to get the chances tall players get. A drive to break rules perhaps...or a drive to go for something they want, and ignore if they are told "no". Short players aim higher in a way. They have to.
@mhacNH19 сағат бұрын
I really appreciate this arc. Hinata is such an underdog. In some ways, I wonder/speculate if it's Furudates way of showing to all the "small players" out there here is what you must face and may be something you have to do to overcome societal limitations.
