Hello Adam, Hinata's "if I'm here, you're invincible!" is exactly what Kageyama told him in S.1 when they had that practice match with the neighborhood team. I believe the words were really impactful to Hinata (considering he repeated them almost word for word) so he wasn't riling up the other team. I believe he was doing what he believed Kageyama was doing back then: to express confidence in his abilities, while also reassuring his team mate.
@brianwade12454 ай бұрын
"I believe in you all." The one line he says before every match. When he says it, it almost sounds like a joke, yet it almost sounds like a threat. However, since everyone knows that there is no underlying meaning to those words, they can all trust him to the utmost. And it's this episode where you get to see EXACTLY what he means with that line. As Ukai said: "Absolute trust with no words involved". He doesn't even hesitate with going right back to Mad Dog, because he has absolute faith in him and everyone else on his team. When he tells his teammates he believes in them, he means just that. There's no caveat, no asterisk, no ifs or buts. Just absolute, unconditional faith. No matter how many times I watch this, I will always get choked up at the shot of Mad Dog's teammates all rushing to celebrate him scoring that point. That was probably the first time he ever realized that his teammates actually CARE about him and are ROOTING for him. Just an amazing moment that I think never gets the recognition it deserves.

Yahaba's the guy during warmups who tried to roll the ball towards Yachi and then put on his "mewing" face and was trying to flirt, like "oh sorry, you mind passing that back to me? 😉" But Kiyoko was having none of it and batted the ball away lmao. "Charai" has a more complex meaning in Japanese than just "shallow" or "superficial". It's someone who dresses flashy (perhaps even gaudy), socially skilled, and good at flirting, dyes their hair, and generally push their energy out into the public space. I think North Americans might understand the Charai personality type as a "player". That's why I think what Mad Dog meant could be paraphrased as "Huh, looks like there's some depth to you after all".

Saw Adam make a face when Mad Dog says "yeah" to Oikawa telling him "nice hit" while handing him the ball. Subtleties in translation - it's not really Mad Dog saying "yeah, my hit was good" but rather a "yeah" of acknowledgement/acceptance of Oikawa's complement. In other words, for seemingly the first time, Mad Dog responded to/acknowledged Oikawa. Previously, we had seen him ignore Oikawa's directions and only respond to Iwaizumi.

I'm with Adam on this one. Getting on the bro-house with that ain´t little. To have the cojones to face a problematic person in a group and, not only that, a problematic and hostile person requires huge amounts of courage. Never played Volleyball, but I played American Football and the few mates who cared enough to keep the morale outside the field are the ones that I'll remember forever. Even if they didn´t play much or at all. You know, the mommas of the team *cough cough* Suga.

@@rodrigocazanova1407 fr, in Japanese culture, saying no and telling somebody what to do is considered aggressive, a police official would tell you to “maybe park somewhere else” instead of “you can’t park there”. Grabbing someone by the shirt, slamming them in the wall and telling them a few straight truths is huge, specially doing that to someone that presents himself as a total delinquent like mad dog. You need balls of titanium to do that.

It’s just as fast as when Hinata was closing his eyes, and even then he was still getting blocked because of the commit block. The difference now is even if there’s a commit block in front of him he can see what’s the best course to hit. Whereas before eyes closed meant no thought put into the swing, just a hard swing and hope for the best.

I love Daichi's line: "We're going to surpass Aoba Johsai. We're going to surpass them with THIS TEAM!" Meaning, not with another team, not with other team members, they don't need new insane players. Every player on THIS TEAM is essential, and they can beat Aoba Johsai with these members. Hearing something like that is so reassuring from your captain. He recognizes each player and each position, as if to say, you guys are good enough. We are good enough to beat Aoba Johsai, as this combination of players. A short line, but so effective... "with THIS TEAM!"

"And if you're able to do that, just know that you're lucky. Teams like that don't exist everywhere." Some of my favorite lines in this season, and possibly the whole show if I'm being honest. Pairing it with Mad Dog turning around and seeing everyone cheer for him/support him just adds to how touching and true the sentiment is. Yahaba getting a VIP express entrance to the Bro House was so unexpected but welcomed LOL. I also really enjoyed that interaction and how he was able to stand his ground. Kind of ties to how Mad Dog "answers to"/respects Iwaizumi because Iwa is able to challenge and beat him; in a similar way, Yahaba is the one who confronts Mad Dog head-on and doesn't back out like the others on the team do (and likely have, based on how the conversations prior go), and because of that- whether directly or indirectly- he gets himself and his mind sorted out and listens to Yahaba's advice. Just another really fascinating dynamic and backstory to another "side" character!

I think most people miss the real point of Kyotani being in the story. When players like Kyotani are starting in a sport or in a new team, most people will just try to avoid any interaction with team, they try to not look at these players and hope for the best, instead of acting like Yahaba and dealing with the issues, talk with them and try to understand their behaviour and frustrations
@kizukimitana4 ай бұрын
I'm so happy my boy Yahaba is getting the appreciation he deserves. What I understood by him being a "shallow" person is that he is someone who cares about how he appears to others - we can also see this when he tries to flirt with Yachi and he puts up a "macho" facade, meaning that he doesn't show his real self to others and instead projects what he thinks they want of him. For Yachi, he thought she would like a manly guy, and for his senpai, a good underclassman. That's why, Yahaba doesn't overstep all this time with Mad Dog even though he is clearly pissed off at the guy. We can see him holding in his anger throughout the first 2 sets whenever Mad Dogs flubs but he, as the good underclassman that he believes he should be, lets Oikawa (Captain) and Iwa (Vice Captain) handle things on court. We can therefore presume that during Seijoh practices, Yahaba held in his negative feelings towards Mad Dog for similar reasons. Otherwise Mad Dog would have gotten his head back in the game much sooner😭 Yahaba's anger progressively builds up until he decides to ditch the goody two shoes act and gives Mad Dog a good verbal beat down. That's why Mad Dog is so surprised because Yahaba looked like the kind of guy to not confront others much less aggressive people like Kyotani😂 Even so, it should be noted that Yahaba brings Kyotani to the corner so as not to distract his senpai from their flow. That's why he is the goat😩 Back to the idea of being shallow, Yahaba might not have the same drive for volleyball as let's say Oikawa/ Iwa/ Mad Dog so to him, being good might be about not dragging the name of his senpai (especially Oikawa whose "legacy" as Setter he will be inheriting) through the mud. By no means am I saying that Yahaba does not love vb, but there are different ways and levels of loving vb and I think for Yahaba, he is not a vb fanatic but just a regular guy who joined the club for extracurricular purposes and then fell in love with the game (like Ennoshita). Yahaba still trains hard to stand on court and doesn't want to sully Oikawa's name nor the name of Seijoh that his senpai spent years building (constantly going to the Prelims finals for 2 and a half years straight for both Inter High and Spring High isn't an easy job but Seijoh did it and with pride). It might be a shallow reason in the eyes of volleyball fanatics like Mad Dog who play vb for the sake of vb (and not anyone else or anything else) and to WIN but I believe that for whatever reason Yahaba wants to stand on court, wants to go to Nationals, his reasons are VALID. Phew, I ended up writing a whole character analysis of Yahaba💀 Idk if anyone will read this long essay but yeah😂 That's what I think anyway😂😂

10:50 Although it's never confirmed, my theory is that Mad Dog deliberately targets Tsukki with zero finesse thinking only of "I'm gonna hit his smirky face hard with the ball", and Tsukki is still aware of Mad Dog's vindictiveness and knew that Mad Dog would aim for him 14:17 We've seen from S1 & 2 that Seijoh coach managed to cultivate the team in a way that all the players can self-coach during high pressure in real games. Most of the time, the coaching team is silent, allowing the players to figure out strategies, and only chip in when the players can't. Last season, the Seijoh coach almost warned them about focusing too much on Hinata, but Oikawa beat him to the punch, earning a smile from the coach. Therefore, most of the time, Oikawa and the coach are on the same page. In this case though, Oikawa had no plans switching out Mad Dog. He's only asking Iwa-chan to manage Mad Dog. From last season, Oikawa signaled his coach for a time out to discuss the freak duo secret signals, which means the coach allows Oikawa to use up a precious time out of his own prerogative. If Oikawa wanted Mad Dog subbed out, he would have made his opinion known to the coach, but he didn't. In Mad Dog's last point before being subbed out, Oikawa trusted him with the set even though Mad Dog got blocked and spiked out of bounds. Oikawa still thought they could manage Mad Dog in-court and Mad Dog can still help them achieve victory. The coach doesn't agree and subs Mad Dog out. This was the rare instance that the coach and Oikawa have different opinions. Not that any choice is good or bad, just different, and interesting. Then when Mad Dog got subbed in again, Oikawa immediately tossed to him. The dude just cost them 3 points in a row. The coach saw the Yahaba moment, but Oikawa didn't. Oikawa just knows Mad Dog's potential, and trusts the coach who subbed him back so fast, and sets Mad Dog immediately. 32:10 For clarification, Hinata & Kageyama ARE doing the freak quick, but this time with eyes open. Their current freak quick is as fast as S1 with the additional advantage of Hinata's eyes open and aiming. The blocking, filtering, and receiving of Seijoh are just doing a good job of preventing Hinata from scoring. The fact that this is also their 3rd match against each other means that Seijoh has adjusted to the freak quick's speed. Hinata does have an idea of hitting off the fingertips of the blockers, and has pulled it off 2x so far (against Lev & 2m guy), but his last attempt against Wakunan failed spectacularly. That might be the reason why he's not trying it again, because it's too unreliable at the moment.

It's curious how through the series we have been told that the best set is the one that spikers can easily hit, yet we see Oikawa going against this and pushing the spikers to hit higher or faster cause they can. Any thoughts on it?

(SPOILERS AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN WILL) So, about that sentence, it becomes a past concept, especially on the manga, but you can alrwady see it on season 4, where kageyama is called a goody two shies, and then starts to push his teammates to the best that they can be... So I don't like so much that phrase, because it can misinterpreted as the setter can't push the hitters to the maximum, they must only set easy balls for them

Another thing is, this sentence means that the hitter is who has the ultimatum on how the ball will be set, but that does not mean the setter can't tell the hitters to become better players

I didn't read the comments below because there was a spoiler notice, but I will give you my tow thoughts on this. It is a balance. When you are in a competition or a match that has "meaning" you want to give your hitters the sets that will best set them up for success in that moment. However in general people do not like to be uncomfortable and his includes hitters. They want to hit a ball that feels good for them, but this might not be the best use of their talents. In this case you want to push them to be uncomfortable and utilize the skills you see them have.

The anime at around 12-12 points is a bit delayed to Adam and Sarah's reactions

I think that what happens at this point in the series is that Kageyama sets better, but Oikawa is a better setter. Kageyama is beyond talented and can make wild adjustments in any given moment like that last play, but Oikawa is better at managing the court and juggling between pushing his hitters to be better and giving them what they want.

just wanted to say i'm currently watching season 4 and your reactions to season 4 so i just watched you react to s4 ep 16-17 right before watching this video lol, it's so fun. also i have a question: hinata is said to be bad at serving and i always thought it's a good serve as long as it goes over the net which i thought hinata's did so i was curious about what makes a serve good or bad??
@adamschulz94754 ай бұрын
That's a great question. So baseline is to get the serve over. However the goal is to get the other team out of system. What that means is that the setter has to run to the ball and cannot easily set all the hitters. If you can eliminate one of the hitters from being able to hit, it makes playing defense easier. So the other team passes Hinata's serve pretty easily so they would have a high sideout efficiency when he is serving.
