Funny to me hearing that people want more pausing. Usually on reaction stuff people are like "pause less so you're basically just a bonus to me watching/rewatching the thing". Hearing people want it more shows how valuable your guys' commentary/perspective is. Either way for me, I just want you both to watch it however you all want, because more immersion from you two just makes for a better watching experience on my end, and that's what's the best part about this series :). Edit: Amazing shirt.

Always love getting Adam's commentary on Ukai's coaching decisions. As a viewer, I thought Ukai's decision was totally natural given Kageyama's fatigue. Didn't even think anything of it. But hearing Adam frame it as a "fireable offense" really put into perspective just how much Ukai is going out on a limb here. And yeah, in real life 99% of coaches would not do something like that in a crucial match. Especially given the fact that player fatigue as it is portrayed in the show isn't very realistic, as you both noted. Great commentary!

@jacobherrera8735
@jacobherrera8735 2 ай бұрын
@@tesshh1 that's true lmao, but the decision itself is still fireable, just doesn't apply to Ukai, or I would even assume most high school teams. I'd imagine it'd only happen at the high school at a school like Shiratorizawa where they are a private school with a lot invested into their sport programs. Though I'm sure even if Washijo did something like that he'd be fine since he has such a good reputation for winning. It would have to be a coach that is only a few years into their stint as coach and a prestigious private school.
@tesshh1
@tesshh1 2 ай бұрын
@jacobherrera8735 OMG!!! just now, because of you mentioning other teams, I remember another school that does a switch with one of if not the best player (at least spiker) for the same exact reason, I had completely missed this!!! Spoiler for season 4: Inarizaki subs in Kita in the last of the secod set and win the set but then they do the same in the third set, and Kita in that set actually tells his coach it doesn't seem like a good idea, so it depends on the situation if it's a smart sub or not, later the coach takes full responsibility with his mistake agreeing with Kita but he doesn't look worried of being fired, so I guess it doesn't happen in high school, at least not if you take the team to nationals twice the same year
@jacobherrera8735
@jacobherrera8735 2 ай бұрын
@@tesshh1 to be fair to high school coaches, there is a coach in the show, I for the life of me can't remember who it was, said that they only get a few years with each class of players, so they have to make the most of each year. Basically, every few years, they have completely new kids, so it's so easy for powerhouses to fall off, because who once made them powerhouses are no longer at the school. With this in mind, it makes sense why high school coaches wouldn't really worry about making calls like this because they have to take risky plays to get results since they don't have years and years to build chemistry amongst the team, they get the one or two tournaments in the year.
@tesshh1
@tesshh1 2 ай бұрын
@@jacobherrera8735 Yeah, it was Washijo, after I read that explanation I actually agreed more with his way of thinking, of course you'll want players who are already dimonds when every year it's a different team, especially in Japan with just three years, sometimes the teams change in the same year because the seniors leave to study. I agree that high school coaches should have more freedom with their choices

i just really like the Shiratorizawa third years' friendship 😭😭 we get more of Tendou's and Ushijima's interactions with Semi and Leon in the manga, but what we do get in the anime is really wholesome because even though they all know Ushijima is stoic, Tendou is... quirky, and Semi is hotheaded, they all still accept each other and love each other. they even address's e/o using their first names. their bond is actually quite underrated!

@@NoahMcGuire Yeah, what's really confusing about the translation error in this scene (although that's par for the course for Haikyu on Crunchyroll) is how obviously it hit the block before going out, so how did the translator even get it wrong?

@@mikkosimonen asian languages are heavily contextual, i listened to the japanese dialogue again and heard that the guy said "touched a bit" without any subject (which is a very common thing to do even outside of japanese, just an asian thing in general), of course he meant it touched Tsukki's hand, so the translator was probably a bit less experienced with non-standard japanese sentence structures

IF you want an honest opition about pauses, here is my personal view on this: Obivously you guys are the main characters in this whole experience, and you do what is best for you, thats a given. For me as a viewer, when, for example, someone is talking off-topic during an emotional moment, it breaks the moment. If it is paused during the "rise" of emotions - it breaks the moment. Any kind of entertainment is all about these waves of emotions, and the "collective" or shared emotions with others. In this episode the pauses, in my opinion, were right on point. They should be done, during natural transitions of anime, and during cooldown moments between spikes of emotions. Now its not easy doing it, if you are watching for the first time, becase you dont know what is behind the corner ("is the moment over, or is there a big moment, right the next second?). At the same time, in a normal scenario, we will feel similar emotions, so when you decide to pause, it will often be "good time" because we are "on the same wave". Its always all about synchonization of emotions - thats the ultimate experience. (thats why people go to stadiums to watch games). We are watching it with you, but you are watching it without us, which makes it more nuanced. We watch a pre-recorded experience, and the interraction that is happening sort of goes through time itself. In the end, you guys create the content, and if not for you, we wouldnt have it at all. I am sure you enjoy sharing it, and you are gettin your own positive experience from these interractions, but still, thank you for sharing your experience. Its not over yet, but its been an incredible journey so far, and I cant believe that we are slowly finishing season 3!

The difference between Kageyama and Ushijima are coaches and training: Ushijima is used to play at National level, probably attending 4 National competitions since the start of high school (not even counting junior high), playing some of the best teams in the nation, Kageyama has 0 experience with that. Also, let's take into account he's two years older than Kageyama which means more experience overall. The last point is coaches: Ushijima is the central focus in Shiratorizawa, Washijo (his coach) entire plan relies on him, while Ukai is more open to change and try new things. So no, Ushijima will not be subbed till he's spitting blood or something his coach justify jajaj

Not to mention he didn't get much practice in junior high. The beautiful thing is to watch Hinata grow and become better. He always evolve and become better.

The move with Suga starting instead of Kageyama reminded me of the finale of 2020 olympics where ROC replaced captain Kobzar with Pankov as the starting setter.

tendou is the perfect character to contrast with ushijima, both in terms of personality and play style. also, the way that both of them had someone say something to them as kids that build their way of going about life and follow their own path 😢😢

This episode made me adore Tendo. Weird as he is, he is literally the only character in the series that treats Ushijima like a person, not a volleyball asset. There is a streak of kindness in him that is nice to watch.

One moment where I really identified with Ushiwaka was when he was just like "oh, it's fine" about his parents' divorce. I'm autistic so I relate to him in other ways too, but when my parents told us they were getting a divorce my siblings were shocked and crying while I was just "okay, can I go now? I have other stuff to do."

14:12 that's why Shiratowrizawa's coach deserve at least a bit of respect. He said it before, I don't care if you don't fit it before, or if you're weird, if you corrispond to what I think are strong player (so already high skilled player) then for me you're on the team. Also, I add, with taking in considerations Japanese society, where being different is still seen more as a bad thing "the stick that stick out must put in" (horrible translation by me btw) but that gives the idea. Tendo is different and was not going to fit. But in truth I think those are the person that will be champions.

I would rather he pauses than miss the scenes, lol. Regarding starting Suga... Well, it might not make sense on the volleyball side, but it makes sense on the storytelling, lol, cause of the third years and this might be their last game...
@tesshh1

Yes and no, sure, because they are third years Suga gets more moments, but if you read the manga you know that doesn't matter to Suga or Furudate (can't explain further in case you haven't read it)

I don’t know if you guys have see the aythor’s individual comments for each characters. If not , I suggest you see them. These words perfectly interpret the characters’ personalities. Tendo’s word is “愉快” which means “Happy”. Tsuki’s word is “理智“ which means “Sane”. The author gave most of characters these words. I think once you understand these words , you understand these characters. (English is not my native language, so sorry for my bad descriptions)

With Tendo a lot of it is also how he wants to improve or if he wants to improve at all. If his goals are to have fun matches you maybe dont wanna get to the next level.

25:00 Well a little before but I just want to comment on the pauses. I love the pausing to comment, to me pauses are great so I can both listen to your thoughts and I know missing anything is harder when you pause before speaking. It also lets episodes have a nice length, it's always a little sad when one ends and I have to wait another week.

Keep in mind Suga is a 3rd year. This is his LAST year of volleyball. This is potentially the last game of the year. From a winning focus it may make sense to keep Kageyama in. But from a high school play time stand point, it makes sense why they put Suga in. ❤

If you read the manga you know that doesn't matter to Suga or Furudate (can't explain further in case you haven't read it) Sure, because they are third years Suga gets more moments than most bench players but in the long run it's more realistic, again if you read the manga

I love how Haikyu doesn't have "villains" in the series. Some may be framed as villainous in the beginning (ie Tsukishima, Oikawa, Ushijima) but there's never really any "bad blood" between them. Obviously sports anime are different from other "shonen" anime like Demon Slayer in that people aren't killed in sports anime, but it's not uncommon to have actual bad/antagonistic people in sports anime.

I feel like they should've started with Suga on the 4th set, but Ukai thought that Kageyama would be able to keep playing at top performance during all five sets, he took that risk with Kageyama' stamina or he just wasn't thinking of that. So now when they got to the fifth set and Kageyama is extremely exhausted, coach goes for another risky play by letting Kags rest for a while so he can perform at 120% when he comes in again
