Love how this looks, 3 steps and setting the on-2. I feel like I've been scrambling for short serves all along, now that I've seen this. Definitely going to incorporate this when I get playing again. Also good reminder to avoid the tomahawk on serve receive... sometimes I feel handcuffed with nothing else to do, but really I just need to work on stepping back more quickly. Thanks guys!

Really glad you liked it, Jeff. The option off a short serve is such a great play - let us know how it goes!

You make it look easier than it is (haha). When the ball is coming fast, it's hard to react with your feet.

One thing I would mention is not having a super wide stance pre serve. I see a lot of indoor players having a super wide stance and not able to make a quick first step. Great video!

One of the hardest parts as a beginner! Could you guys possibly help us out with a setter video on pokeys, when to pokey, and a beach version of a setter dump? Lol I’m a beginner and as a setter i can’t always get those sets up for the spike although i am practicing!

Hey there, setting is one of the hardest skills to master in beach volleyball! We have tons of setting videos in our 30 Day Setting Blueprint: www.betteratbeach.com/howtosetavolleyball! All you have to do is sign up for our Online Coaching Program, The Elite Performers Tribe (www.betteratbeach.com/coaching). We take you through the basics and then work all the way up to pursuit path, foot sequencing, rhythm and advanced offensive play sets so you put every ball in the perfect spot for your hitter.

I was really hoping this wouldn’t require strength and agility in my legs. Lolol. Great info. Going to try and get better at the lunge as I have the bad habit of droning to both knees
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
Haha unfortunately strength, speed and mobility are super important for improving your beach volleyball skills! One quick tip - if you have to drop to a knee its better to only put 1 down instead of both because you're more mobile from there and get can up quicker! You might like our 60 Day Max Vertical Program www.betteratbeach.com/60DayMaxVerticalJump which will not only increase your vertical jump, but also improve general strength and agility!

I also think that getting to the ball diagonally across the court after your partner has had a tough receive that goes straight forward to close the net is REALLY common and absolutely does my head in. I would love to know the footwork involved to getting good on those!
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
Those can be tough! Watching the right things can help you predict where your partner's pass will go, and then you can get there more quickly. As soon as you know the serve is going to your partner and not you, take your eyes off the ball and watch your partner. The angle of their platform and where the serve hits them will give you information about where their pass is going to go. Vision, like any skill, takes time to develop, but after a while you will feel as though you're getting to those passes more easily because you are predicting when they are going to happen!

Mark - nice one 👍👍 Question: for the short serve on that side of the court - wouldn´t it be better to always end up with the right foot upfront ? you´ve got some slo-mos where you end up with the left...
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Great question - if on the right side and the serve moves you to the middle, you're going to want to take your first step with your left foot, so if you use all three steps, you will end up with your left foot forward. This is completely fine because you will be able to pass the ball straight up, which is what you want to do on a short middle serve. If the serve moves you to the right sideline and you have to take a knee, you'd want your right foot forward so you can freely set an angle with your platform and pass the ball back towards the middle of the court without your left leg being in the way.

Man I gotta ditch my tomahawk serve receive. I've been doing that a lot lately on sharp floats.
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
We hear ya, it can be easy to fall back on it! But we should rarely have to use a tomahawk on serve receive. Check out our free drill book so you can practice how to move your feet on those high, deep serves and not have to tomahawk! www.betteratbeach.com/freebeachvolleyballdrillbook

Why no overhead digs? I find it much easier to slap the ball with both my palms, but I rarely see pros do so
@randomdudewholikesanime19853 жыл бұрын
If the serve isn’t extreme hard driven an fast, it’s pretty easy to double touch with an overhand dig, especially in beach volleyball. If it’s a deep serve but not especially hard driven, it often gives you more control and is safer to pass with your platform, rather than risk a double from overhead. In some leagues, it’s also just completely illegal to serve receive overhand with both hands Edit: this is my explanation for why professionals often don’t pass overhand. If you’re playing casual with friends you’re completely fine receiving like that and don’t need to worry about ref calls. Edit number two: later in the video he talks about how you don’t want to tomahawk in serve receive. This is similar to passing overhand, except you food your hands over each other. Since your hands are folded over each other, the ref isn’t able to call a double on this move, but it also gives you much less control. In general, try to pass with your platform
@thelegion053 жыл бұрын
@@randomdudewholikesanime1985 I do intend to take advantage of the double touch rule on first contact when overhead passing tho. Id consider almost any serve that goes long "hard driven." Its also far easier to control for me then turning around and hitting the ball backwards with my platform tho I see alot of sand players here do so. I guess itd normally be up to the ref, but I play with friends atm until im good enough for a league
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
While you can overhead receive a serve you, have to be very careful not to double - slapping the ball with two unconnected hands seems tough to consistently not double. Also, you generally have much more control passing with your platform than overhead. You might like our free drill book to try out some passing drills to help you receive more serves with your platform! www.betteratbeach.com/freebeachvolleyballdrillbook
@betteratbeachvolleyball3 жыл бұрын
When receiving a serve, a double contact is never legal! A double contact is only legal when digging a "hard-driven" ATTACK (not serve), although the rules actually say nothing about "hard-driven." It's actually only legal if it is a "reactionary" play, meaning the ball came at you so fast that you just reacted, you did not have time to think about it.
