Volume 9 is the Best Volume of RWBY.

RWBY Volume 9 has concluded, and with it being pretty much the best volume so far (mostly by default), it's interesting to see just how much it does well and how much it still managed to fumble. With a shorter episode count, more additions to the lore, a Ruby Rose character resolution, Bumblebee becoming canon, Jaune being a cool guy...there's a lot to talk about.

I loved that as the decades went by for jaune, he had such little of Pyrrhas fabric left, he could only use it as a hair tie. It felt a little symbolic and metaphorical as if it was the last bit of his sanity he had left in him to wait alone for his friends. To be fair to them, the whole volume was, what? Two, three days? Including volume 8, from their perspective, Ruby went from peppy to drinking the tea in less than a week. I can understand them thinking "ok, maybe she needs some time for herself" or not realizing how bad it had gotten to her.

At this point I'm not sure if you're just forgetting things or if you're intentionally getting things wrong since you don't like RWBY and want any excuse to dislike it.

@@goldsrc-l2m I’m not looking for excuses to dislike anything, I TRIED to like this volume but the way WBY acts is terrible here. Ruby faints and they leave her face down in the dirt until she wakes up where Yang asks if she’s ok once and Ruby ignores it. Weiss also tries next episode and she does the same and by the end of the next episode she’s very visibly not ok, except instead of Yang doing something like in volume 2 where she pulls Blake aside to talk to her when she notices she’s not ok, they sorta just somehow don’t notice or ignore it. Hell, Weiss also yells at her a few times the volume as if she just doesn’t notice she’s not in a good place (also I should mention it still feels weird no one else seemed to give a shit about penny dying) On episode 7 after she has a panic attack and almost dies then gets yelled at by Jaune and seems visibly afraid of the weapon she once held dear, as soon as the village gets flooded all three of them rush to Jaune and not only that but Weiss also seems to prompt Ruby to help comfort him as if nothing just happened to her. When she runs off only weiss seems to reflect on how things got to the point they did. When they find her lying on the floor bloodied and beat the fuck up with a vengeful murderer standing over her with a weapon drawn they walk up only to stop and stare for like 20 seconds before Ruby attempts basically suicide (im not gonna fault them for not stopping her from drinking the tea cause they didn’t know what it did but not trying to help or protect her from neo I can) After she does this they’re all EXTREMELY calm in the next episode (hell they don’t even mention Ruby until they teleport to the tree, god forbid we focus on that, no we need more comforting Jaune with really oddly placed smiles and group hugs) they get there, Yang seems to remember to be sad but Weiss and Blake talk like they’re honest to god ok with if Ruby comes out a different person which sorta made me sick. Then in the finale when she comes out no they do not talk about why she chose to do that or her mental state leading up to it and no one apologizes for anything. They hug, talk about Neo and Little and go through the door. Like I said this is a show I want to like and I was hopeful for the setup of this volume and it actually focusing more on the main team, but the way 3/4 of that team are portrayed here make them seem like really really bad friends to the other 1/4.

@@Jwoosle Jesus christ is any rwby critic capable of not writing an essay to get their thoughts across? Every other member of RWBY plus Jaune were also facing their own problems and they made a concentrated effort to check on Ruby and she brushed them off every single time. Those are the facts. I agree that episode 9 was weird cause of the time-skip, but the dialogue at the tree sounded more like WB realizing they couldn't do anything to stop her ascension instead of honestly believing Ruby should be allowed to ascend.

That was my thoughts exactly. She learned nothing. Failure after failure in volumes 7 and 8, most of which came from her own choices, yet she ultimately learned nothing. She was basically told that none of that matters and she should keep doing the same things she’s been doing. No growth, no change, nothing. I can forgive everything else in the last two episodes because of the season being cut short for the crossover, which may have been entirely out of CRWBY’s hands given it was likely a decision from the heads of RT, but Ruby’s arc was the focal point of the volume, and they flopped it at the end.

We're gonna have to wait till volume 10 to see how she's changed. I personally think lying to ironwood was justified and that her plan to let atlas fall was fine considering it was gonna get destroyed no matter what, so maybe we have different ideas on what her mistakes were.

One little thing that REALLY bugged me was the way not a single character acknowledged the fact that Jaune had been trapped on that island, alone, for what was likely DECADES. Like when they first reveal him there’s hardly any reaction from team RWBY regarding the time that’s passed, and there’s not a single conversation or even passing comment made about the psychological toll this must have taken on him. He is essentially a completely new character now, he has grown and evolved into something new, and the show did a good job of showing this both from a design and character standpoint. And yet, no one else in the show seems to pay any notice? I respect them not taking too much attention away from team RWBY with yet another Jaune centred arc, but still, the time skip as a concept had the potential to have a massive impact on his character and the way the group interacts with him, but instead of any of the girls being concerned for him or showing interest in becoming reacquainted with this new, older version of one of their best friends, they discard him as old and “not all there” with no hint of remorse or regret. It’s such a little detail, and I’m sure if they’d had more time to explore it they would have, but god it had me yelling at the screen. Other than that, I loved this volume. It was so nice to see the writers finally taking the time to explore these characters

I'm gonna be honest. For me, Volume 9 is entirely a whole can of wasted potential. It could have been so much better. But honestly, when Bumblebee became canon in the most impossible way ever, the canon story fell apart with me. When Ruby drank the tea and nobody stepped in to stop her, I ragequitted the show for a short time, until I heard about the ending... Which roughly made me laugh. Just to note yes it does seem like 1-2 episodes of the initial outline of this volume were cute from some stuff noticed in concept art (Summer's character sheet being listed as for Ep 11 so think the last act of the volume being yeah an extra episode) and some old VA comments (Sun's VA mentioning doing a short recording session for RWBY like a year and a bit ago at a con which.. obviously Sun wasn't in this volume so like they probably originally intended a short epilogue reunion scene with some other characters or something rather than just ending at them staring at Vauco and the Fleet).. but that wasn't cause of the JL crossover. That was totally seperate budget (it is why V9 took so long though since they were being produced by the same team co-courrently) V9 is short because one V8 was like 40 minutes longer than basically ever prior volume (V8 and V9 were budgeted together... for some reason) and the fact they were creating new assets at a rate that they don't normally do since they weren't staying in one place for long and it was a totally new setting meant V9s per episode cost was higher than prior volumes. But this was always going to be a shorter volume to some extent they said that like 3+ years ago. Basically it's all budget stuff that happened years ago and an underestimation of how many resources making shit for each location for V9 would take. the JL crossover was just something WB ordered a few years back and RT and DC had to play ball because that's having a mother company. But since it was a seperate order they allocated money for it as it's own thing.

As a RWBY fan? This volume was good overall. It had what a lot of people been asking for with Ruby's mental breakdown, amazing music and fights, our main characters being fleshed out a bit more. As a RWBY critic? This volume is barely not considered filler. All the problems Ruby and Jaune had were pretty much erased by the last two episodes, the volume being shorter definitely did more damage to the characters and the writing was just awful. As a fan I really want RWBY to have a proper ending and continue with a few more volumes but as a critic and how the show has been handled by the writers it looks like it will keep going downhill with only a few moments here and there that will make the good moments look better. Great video btw, I agree with some points and disagree with others but that's just why we need conversation then going after eachothers throats like the fanatics and haters of the show.

This comment section is what I expected from RWBY discourse! Anyways, I mostly agree with your analysis. Vol 9 has some of RWBY's best scenes. Some more out of Neo and some more out of Alyx would have definitely helped, but I think the thing that makes this volume go from "good but I might like Vol 3 more" to "this is one of the best seasons of TV I've ever seen" is Ruby experiencing more of Summer Rose's backstory, like you mentioned an entire episode for it, or seeing an episode's worth of other types of memories from the past that more smoothly progresses her from the worst mental state she's been in to feeling like herself again. The big thing going forward, like you mentioned, is making sure the cast acts as if they've gone through the events of Vol 9.

I just finished binging through volumes 7, 8 and 9 last weekend to catch up after putting it on hold for years and honestly speaking I enjoyed it a lot, these latest volumes were way better then I thought they’d be. Especially 8 and 9. I wasn’t actually expecting much cause I did kinda just forget about RWBY for awhile and wasn’t really the biggest fan to begin with, I never really was that attached enough to actually critique the series, just kinda picked it up and watched it for fun back around 2015 I believe and it was just one of those shows that I kept watching randomly throughout the years. I also wasn’t really interested enough to get involved with the community side of things and all that as well, so I never gave my overall thoughts about it that much cause it really ain’t my thing. I just watch things for the enjoyment of it. Although I have to admit that I got very invested in the storyline again once I was half way through volume 7. I didn’t expect to binge through all three volumes but I just couldn’t stop once I started. Anyways I think it was a great watch and I’m interested to see a volume 10 and how the story will progress if they keep going

Volume 9 was absolutely incredible, both in animation and writing, at least compared to some... other volumes. But I think one of the main reasons is because it's a self-contained story that has little to nothing to do with Salem and the relics. I just think the self-contained narrative made for a much better story. It's kind of a shame to hear that the best volume in the series was compromised by a superhero crossover, though.

I hate the Justice League movie with a passion, but stating that it subtracted episodes from the volume is just factually incorrect. Volume 9 was delayed on account of the films (since production had to be paused), but the scripts was already completed years ago, and each chapter is handled by a slightly different writing arrangement; meaning it's likely those workloads were devised well in advance. Every internal perspective I've seen has repeated the same information: Volume 9 was a crunch-free production, and it was not shortened or otherwise influenced by the Justice League films. The only major side-effect of this overlap was a 3-year production cycle as opposed to the typical single year. Besides, Volume 9's episodic structure is rather indicative of the intended chapter count, since each chapter largely consists of one major idea or location: Chapter 1: Hunter Mice Chapter 2: Jinxy Peddler Chapter 3: Red Prince Chapter 4: Herbalist Chapter 5: Marketplace Chapter 6: Punder Storm Chapter 7: Paper Village Chapter 8: Mad Hatter's Tea Party Chapter 9/10: The Tree (Eddy Rivas cited that these chapters were intended to be a two-parter)

Honestly yeah, all my issues with the volume could be easily solved with an additional 3-4 episodes. As for Volume 10... I think the writing will be good, they've definitely improved but the reason this volume was so good because it didn't have to focus on dozens of characters and Volume 10... I don't hate the show, I love the show so much that I don't want it to settle for mediocre. Although I don't think the Monty vision is a great thing to say, We must remember that while we lost a great man with a great big dream, Crwby lost a friend that shared the vision with them. Even if Monty said these four have a sister love to each other when asked about romance. I am over the Yang/ Sun thing with Blake now, its been devolved at least a little bit. The jabberwalker's job is to replace the brother who was responsible for destruction, when he left he needed to leave a creation which would fulfil the purpose he had. That's why it kills and denies rebirth. Something that this volume cleared up is the idea that the two brothers are very much not gods in terms of being omnipotent, or perfect- they're basically people with flaws like people who make mistakes and are able to be tricked. I actually liked how they handled the god stuff. Imo volume 9 was easily the best season In the past 5 volumes, I hope they continue in this vein.

What I hate about season 9. (Yes I say "season" deal with it.) Is that it's well thought out (in the terms of creative world building and battle choreography) ... That doesn't sound like something people should hate, but when it's added with the context that the very well thought arc it's essentially just a FILLER ARC!!! Aside from the whole Yang-x-Blake fan-pleasing thing that happened. NOTHING OF ANY VALUE RESULTED! Ruby, is basically back to her go-lucky self, after what essentially is basically God, told her, she can overcome her internally struggle of very warranted uselessness by just being herself... WHICH WAS THE MAIN F**KING PROBLEM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ARC! Jaune, was legit my favorite part. My man legit got on his off-screen glow up time and came back stronger, more mature and with a better haircut (GOODBYE DISCOUNT BANANA HAIR!) Hell, they even made the brother go through an extreme traumatizing experience. But nah, let's just revert Jaune back his pre-puberty self that will probably now act the way he did in season 8. Yang and Blake... What about Yang and Blake? Oh you mean the whole the fanfic relationship that finally became canon? Yeah aside from that, ain't nothing happened Weiss?... Legit, what about Weiss? They could legit bring a cardboard cut out of Weiss and the season would have gone exactly the same. Neo. Okay let's make the mute with no personality and ice-cream hair star as this seasons main Villain... That didn't suffer any form of defeat or removal. NEED I SAY ANYTHING ELSE! I spent my time watching an arc, that pretty much just left off, the same way it started. Cinder is still up in the real world, doing her POWER-thing. And it's up to RWBY+Jaune to stop them. Season 9 may have been relatively "good." But f**k the writers for not doing anything with the story cept wasting my time in wetdream land and Ruby winning over depression with the help of God... Great job guys.

tbh i mostly think a lot of details were unnecessary in this volume. Like when Yang argued that they never asked Ruby to be perfect, and that's the end of the argument. Bro, is she that stubborn that she can't see how her inactions led to this happening? Then Ruby comes back from the tree and Jaune goes "She knew what she needed to be all along"??? Like no, she didn't, that's the whole point. And i honestly feel like they should've all apologized to Ruby after she basically committed suicide, i'm sorry but a group hug is not enough. Aside from that, i don't believe they will regress Jaune's development (some say the gray hairs a proof of that, and ok ig whatever). Tbh i would've felt really bad for him if he had his youth taken away from him because of a dumb mistake (which is something that is never mentioned btw. The show spins it as "Alyx's mistakes led to Jaune being the way he is right now", when in reality he went through all he did because of a plot device in the form of a clock fruit??????? because the plot needed him to be older for him to experience trauma. But apparently it may not even matter, because several years could've passed in Remnant, while they were in wonderland. I GUESS WE'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER 3-4 YEARS ugh

I will ALWAYS think that Volume 3 is the absolute best of RWBY. RWBY has always struggled with identity. And with Monty's old style of make the fights and have the writers tie them together made the writing sloppy in Volumes one and 2. But once Volume 3, the writing suddenly becomes refined and RWBY finally feels like it knows what it wants to be, but sadly Monty died during production and corruption starts to take over the company, leaving rwby to have it's growth smothered. Volume 9 helped rediscover what the characters are, but the story still doesn't seem to know what it wants to be.

1:56 Maybe this is a hot take, but I loved S1-3 soundtrack, S4 theme was cool don't remember soundtrack as much. People are allowed to have different opinions I guess. Still it bothers me a bit when people say it supposed to be anime, shit I love anime but I think RWBY is like Avatar: The Last Airbender inspired by anime but it's own unique style. The art, music, and script of the show didn't follow typical anime structures tropes etc. for better or worse. (Also Jeff William is a great director (producer? is that the right word?) and I'm pretty sure his daughter was pretty young when she made those first few songs so maybe cut some slack). All this said, I think the new direction is better than no direction, if this is what they gotta do to make the show good I'll swallow the bitter pill. At the end of Rwby if there is one coherent story that ties together the story (which has been shaky so far) and the characters are enjoyable (and developed) it'll be a win. Yet, I think there RWBY is still missing something? Maybe it's my nostalgia (for Monty), or because the series never being able to hit a stride because 1 good season will drowned out my 'bad' or at the very least mediocre seasons preceding and proceeding it. Probably something else I can't describe?

When V9 was first released, I didn't care at all about the volume nor give a shit about it. However after chapter 2 I got so interested and especially when I watched chapter 3 I was in! Imo best volume with the best chapter being chapter 8 Tea amidst terrible trouble. So many chapters could've been my absolute favorite and that has never happened since v3or even v6. The only thing I wished was after Ruby's ascension she would be insane, unhinged, with tyrian style type of fighting, long FUCKING HAIR AND NEW DESIGN LMAO. However, the route they chose was also amazing so I'm not TOOOO mad. I hope in the crossover, the end credit scene is a v10 with team RWBY with new designs or something else in vacuo idk lol. From what I've heard, vol 10 hasn't even been green lit. Vol 9 might actually be the last volume, which is one of the biggest reason why I even tune in for it. To see if it was worth coming back to the show, I literally didn't even watch the last 4 volumes. Even I think this was the best volume so far because I was aware to extent of what happen prior. I always had this problem with RWBY, it has so much potential but the writing always holds it back. And this volume showed hints of that potential even more so than previous volumes.

Like sure it looks nice but there is plot hole issues, behaviors don't match up all the time, they chose the laziest way to make bumblebee a thing. 15:12 Right So I questioned this as well back when Chapter 6 was new in a post and someone else made a follow up post on that with a clip that explains what happened to those innocent people from the Volume 8 commentary. Turns out the writers straight up confirmed that Cinder just killed hundred people with just that exposition only. How we never saw those corpses or even Penny’s…I have no idea, fuck you dead people I guess. But it makes Blake’s “But we got everyone out safely” line in chapter 6 really strange because She was there and saw those people die instantly right before her eyes and doesn’t know the fate of the rest including her friends that didn’t fall but the last one could be Blake trying to be positive.

Who is the character whose voice work you are impressed with? Yeah the VA was very good. Lindsay killed it as Ruby. They managed to bonotrén make her sound annoying and ep. 8 with her despair was genuinely hard to hear. Robbie is amazing as always . He must have love doing his laughs and theatrics as the cat. Blake and Yang confession is so sweet and their voice work was a big part of that. Even if it was for a short while. Billy’s performance as Torchwick was great. He manages to be 100x better than Grey with a few lines. That last line gets me because of his death.

Tbh ruby did get a powerup, if you didn't realize ruby got a lot faster and a lot more skilled than before, the furious cat was literally destroying WBY and jaune but when she came back the tables turned, she was just soloing the furious cat and pushing him away, she also seemed to have better reflexes since she got surprised by one of the cat's attacks but still dodged it with a threating smile and sniping the cat on head lmao, she did get a power up but not from her semblance but from her skills because she got rid of the depression she had and turned it into strength.

yeah the DC crossover movie was kinda meh, only parts I actually liked were the parts with Jaune and Lantern. As for Volume 9 I just enjoyed it, I like dark character arcs, like the previous 2 volumes with Ironwood turning into a villain slowly till he's straight up unhinged, seeing Ruby getting beat down to all hell only to game over herself and come back like "actually nah, *me* is good." was such a good arc for me. Only thing that had me like "hmmm" was the gang being all smiley when they head back to Jaune's flooded village, y'all just watched Ruby game end herself y'all should be processing. Also Blake and Yang are cute as hell.

It's hard for me to say which of the girls I like best, It;s a hard tell. Ruby herself must be physically stronger than she looks, swinging around that big ass Scythe like it's nothing. Maybe Yang is my favorite, gotta like our Firecracker, and the sisterhood she and Ruby share, volume 9 maybe a bad example but i did watch boba episode of Beyond that kind of makes up for that. Wiess getting her Summoning down. And Blake the shadow ninja, and her connection to Yang, see it all comes back to Yang for me. Penny, I maybe be slightly pissed that she is now gone, maybe with more volumes if RWBY continues at some point, maybe we will see her again. One can hope. Nora and Ren, glad they found one another, as kids and as a couple. Jean D'arc interesting what they did with his semblance. And lastly, I want to know more about Summer Rose and Silver eyed warriors!
