Applying a tourniquet to keep blood from flowing out of the torso starves whatever is downstream of it. There is no resetting a broken leg. You use the tourniquet to SACRIFICE the leg to save somebody from bleeding out.

I am really praying for all their massive PTSD and inherited trauma that no doubt may be passed down to future generations :( just watching the videos of the shelling and dead day in and day out has given me a small level of trauma compared to what they’re living and breathing. They will have the courage to get through it bc there just is no other choice right now :( it’s a horrible situation to be in and I do not envy it! My mom has been in hospital for months now, and the earliest 2 months every single day every single hour things changing dramatically by the house has been like life and death for me, she almost passed more than once. Trench warfare is when both sides dig trenches and face off against each other with a No Man's Land between them. These trenches are a standard defensive tactic.

The Ukrainians are not really letting this turn into trench warfare per se. They are using the best of both worlds method of digging in with their less professional force, while attacking the flanks with they best units. They are taking good care of losing as little of their troops as possible while inflicting a maximum of losses to the enemy. Most times, this requires retreating once you've hit the enemy. When the enemy lines have been weakened enough, you then move your own lines up, rince and repeat. ;) Since this strategy requires great unit-level situational awareness and adaptive command capability, the Russians with their strict trop-down command style can't use the same tactics.

@de caesaris I meant that Russia is fine with capturing the strategic targets this war was about in the first place (Eastern and Southern oil/gas fields), and declaring "peace" since assaulting Kiev would cause too many casualties and civilian deaths. Don't play stupid. The whole idea of trench defenses in the 21st century is laughable. Modern mechanized armies can just maneuver around and cutoff the defensive line, if not ignore it completely. The sole reason it is still standing right now is because no one is seriously considering further developing the battlefield while "peace talks" are in session.

I've watched many videos on tourniquets and what this woman said taught me things that I've not yet heard. She's right about how quickly someone can bleed out.

Yeah the problem with tourniquets is that people don’t realise just how tight they need to be, and if you don’t do them tight enough they’ll actually cause you to bleed more than not using one at all. It needs to be so tight it cuts off the circulation, not just restricts it. And you also need to write the time you put the tourniquet on on either the affected limb or (on an unconscious person) on the forehead. If it’s on the limb for too long and they take it off it can cause the person to die from shock (hence an amputation is often needed after a long use of a tourniquet) but at least the person is still alive.

I am glad more older men are volunteering. As an older gent myself, I feel my death would be less tragic now than if I had died 30 years ago. An older guy leaves behind a wife and kids, maybe even grandkids. But at least he had kids. A young guy dies, he leaves no kids, just grieving parents. If I were in charge, I'd be drafting 30-40 year olds. People who've got kids and assets to fight for. People who lived a little bit more of life. Dying at 18 feels more tragic than dying at 40. A 40 year old can pull a trigger just as well as an 18 year old.

Waging war is physically taxing and elder folks do have greater risk of injury and most likely are not as fit than young ones. That makes them quite unsuited for really dangerous tasks. During WW1 Italian Arditi and German Sturmtruppe exclusively recruited unmarried, young men because they would be most recklessly courageous and they had most "to prove". Then again most lethal sniper of all time was in his early thirties. Guns make physical attributes less important.

Ukraine has a regular professional army of 200,000 plus 50,000 Special Forces heavy in sniper units, and a 200,000 reserve force... They have mobilized their first Territorial Defense of 200,000 riflemen who are now trained with anti-tank weapons. They have 20,000 foreign volunteer military experts/fighters. They are currently raising their Second Territorial Defense with another 200,000. These are all uniformed regular troops organized into infantry battalions under professional military commanders and connected to intelligence and the supply chain. 670,000 men currently, going up to 870,000 in the next two weeks. This does not include Ukrainians who go on "safari".

I am starting to see a clear (and quite intelligent) pattern. It looks like the Ukrainian high command is replacing professional army and security forces in fixed defensive positions with volunteer fighters. That frees up their best troops to make counter attacking possible. Once this reorganization is completed, they should be able to operate two independent forces, preserving their defensive capabilities while gaining offensive operational options. Let's hope they can put that flexibility to good use in the coming weeks. :) SLAVA UKRAYINI !!!

While in the last weeks of WWII Germany was facing imminent defeat and had run out of regular army, had no offensive capability anymore and could only send its people to die senselessly, that's not the case in Ukraine at all. As I clearly stated, in fact Ukraine is faced with the complete opposite situation: They are over performing against the Russians and are realizing that they could in fact start using the basic NATO doctrine of holding defensive positions (economy of force principle) while mounting encirclement maneuvers. This consists on a series of lightning quick, surgical attacks on the weaker flanks of the enemy positions, taking great care not to over-extend. Most of the time, you do not move your defensive lines, but instead chip away at the enemy until its own lines crumble. Then you finally move your defensive lines and repeat the same process. That's why you don't need your best troops in your defensive positions. Because you are forcing the enemy to divest its own offensive capabilities to repel attacks. This however requires excellent independent unit-level management, which is completely alien to Russian doctrine. So the Ukrainians are proving here that they've quickly turned their doctrine around in the last 8 years and have benefitted immensely from NATO-aligned countries input on defense reorganization.

Just hold a press conference - designate the air corridor to Mariupol publicly in ALPHA mode (Schwarzkopf still around?) ITS UKR AIRSPACE!! - load up 4 C17s to max w air drop aid. Have overkill 12 F22 - USE RAPTORS AND TYPHOONS (both for kinetic intimidation and visuals - (they be gorgeous)) - high cover for any air to air threat - plus historic images of our best standing for freedom and light in face of evil and darkness forever eternal - ITS WHY WE HAVE THESE FING THINGS - for RIGHT NOW) - F35s low cover to defend against SAMs - UKR ground forces repeatedly clear corridor as well - ALPHA make clear any Russian SAM batteries in corridor or fighters that enters corridor will be killed but otherwise F22s Typhoons and F35s purely defensive - only fly win corridor - only there to ensure C17s can deliver humanitarian aid safely to SAVE LIVES. Berlin airlift is precedence. C17s will roll. 100,000 plus lives saved? guys......remember this.....Quick Clot directly into wound, dressing over that, direct pressure & Elevation. Then Tourniquet should be used when the bleeding cannot be stopped by the use of direct pressure alone, or if direct pressure cannot be effectively applied for any reason.
