Does your volvo 240 have sloppy shifter feel? Can you shake it a lot when in gear?
There are only 3 locations for shifter bushings on these cars. I’m sorry I didn’t get into much detail on number 3, at the base or the shifter ball. But when I do, expect a video linked here.
Thanks for watching! Give up your thumbs!

So jealous of your junkyard. I'd kill for your Volvo parts emporium. Nice work as always.

No kidding as in Anaheim Calif.Pic a Parts, 5 within a half hour drive( great), the not so great( may be out in the lot for as little as 3 weeks, and never longer than 6 weeks, the awful($$ prices with" L.K.Q." are insane& you have to purchase a warranty, to return shit parts( the insane) try buying a" MA F" for 48.00& warranty for $15.00 more! This is a joke& on us, not them.

Hey David! They're not the most budget-friendly but the STS Machining bronze bushings are worth every penny in improving shifter feel. I swapped a 225k mile M46 into my 740, and the difference between the old plastic bushings and new bronze was nothing short of incredible. Those, coupled with some two-piece 80D polyurethane shifter cage bushings I turned on a lathe, took all the guess work out of shifting and made it feel better than it probably felt new. If you have any interest in a set of poly shift cage bushings give me a shout and I'll see if I can't make a few more!

I've been enjoying these Volvo videos for a few weeks now. My brother had a 1966 122S with duel SU-6's I believe, and he let me have it for a few months while he was doing a rotation at a distant hospital. I drove it from Boston, all over New Hampshire and Maine as well as down to Cape Cod. A few years later I bought a 1970 142 in San Diego and rebuilt the twin Stromberg Zenith carbs. I almost burned up the car for not tightening the fuel lines between the carbs correctly. I added a new fuel pump and then broke a drive shaft. I had to take the bus to the junk yards in the barrio to buy a used drive shaft. I rebuilt the universals and was okay for a while. I think I had an exhaust leak and was getting ready to work on that when it was rear ended while parked in the middle of the night. A hit and run in front of my girlfriends house. I sold it for $50 to an outfit that hauled it away. After that it was Japanese for me. A Datsun 710 wagon for a long time and then a brand new Toyota PU. After a few years my 5-speed shifter became sloppy, just like what you're dealing with now. I was advised it was the clutch and changed that at 88K. Didn't fix the issue. I located a Toyota specialist (not a dealer) and he advised that the cups were probably bad. He did the job for a very reasonable price and it was what the doctor ordered. Nice, clean shifting after that. (Toyota shifting is known for "clicking" or "popping" into each gear with some sort of detent. Sometimes they'll pop out of gear if they haven't been fully engaged properly. It wasn't at all like the Datsun or Volvo manual transmissions I had known. I even drove a friends Saab 96 for a time with 3 on the column and didn't have that type of engagement pop. That was a fun car in the snowy mountain winters of PA!) Anyway, I think the cup replacement will go a long ways to tightening up the slop you're getting in the shifter. Like your Volvo, the Toyota was a simple access from the top, remove the retaining mechanism, pull the shift stick out directly from the transmission and replace the cups. (You may have to monkey with the linkage since your shifter doesn't go directly into the transmission.) I'm now having some dreams of getting an old Volvo and maybe try my hand at some restoration work. I drove with a friend (his dad's Volvo 242) for three months exploring the West, Rocky Mt's from Montana into Mexico and then on up into the Sierra Nevada of California. Car camping for all but three nights. Good times! Great videos and best of luck!

David, I always enjoy watching you work on 240s. It's funny how I'll watch one of your videos and see you end up coming up with the exact solution (and result) that I've tried. My shifter on my M47 is fairly sloppy, and I also added a washer on one side of the shift lever. It helped, but I still have slop. I suspected wear at that coupling where the linkage goes into the transmission, but haven't tried replacing it yet. I am eager to see if replacing the cup parts helps, in your case. I'll be watching eagerly!

Neil Cato thanks Neil! I absolutely think it’s that cup. It’s got slop in all three axis of rotation so it’s a good indicator the cup needs replacing. My bmw is the same. But much harder to find the volvo part new and not expensive aftermarket

Those grommet often go out, especially the one at the firewall, which makes the clutch cable grind the clutch when shifting.

My 4 speeds slop is just the right amount for me. All the gears are easy to find since i know how the sloppiness is. I just recently bought a five speed 244 and good lord its basically in neutral in all 5 gears. Shifted like a dream when you found em tho. I love these automobiles

There should be an O-ring to space the bushings out. I had the same slop in my shifter. I replaced the cup bushing and it fixed it, in combo with new plastic bushings under the shifter

There is a cylinder between the shaft from the gearbox and the shiftstick. take out the cylinder and put in a bolt with a locking nut and you'll definitely get a solid shifter. I did it on my 740 with and m47 and it worked like a charm.

Hey David! Great work. I've watched a bunch of your videos...SUPER HELPFUL! I ahve a '89 240 Manual trans myself and I've done a ton of work on her and still need more! I'm currently trying to replace the bushings on the shifter linkages, for the ball and socket part and the bottom part that attaches to fork with the pin. For the life of me I cannot get that pin out! Watched this video and yours was way less rusty than mine and looked like it was moving a bit to begin with...mine isn't budging either way. Wondering if you could recommend anything before I end up pulling out the whole trans to get at it with a punch. thanks and keep up the videos!!

If you cut and extend the part on the shifter under the ball you get shorter throw, you also get less play:)

Ya could try replacing the pins in the coupler which was the main source of sloppiness in my M47 (Which I have since blown up and replaced with M46) but I'm not sure if you can do it with it in the car. My old pins were visibly worn down on the ends. I think you can find new ones on Tascaparts.

I made the same erroneous conclusion about those shift cage bushings too. It turns out those upper and lower ball socket bushings at the base of the shifter are the cause. The process is def extraneous as the whole shifter has to come apart but so it goes.

hmm usually the biggest problem is the nylon bushings on the end of the shifter. you replacement as a tiny bit of wear on them makes the shifter impossible to use. some of us have even made new of bras. stil it is a comon problem and you dont shim it or anything. you replace.

5th gear overdrive not working. Might be the ground wire on the tranny. I had that problem and found it after I replaced the switch , sylenoid and wire.

Cut the little eyelet off the bottom of the shifter ball and weld in about .5in to .75in of a metal rod and you'll raise up the the pivot point.

There is supposed to be an o-ring in that shifter union you guys were pulling apart in the yard. #11 in this diagram. imgur.com/787idrq If that is dried up, or missing it is supposed to be a big cause of sloppy shifter.
