Volvo 850 R BTCC ex Rydell on track

During the last edition of the Mugello Motor Fest has made ​​its appearance this beautiful and ex Rickard Rydell official Volvo 850 R BTCC. A rarity and an unexpected surprise to see run the car in the racing cars time sessions. In the hands of Rydell the Volvo 850 R won the English Touring car championship in 1998 and in 1995 the driver made 13 pole position in 24 races!
Strangely, the season of the 850 series began in collaboration with TWR in 1994 using the station-wagon variant that behaved fairly well. Since 1995, it passed to employ a sedan with good results until it reaches the BTCC title in 1998. The car is equipped with a 5-cylinder 2000 CC with more than 290 hp and 6-speed sequential gearbox. As you can see extensive use of carbon fiber inside and pneumatic system for lifting.
Durante l'ultima edizione del Mugello motor Fest ha fatto la sua comparsa questa splendida Volvo 850 R BTCC ex Rickard Rydell, una vera rarità ed un'inaspettata sorpresa vederla girare nei turni dedicate alle auto da corsa. Auto ex ufficiale, in mano a Rydell la Volvo 850 R ha vinto nel 1998 il campionato inglese turismo e nella stagione 1995 partì dalla pole su 24 gare! Stranamente la stagione agonistica della serie 850 iniziò grazie alla collaborazione con la TWR nel 1994 utilizzando la variante station-wagon che si comportò discretamente bene. Dal 1995 si passò ad impiegare la versione berlina con buoni risultati fino al raggiungimento titolo BTCC appunto nel 1998. L'auto è dotata del 5 cilindri di 2.000 CC portato ad oltre 290 CV e cambio sequenziale a 6 marce. Come potete vedere ampio uso di fibra di carbonio nell'abitacolo e sistema pneumatico di sollevamento.

The 850 was replaced with the smaller S40 for the 1997 season, and it was raced for 3 seasons before Volvo cancelled their BTCC programme in the end of the 99 season. So the 850 was only used in 1994-95 and 96, this one being a 1996 model. In 1994 they used the estate, and in 1995, they changed to the sedan version due to new rules about wings and spoilers being introduced.

@@KarlHamilton Yes, but how is that possible? Volvo 850 2.4 N/A had 140HP stock. How do you double the power without slapping on a turbo?

@@kristupasantanavicius9093 The 850 came in 2.0 or 2.3 or 2.5, there was never a 2.4. They changed the angle the head sat on the block, fitted individual throttle bodies plus lots more. Loads of info on Google mate :)

aahh il carro armato, l'indistruttibile volvo :)))))) che rombo arrabbiato !! il sistema pneumatico mi fa impazzire :)) lo vorrei anch'io sulla macchina, ma su quella con cui ti diverti, dv cambi spesso gomme e oltre a questo anche gli ammortizzatori regolabili, che comodità :))))) la differenza sarebbe ovviamente che sulla macchina metterei il serbatoio e una pompa visto che non devo risparmiare peso come loro, si sono soldi e soldi ma non mi interessa..

Okay, let me clarify... This car hasn't been driven by Rickard Rydell, it was built as an extra body but never raced in England. It was put together by left-over parts(old smashed car) in 1999.

obviously, front wheel drive is for the week, but 5cyl engines' sound is the second nicest thing to hear in the entire universe. and the boxiness of the 850 is almost orgasmic, though not as good as 700's.
