Volvo 850 Restoration - Timing Belt Troubleshooting & Coolant Flush

We had some problems with the timing belt alignment on our Volvo 850 project car and so we did some troubleshooting to try and find the exact cause of the problem. Was it a faulty installation or did we receive some faulty parts? We also flushed the coolant system as there was still 9 year old coolant trying to keep the engine from overheating.

- Project’s Background Story -
On February 21 ’09 our dad bought this ’96 Volvo 850 2.5L 20V estate. The Volvo has a big emotional value for us and seeing the car sitting still for so many years and watching nature taking over broke our hearts. After nine years, and sitting outside for 7 of those 9 years, we finally got our hands on the 850 and brought it back to its home where we will restore it to its former glory. Once we finish the restoration, we intend to make a road trip and keep in the family for many more years to come.

Well, you've forgotten to tell about the cooling system bolt, hidden behind the engine block, that allows to flush the cooling system including the heat unit...

Marked your comment. We also did not mention to put the heater to max temp so the flush gets everywhere.

@@MusTRitch There is no valve to stop the flow of the coolant into the heater core, so max. temp setting should not make a difference.

Flushing the coolant is so satisfying. The engine bay looks squeaky clean. Awesome job.

As for the pulleys, I know from experience that some aftermarket parts isn't a perfect fit even when you order the correct part number from the Volvo catalouge. Ordering it directly from the dealer or buying from the OEM manufacturer is sometimes the only solution. I had a similar issue when replacing pulleys for the accessory belt on my 960. Also, I'm not sure you should use red coolant in this engine. The original stuff is green/blue-ish.

@Björn So it seems indeed. It's just a shame that some of the "good" aftermarket brands also can't get it to OEM spec. And about the coolant, I don't think the color is relevant on it beeing the right or wrong coolant but rather it's properties. I could be wrong though😅

We could be wrong though so if you have to some more info on why this one might be wrong, please let us know. We can always flush it again and put other coolant in 😊

@@MusTRitch about coolant, i don't know about 850 engines, but 240 B230F is prepared for G11 blue coolant - of course you can use other, but G11 blue is for aluminium blocks

Well, we won't anymore😅 but others seem to have had no trouble with the SFK kit so yeah...

What coolant you used ?

Thanks, It can sound silly but i'm curious if i can add only distilled water to start car after timing set replacement. I'll make flush and i dont want to waste coolant. It's 7-8 degrees here btw.@@MusTRitch

Not silly at all! We also did the flush with distilled water for exactly the same reason😊
