Volvo D24T Adjusting Valves

Volvo PNs:
Tappet tool: 5195
Shim tool: 5196
Shims for diesel volvos (d24, d24t) are almost never listed online but are identical to gasser and diesel vw/audi shims, 31mm diameter. I got mine from FCP euro.

To get the shims out, you can also use a mechanic's magnet tool. Also, when you're checking the valve clearances, it is easier if you use angled feeler gauges. (if you can find a set of them).

I love the sound of Volvo/VW D24 engines. The BMW N51 2.5 in the 3 series,5 series and 7 series sounds similar.

Thanks for the video. I'm reassembling the cylinder head while it's out of the engine. Could I adjust the valves before putting the head back on the engine block?

I'll give it a shot. I don't have the tools for the adjustment yet so I'll put the sprockets on tight enough to turn the cam for measurements. Then I'll remove the cam if I need to change shims. Thanks for the reply!

Nice video! But how do you check the other valves? Do you have to turn the shaft in a different position?

Yes, you turn the motor over and follow firing order, which I can’t recall at the moment but is the same for all sixes I believe. When the cam lobes aren’t touching the shims, you’re at the next cylinder, same any engine.

Best way to do this valve adjustment if you do not have enough shims of certain sizes: measure it all, each of them, make carefully a chart for yourself of what you have and where.. and what you need and where. You probably will be able to switch some of them around and get lucky. of course you remeasure again and do it at least one more time when you finish. If a size is missing, and you dont have it, and cant wait for an order; then you could use another shim from another valve that needs swapped anyway. good to have a chart for yourself and see, IN ADVANCE. intakes are much more important than exhaust valves on these, intakes should not be on the tight side, better to set them closer to the bigger value if you have shims for that. always do this valve adj on a COLD ENGINE and use the cold specs. do the adjustments following the firing order. you can do it in a hurry but why would you? prob need a full afternoon to play around. good luck, be careful. roll the engine over by hand, you could do that after each valve adjusted btw. like why not. lol. exercise.

I Kutia P I measured them all in advance so I knew what I needed to order. Much easier to do accurately letting the car sit overnight to measure everything at the same temperature.

Hi Adam I own a mk1 VW LT with the same engine (d24t) & I desperately need a complete comprehensive service manual to aid my task of removing, servicing & reinstalling of the head. You can dowload the book via Pdf files on google, very easy, just search for " volvo d24 pdf" and the one in the top, there it tells you how to do everything but for non turbo engines, but you do it same way as turbo engines.

That will be hard to find. Most dealerships and independent shops probably haven’t used these in decades. My suggestion would be to call as many dealerships and shops as you can

They are the same as vw shims for the diesel 4 or 5 cylinder, I think that’s how I found them.
