I bet there's a lot of heat transfer from exhaust to air intake: i think its a design flaw.

Yes. Very common before,it was cheaper to produce and the efficicency was not a priority.

Can you still get bits for an engine as old as this from VW or Volvo or do they have to be aftermarket?

+michael jagger It's really difficult to have certain parts. You can find usual maintenance parts quite easily, but there are others wich are no longer produced. It's a too rare car and engine to keep going on the road without being in trouble if you want to repair and react quick.

michaelovitch Like pistons valves etc?

+michael jagger No,those parts are quite easy to find, because used on the golf 2 at least ,and maybe the mk3 like you said. I was quoted for 60 euros a piston kit if i remember correctly. I've asked a Russian guy on Yt who did a rebuild, and it was way cheaper, like 40 or less a piston/rings kit. The difficult things to find are for the car itself, like lights, blinkers, plastic interior parts and stuff like that. You can find aftermarket on swedish sites,or in UK. I have few websites as favorites in my browser,in case : ) It's still a pain in the ass to get parts,if you find it...
