Capacity on that drive is 2.5 Qts. 1 note of caution - Do not overfill. If you do, it causes pressure in the lower unit to build up and after running the boat at speed. When you come off plane you may not be able to shift back into neutral right away. Have to idle for about 2 mins to let the pressure come down then you can shift. I know this from experience. Chased that issue for years, until i realized why. And when i say "do not overfill", what i mean is you only want the level on the dipstick to be 1/3 up the stick. If you fill it above half way that is overfilled! Trust me- been thru this.

I have developped rreserve tanks for many odd applicatrions including OMC stringer, Volvo AQ 100, 200, 250 and 290 duo prop, the only thing I can say is that when I used such tanks the advantages were numerous, the first one is the peace of mind, the second is as the drive is vented to the atmosphere, the problem of water intrusion is eliminated, finally, the oil level is easily monitored. I always use 75W-90 Ep synthetic gear oil, grade GL4 ( GL5 can attack brass of the drive cones). Very good video.

I am embarrassed to say how much I just paid my mechanic to do this job. Next year I will review this video and do it myself then take my wife out for a very nice dinner with the money I save. Very good information. Thanks.

That was a nice tip about the wrench and screw driver to get more leverage on a tight screw. I never saw that one before.

Hello to you again Wayne, Omg 😱 make sure you have old rags is very true here. I changed my Alpha One Gen (2) drive oil last spring launch and very rewarding for me. It was black but no water intrusion which was great. I bought (2) new screws with gaskets. I learned so many good things with this drive. So now you finished that project, get ready to clean your drive and spray paint it with anti / Fowler paint for the salt water. You have done wonders with that boat. Keep plugging, great video. Be safe Be well

Thank you!! Do you have an anti fowling paint you recommend?
@kevinmccarey50153 жыл бұрын
@@WayneTheBoatGuy Hello Wayne the fowling paint I recommend is Interlux (Trilux 33) gray color. $ 39.00 bucks West Marine or any boat supply. (1) can is plenty.

Could you lift the outdrive after it’s full so you don’t have gravity working against you?

What happends if you add oil trough the dipstick hole? Does it make a difference
@WayneTheBoatGuy3 жыл бұрын
Well, the problems can be trapping some air so that it doesn't show full correctly & not getting it filled to the exact right level.

They have a nice impact drivers to get that screw out one little hit of the hammer is loose are you sure there's not a screw on the very bottom of the outdrive !
@WayneTheBoatGuy3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I checked the lower section of the outdrive a few times because I couldn't believe there wasn't a low drain on it except behind the props.

Threaded dipsticks vary from one manufacturer to another.Some are to be threaded in to check the oil and some you do not screw them in to take a reading.Probably you are already aware of this.

I did do a few checks to see how it was supposed to work - it’s funny how vague a lot of the boat info is compared to cars!

I run my boat 30-50 hours every season and change the lower unit oil every year. It's always dark for me.
